1 coming from the other former must be wrapped 90 about a comparatively small roll and carried across to the folder, where they must be wrapped 90 in the opposite direction about another small roll to lead them vertically into the folder. In passing about these rolls the folds in the sheets wrinkle and crumple, straining the sheets and making register diiiicult. When running a newspaper of the so-called tabloid size, the half webs also a are slit medially as they run over the drag roll. In such case although there are no folds in the sheets to wrinkle and crumple, the sheets when making sharp bends about the small guide rolls, tend to slide laterally and to creep upon one another. This tendency is particularly marked in the outside sheets.
An object of the present invention is to overcome the difficulties described above and to provide a construction in which there will '.4 be no sharp bends or turns in the sheets as they leave the formers. To this end, I provide a pair of formers each with its individual drag roll and set atsuch an angle that the sheets will converge and run directly into a common pair of nipping rolls which will leady them into the folder.
It is common practice to stagger the plates on the printing cylinders and compensation is necessary to bring the two half webs into register. My invention has for an object to eect such compensation before the sheets reach the formers rather than after they have left the formers, as is the present practice. To this end, I provide means for slitting each full printed web as it comes from the press and then pass one set of half webs about compensating rolls before leading said set to the drag roll.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for spreading the two sets of half webs apart tilting them so that they may be lecll1 at the proper angles to the two drag ro s.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following description of a preferred embodiment and thereafter the novelty and scope of the invention will be pointed out in the claims.

As best shown in Fig. 3, I provide a pair of drag rolls and l1 mounted in suitable inner and outer bearings 12 and 13 respectively, on the frame 14; of the press. The drag rolls are symmetrically disposed with respect to the press, but are set at a substantial angle to each other. The drag rolls 10 and 11 are interconnected at their adjacent ends by bevel gears 15, while the roll 10 at its outer end carries a miter gear 16 meshing with a miter gear 17 on a drive shaft 18. Leading downward from the drag rolls 10 and 11 are two formers 19 and 2O respectively, and mounted at the lower end of each former are the conventional guiding rollers 21 and nipping rollers 22. The drag rolls and formers are disposed at such an angle that the axial planes X-X and Y-Y will intersect at a central pair of nipping rollers 23. Immediately below the latter are the conventional folding roller Q4; and cutting roller 25.
In order to clear the gears and the inner bearings 12 of the drag rolls, the full width printed sheets as they come from the press must be slit and spread apart and then be led at angles corresponding to those of the two drag rolls. The means for spreading t-he webs is shown in Figs. l and 2. In. Fig. l, I show three full webs 26, 2T and 28 coming from the press. Each web passes through a printing unit such as shown at 27m and 28a; in Fig. 5, and thence it passes over a slitter roll where it is medially slit. Thus the upper web 26 passes over a slitter roll 29 and is medially slit by a blade 30 into two half webs 26a and 26?) respectively. Since the printed Vmatter on one half of the web is staggered with respect to that on the other, the half web 26a is run about a set of compensating rolls so as to bring the two half webs into register before they pass over the drag rolls 10 and 1l respectively. Thus the web 26a passes under a roll 31. about a roll 32 and thence back under a. roll 33. These compensating rolls are all parallel to the slitter roll 29 and are so relatively spaced that after J passing about the roll 33 the half web 26a will be in correct register With the half web 26?) as regards the printing thereon.
The two half-Webs must now be spread apart, and to this end the half web 26a is passed under and over a turning bar 34 and thence under and over a turning bar 35. These bars While horizontally disposed are set at angles of approximately 45 degrees to the medial vertical plane of the press. Similarly, the web 2Gb is passed about a pair of turning bars 36 and 3T respectively disposed at corresponding angles on the`4 opposite side of said medial plane. The half webs having been spread by leading them about the turning bars must now be tilted into parallelism with the drag rolls l0 and ll respectively. Thus from the turning bar 35, the half web 26a is led over a roll 38 and thence under a roll 39 to the drag roll 10. The rolls 38 and 39 are parallel to the drag roll l0, the roll 39 being immediately adjacent said drag roll. Similarly the half web 26?) is passed over a roll 40 and under a roll 4l to the drag roll ll, the rolls 40 and 4l being parallel to the latter drag roll.
