PATENT LEON Ell. BELL, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO Vertussen 1N sru'r Application filed. August 18, 1931.
This invention relates to metallic d rums, the primary object of the invention being to provide novel means for securing sputs 1n the sput openings of drums, in such a way as 5 to insure against the sputs moving or rotating Within their openings, when excessive pressure is directed to the bungs in removing the bungs.
Another object of the invention is the pro- 3@ vision of a sput having lugs or bosses of a novel construction, so that the metal of the drum Will be securely connected with the sput, when the sheet metal of the drum is pressed into engagement with the lugs or bosses.
still further object ot the invention is the provision of a sput constructed in such aV manner that a sput may be secured by a single pressing operation, While the metal ot 2@ the drum is cold.
`With the foregoing and other objects in View, Which Will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changesv in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made Within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a sectional view through a sput7 constructed in accordance with the invention. illustrating the same as positioned Within the sput opening of a drum.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the sput.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the sput and drum, taken through one of the lugs or bosses of the sput.
Figure t is a sectional view through a sput and drum, illustrating the machine used in pressing the sheet metal of the drum into engagement with the sput.
Figure 5 is a modified Jform ot sput, showing the same as secured within the sput opening ot a drum. A
Figure 6 is a sectional View through the modified form of the invention, the same being taken through one of the enlargements or bosses of the sput.
Serial No. 557,930.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates a metallic drum, constructed of sheet metal, the same being of the usual and well known construetion.
rlhe reference character G designates the sput forming an important feature ot the present invention.y and as shown the sput is provided Wit-h an annular rib T, formed adjacent to its upper end. the outer upper edge of the rib being inclined as at 8.
Formed integral with the rib. and extending therefrom, are spaced enlargements or bosses 9, which present sharp corners, so that the sheet metal of the drum may be pressed into close engagement with the enlargements or bosses 9, the sharp corners forming depressions in the drum, locking the sput to the drum in such a wa)v as to insure against 1'0- tary movement of the sput, should excessive pressure be directed to the sput in an effort to remove the bung therefrom.
The bung is indicated b v the reference character lO and is screwed into the sput in the usual and well known manner, there being provided a gasket between the liange 1Q of the bung and drum, to provide a fluid tight con-l nection between the bung and drum.
To further insure a fluid tight connection at the sput, a substantially thin washer 13 is provided between the annular rib 7 and the inturned flange 1-l of .the drum.
s shown b v Figures 5 and of the drawings the drum is indicated. b v the reference character 15. and in this form of the invention, the sput which ig: indicated h v the reference character 1G, is :formed with au annular rib l?, the undersurface thereol being provided with a plurality Vof enlargements or 90 bosses to be embedded in the sheet metal of the drum. during` the pres-sing ol the drum to secure the sput.
.in the positioning ol the sput. a machine is employed. auch as indicated by Figure -t gf ot' the drawings. tlre machine comprising a stationair)Y l'ormer l-l) which is provided with a hevelled .surface 2() against which the metal ot the drum. indicated at 2].is pressed. Carried by the 'former ll) is a former 22 which'is 100 substantially short, to receive the end of the Wall of the sput opening, the construction of the former beiner such that When properly postioned and the machine is operated, a portion ofthe drum adjacent to the sput opening, Will be inclined as shown at 23, leaving an upstanding portion 24 spaced from the upper edge of the former 19.
The machine also includes a presser' head 25 that embodies a circular' pressing member 26 formed With an inclined surface to engage the drum and force the same into engagement With the former 19.
Springs Q7 are disposed between the pressing` member 26 and presser head. so that when the presser head moves doivnardlv, the pressing member 26 may contact with the drum forcing the drum into engagementwith the former 19. so that further movement of the pressing member will permit the pressing member to engage the upstanding portion Q4 ot the drum, bending it into engagement With the split and gripping the drum around the enlargements 9.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, a
spat may be securely fastened within the sput opening of a drum, to insure against rotary movement. of the sput.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is.
l claim l. The combination with a metallic shipping drum having a sput opening, of a sput fitted in the opening, said sput having an annular rib formed at the upper end thereof? said annular rib having an inclined upper surface, enlargements formed on the inclined upper surface` said enlargements having vertical sidc surfaces and horizontal upper surfaces, the side and upper surfaces of the enlargements defining sharp corners at their meeting edges. the drum adapted to be pressed around the enlargements and the sharp corners biting into the drum locking the split Within the opening.
Q. The combination with the metallic .shipping drum having a sput opening, of a spat fitted in the opening, an annular rib formed at the upper end of the sput, enlargements on the rib, said enlargements having .sharp edges and adapted to cut into the drum pressed around the annular rib and enlargements. said annular rib presenting a. horizontal lower surface over which the metal of the drum is pressed, and the sput being of a length to extend an appreciable distance below the. annular rib, and against which the metal of the drum engages.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as in v own, I have hereto affixed mv signature.
