Renewed December 11, 19729.
The principal object of thisinvention is to reduce'the amount of framin' re uircd in an ordinary folder and especially in any folder that is laterally adjustablel accomplish this by mounting each folder unit to permit the vfolder units toV be moved-bodily in a transverse direction, cari ying with them the formers and associated parts, as nipping rolls,
folding rolls, etc. Thus the adjustment for y indifferent widths ofweb can be provided for without' auxiliary framing. Y
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appearhereinafter. l
Reference is to be had ,to the accompanying drawings in which u Fig. 1 is a partly diagrammatic end View of a-,pair of folders and' formers showing the. frames 1n full and dotted lines located intwo` different positions for the folding of wide and narrow sheets; I
Fig. 2 'is va similar view. showing the part-s more in detail; .f
Fig. 3 is an end View;
F ig. l is a sectional view of a modification; and i A Fig. 5 is an end view of the latter. Newspaper presses are often equipped with two folding units placed directly under each. Vof the two formers, each unit handling two pages of a four page wide web. The position' of the folder unit isv important, as care must be taken that the folding lade maynot touch the web as it comes from the nipping rolls. ln my previous application Serial No. 120,886, filed July 7, described a unit folder which may be moved at will, laterally, toy accomplish the purposes set forth in that case. rlhe former and the f carriage on which it is mounted are shown mounted in the conventional way on stationary frames.V |This requires almost the same amount of framing which is normally required for the conventional design of folder; namely, the frameswhich support the former carriage from the bed-plate. This invention relates to a similar arrangement of folder unit except that no auxiliary framing is required since the former carriage is mount-- ed directly on the folder unit and moves 5 therewith.
i case the webs run down through asindicatcd. s
ing screws 21 pass. rk'Ea-chadjusting sc rew'isA 1926, l have shown and lullige. 1, 2 and 3 l haveshown folding nits comprising-framesv10, folding cylinu ders 11 and cutting vcylinders 12 with ,the y Y other usual featuresof 'foldingunits These in 1- and in fulllinesin 2.3 flng-this" in lligfQ. ..1 f.
'ln accordance with the Vpresent invention,v the folder frames 10, each in a'singleunit'are placed 'cna bed plate 19 `whichmay support severalv ofthem fThetbottomsfof.alllof-'the units are providedwith Vfinished surfaces andf guidew'ays resting onfwayslon the bed plate 19. yThe `bed plate is'` provided with fixed projectionsv V.205 through which ustV threadedv into an'opening-in ayframe 75 .Forthe purpose-of cutting and lfolding a narrow web the frames 10.y are moved inwardly aast-ated. above .withrt'he extensionsv 10a. The former nose is alwaysin the .center ofthe websindependent fof valladjustments. This 80.

The units can L be adjusted exactlyright for webs of intermediate widths. y
The same parts are shown in the form illustrated in Figs. et and y5 and designated in the same way. `Here, however, a former carriage 16 is mounted adjustably4 on the folder frame 10a.. Thus the former fold may be adjusted independently of the folder itself, thereby retaining all the advantages in an adjustable unit folder without having to 10.0,v v'
clear the web, whether 85; 1;'
shift it every time it is desired to alter the former fold.
lVith this invention, I obtain the most adv vantageous arrangement of folders possible,
5 at the same time permitting the most ecenomical'fdesign of the machine, as the unity method of constructing machinery is aca knowledged to be the most modern and practical method today.
lo vAlthough Il have illustrated and described only two forms of the invention, I am aware of the fact that other modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details vherein shown and described, but what I claim is l.v In a folder, the combination with a drag 201.1011 and the former arranged for use with either a narrow or awide web, of a folding machine frame having' an extension support-- ing the former, and means for adjusting the frame of the folding machine with vthe form- -fe1 to register with the center ef va wide or narrow web on said drag roll.
2. in a foldingmechanism, the combination with a pair of formers and the: "forming and nipping rolls, adjustable to provide for "'lfeeding either a wide or a narrow web through each of them, of a pair of folding frames each having an upward extension on which the formers are carried, and means for adjust# Ying said folding frames, with the formers,
33 laterally toward or from each other.
3. The combination .with a folding machine frame for supportinga folder, said frame being laterally adjustable, of a carriage ad- Mjustably mounted on said frame, forming and 40 nipping rolls mounted'on said carriage and adaptedv to be adjusted as a whole thereon for receiving a web, and means whereby said folding frame can be adjusted bodily carrying the carriage therewith.
4. In a folder, the combination with .means for guiding either a narrow or a wider web and a `former arranged to receive the web therefrom, of a folding machine frame supporting the former, and means for adjusting said frame with the former to register with the center ef a wide or narrow web.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