The turning bars 34 and 36 are lixed at their adjacent ends to a bracket 42 carried by a cross bar 43 of the frame of the press, while their opposite ends are secured to brackets carried by a second cross bar 44 of the frame. These turning bars are therefore fixed, but the turning bars 35 and 37 are adjustable to take up slack or, in other vfords` to maintain uniformi tension at opposite margins of the half webs. Another object of adjusting t-he bars 35 and 37 will appear hereinafter. The bars 35 and 37 are not truly parallel to the bars 34 and 36 respectively, but are set at a slight angle thereto. The inner end of the bar 35 is carried by a bracket 45 on the bar 43 and the outer end is carried by a bracket 46 secured to the main frame 14 of the press. The bar 35 is secured to said brackets by bolts 47 which pass through transversely elongated slots 48 in the bar so that the position or angular disposition of the bar may be adjusted as required. A similar adjustable mounting is provided for the bar 37.
Like the web 26, the webs 2T and 28 pass over their own individual slitter rolls and are medially slit into half webs 27a, 2711 and 28a and 285 respectively. The half webs 27a and 28a pass about compensating rolls similar to the rolls 3l, 32 and 33, before passing on to their individual turning bars, while the half webs 27?) and 285 run direct to the turning bars Without passing around compensating rolls. From the turning bars the half web 27a is led over and under guide rolls 50 and 5l respectively and the half web 28a is led under and over the guide rolls 52 and 53 respectively. These rolls are parallel to and serve the same purpose as the rolls 38 and 39. The half webs 27a and 28a then oiu the half web 26a and run over the drag roll l() as a unit. Similarly the halt web 275 is led over and under guide rolls 54 and 55 to the drag roll ll and the half web 28?) is led under and over guide rolls 56 and 57 to the same drag roll.
Since the turning bars for the diferent half webs are at different heights with respect to the drag rolls, compensation must bc provided to bring all the half webs of each set into printing register. The guide rollers between the turning bars and the drag rolls are so positioned as to provide such intraset compensation and a finer regulation may be had by adjusting the turning bars 35 and 37 of half webs 26a and 265 and the corresponding turning bars of the other half webs. In order to avoid complication the bearings for the guide rollers 38 to 4() and 50 to 57 inclusive are not shown in the drawings.

To this end slitting blades 58 and 59 are provided as shown in Fig. As explained above, the sets of sheets on passing over the drag rolls l0 and l1, run over the formers 19 and 20 respectively, which are disposed at such angles as to lead the sheets directly into a common pair of nipping rollers 23, whence they run vertically to the folding mechanism.
It will thus be observed that my invention provides for inter-set as Well as intra-set compensation of the sheets before they reach the forn'iers, and after the sheets leave the fornus they run without bend to the nipping ro s.
The particular embodiment shown in the drawings and described above is to be taken as illustrative and not limitative of my invention, and I reserve the right to make such changes in form, construction and arrangements of parts as fall Within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
l. In a Web press, a pair of nipping rolls, and a pair of formers converging toward said rolls whereby Web portions may run Without bending from the formers to said rolls.
2. In a printing press, a pair of formers, and a pair of nipping rolls common to both of said formers, the latter being so relatively disposed that their axial planes will intersect at said nipping rolls.
3. In a printing press, a pair of formers, and a folding mechanism symmetrically spaced from the formers and including a pair of coacting rolls, the formers being so disposed that their axial planes Will intersect at said rolls.
4. In a printing press, a pair of for-mers, a drag roll for each former, a pair of nipping rolls common to both of said formers and disposed at right angles to the drag rolls, the latter being so mutually disposed that each drag roll will be substantially normal to a radius drawn from the center thereof to said nipping rolls.
5. In a Web press, a pair of foi-mers, a folding mechanism symmetrically spaced from the formers and including a pair of coacting rolls, the formers being so disposed that their axial planes Will intersect at said rolls, and a pair of drag rolls adapted to lead web portions to said f'ormers respectively.
6. In a Web press, a pair of formers, a folding mechanism symmetrically spaced from the formers and including a pair of coacting rolls, the formers being so disposed that their axial planes will intersect at sa-id rolls, and means associated With each drag roll for slitting each web portion.
