This invention relates to loom temples provided with a. thread cutting mechanism for cutting, adjacent the selvage, the filling ends ordinarily left projecting from the selvage after the replenishing operation in a filling replenishing loom.
Such temples usually include a temple head carrying suitable rollers for gripping the cloth, and also carrying, immediately adjoining the outer ends of said rollers, the aforementioned cutting mechanism. The cutting mechanism usually consists of a ledger blade carried by the temple head and a cooperating movable cutter blade, mounted in a guideway in the temple head and oper-v ated by the reciprocating lay.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved ledger blade, and a novel mounting therefor in the head of a thread cutting temple.
A further object of my invention is to provide, in loom temples of the aforementioned type, a ledger blade and cutter blade which shall be self aligning.
Further objects of my invention will, in part, be hereinafter more specifically enumerated and will, in part, become obvious as the description proceeds.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred forms of my invention Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a loom temple with my improved cutting mechanism therein;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the temple shown in Fig. 1, with parts of the temple head broken away;
Fig. 4 is an elevation, and Fig. 5 is a. plan View of a modified form of separable cutting tip; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are views similar to Figs. 4 and 5, respectively, of still another form of cutting tip.
The particular temple to which my invention has been applied is, as shown, conventional in form except where modified to accommodate the new cutting mechanism, as hereinafter pointed out.

Thread cutting temples are made in either right or left hand patterns, depending on whether the filling replenishing mechanism in the particular loom is on the right or left side thereof, and, while the temple herein disclosed is for the right side of a loom, the disclosure of a particular hand temple is not to be construed as limiting my invention thereto.
The temple bar 1 is adapted to be spring mounted in a suitable stand mounted by the frame work of a loom, the latter parts being not illustrated as they are well known in the art and, in addition, form no part of the present invention. -The bar 1 carries, rigidly therewith, the usual temple head 2 which includes, in the present instance, a pod 3 and a cap a housing a single roller 5 rotatably supported on a screw 6 passing through the inner end of the cap and threaded into the outer end wall thereof. Heel 7 projects, as is usual, into the path of the reciprocating lay.
The cap and pod, immediately adjacent the outer end of roller 5, are cut out to form a guideway 8 for a rockable and slidable cutter member 9 which cooperates with a ledger blade 10 to trim the filling ends adjacent the selvage.
The ledger blade 10 may be of resilient sheet steel and, as shown, is of U-shape, being inverted and secured to the cap 4 by a screw 11 passing between the legs of the blade at the bend therein. The legs of the ledger blade may be properly aligned with the guideway 8 by merely loosening screw 11 and then pivoting the blade laterally about the screw as an axis, the screw serving the combined function of fulcrum for the ledger blade and securing means for the same. Once the ledger blade is properly aligned the screw 11 may be tightened to securely hold the blade in place. Each leg of the ledger blade is sharpened to provide a cutting edge.
Since the legs of the ledger blade 10 are resilient they bear yieldingly against the movable cutter blade, and no separate means to retain the blades in contact is required.
It will be noted from Fig. 3 that the forward portion of guideway 8 is of approximately the same width as the movable cutter member 9, the guideway serving to confine movements of the body portion of the cutter member to a single plane.
The body portion of the movable cutter member is, as is usual, provided with a depending operating portion or arm 12 adapted to be struck and moved forwardly by the reciprocating lay, the cutter member being returned rearwardly to its normal position by a suitable spring 13.
The body portion of the cutter member 9 is provided with a separate, la erally slidable, cutting tip, three forms of such tips being herein disclosed. As more clearly ap pears from Figs. 2 and3, the body portion of the member 9 is provided, adjacentits rear end, with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined recess communicating at its forward end wit-h an enlarged opening 15, the upper and lower walls of the recess be ng parallel to form bearing surfaces for the cutting tip. The forward end portion of the cutting tip is of the same shape as the recess, and the tip is, as shown in Fig. 3, slightly thinner than the body portion of the cutter member.
The shape of the recess 1%, 15 and the tip serves to confine the tip to movement with the body portion when the latter rocks and slides in its guideway. However, the cutting tip is free to slide, in the recess ll, laterally of the plane of movement of the body portion of the cutter member, being confined in this direction only by the legs of the ledger blade 10. The cutting tip and ledger blade are, therefore, self-aligning.
The cutting tip 16 illustrated in Figs. 1-3 is formed of cast iron and is provided on its opposite sides with sharpened cutting edges.
The cutting tip illustrated in Figs. t and 5 is formed of two sheet steel blades 17, 18 fastened on opposite sides of a steel plate 19 by means of a rivet 20. The rearward edges of the blades are sharpened as at 21 for cooperation with the two legs of the ledger blade.
The cutting tip illustrated in 6 and 7 is formed of a single sheet steel blade 22 riveted to a cast iron backing 23, the former being provided with a cutting edge 24 for cooperation with one leg of the ledger blade and the latter being provided with a guide rib 25 to maintain the legs of the ledger blade distended. The forward ends of all three of these cutting tips are of the same size and shape whereby any one of them may be re moved laterally from the recess 14, 15 and any other one substituted therefor.
It is to be understood that the foregoing disclosure of preferred means for carrying my invention into effect is for purposes of illustration, and not of limitation, the scope of my invention being defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A thread cutting temple for looms, comprising a temple head having a guideway for a movable cutter blade, a resilient U-shaped ledger blade secured to the temple head by a combined fulcrum and securing screw passing between the legs of the ledger blade at the bend therein, and a movable cutter blade mounted in said guideway and cooperating with both legs of the led er blade, said ledger blade being adjustable about said screw transversely of the plane of movement of the said movable cutter blade.
2. A thread cutting temple for looms, com prising a temple head having a. guideway therein for a movable cutter blade, a resilient U-shaped ledger blade relcasably secured to the temple head, and pivotally adjustable laterally of the guideway about the center of curvature of its closed end, and a rockable and slidable cutter blade mounted in said guideway and cooperating with both legs of the said ledger blade.
3. A thread cutting temple for looms, comprising a temple head having a guideway therein for a movable cutter lade, a ledger blade presenting laterally spaced shearing edges, and rockable and slidable cutter member mounted in said guideway; said cutter mem er being comprised of a body portion bearing in the guideway and confined to movement in a single plane, and a separate cutting tip carried by the body portion for cooperation with said shearing edges, said cutting tip being slidable laterally of the said body portion, whereby the cutting tip and ledger blade are self-aligning.
l. A thread cutting temple'for looms, comprising a temple head having a guideway therein for a movable cutter blade, a ledger blade comprised of laterally spaced resilient legs each having ashearing edge, and a movable cutter member mounted in said guideway; said cutter member being comprised of a body portion bearing in the guideway and confined to movement in a single plane, and a separate, laterally slidable cutting tip carried by the said body portion and positioned between and yieldingly engaged by the legs of the ledger blade.
5. A thread cutting temple for looms, comprising a temple head having a guideway therein for a movable cutter blade, a ledger blade comprised of laterally spaced resilient legs at least one of which is provided with a shearing edge, and a movable cutter member mounted in said guideway; said cutter member being comprised of a body portion bearing in the guideway and confined to movement in a single plane, and a separate cutting tip carried by the body portion but slidable laterally of the plane of movement thereof, whereby the said cutting tip and ledger blade are rendered self aligning.
6. As an article of manufacture, a movable cutter blade for thread cutting loom temples; said blade being comprised of a body portion having a depending operating portion at one end thereof and a separate cutting tip received in a recess in the other end thereof, said cutting tip being slidable in said recess laterally of the plane of the body member but otherwise rigid with the body member.
7. As an article of manufacture, a movable cutter blade for thread cutting loom temples; said blade being comprised of a body portion having an operating portion and angularly related positioning stops at one end thereof and a separate cutting tip carried in a recess in the other end thereof, said recess being shaped to form a guideway for sliding movement of the tip laterally of the plane of the body portion and serving also to confine the tip against relative movement in the plane of the body portion.
8. A thread cutting temple for looms, comprising a temple head having a guideway therein for a movable cutter blade, a ledger blade secured to the temple head, a rockable and slidable cutter blade mounted in said guideWa-y, and means for yieldingly urging the cutter blade and ledger blade into operative relation; said cutter blade including a body portion and a separate detachable cutting tip received'in a recess in the body portion, the recess and cutting tip being shaped to confine the tip against relative movement in the plane of the body member but permitting lateral removal of the tip, for purposes of replacement or substitution.
9. A thread cutting temple for looms, comprising a temple head having a guidevvay therein for a movable cutter member, a ledger blade secured in the temple head, a movable cutter blade mounted in said guideWay, and means for yieldingly urging the cutter blade and ledger blade into operative relation; said cutter member being comprised of a body portion bearing in the guideway and confined to movement in a. single plane, and a separate cutting tip carried by the body portion but slidable laterally of the plane of movement thereof, whereby the said cutting tip and ledger blade are rendered self alignin ranmuo E.
