Description

MARK CROSBY, OF WAKEFIELD, MSSAGHSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WARDROBE-BEDSTEADS.
Specifioation forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,303, dated April 10, 18,77 application filed January 22, 1877. i
"from the case inclosing the same; and it consists of a hinged or pivoted metal or other suitable weight, so connected to the case by arms as to allow such weight to have a bearing-support upon blocks or yielding cushions that will receive the force of the momentum of the weight'when suddenly brought to a stop, as in the act of closing up the case, al-
lowing the weight to move downward; also, in automatic side pieces, which are connected to' the bed frame or case by pivoted arms, which allow the automatic side pieces. to move obliquely downward when the bed is in au upright position, thereby serving to cover the edge of the mattress from view; and when the case is turned down ready for occupancy the automatic side pieces recede back or downward obliquely, to allow-free access to the bed, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in a closed position. view of the rear side of the same with top broken. away. Fig. 3 is a transverse central section of the same when turned down.
A represents the base, to which is hinged the side pieces of the case B, which form the sides of the bed-frame when turned down. To these side pieces B are connected the automatic-adjusting side pieces O by means of arms D D', which are pivoted at one end to the pieces C, and at the other end to the side pieces B, as shown is Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be seen that when the case is turned up, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the side pieces O fall obliquely downward and backward, so as to fill the open space left at the rear of the side pieces B. This action serves to cover the edge of the mattress when in this posi- Fig. 2 is a similarv tion; but when the case is turned down, as shown in Fig. 3, the automatic-adjusting side pieces O fall by their own weight, so as to rest within the case or side pieces B. This allows free access to the bed for recumbent or other purposes.
To balance the weight of the bed and case B G P G as it is turned up or down, a heavy weight, E, of cast-iron or other material, is used. This weight E is provided with arms F at each end. These arms F are hinged to the front piece G of the case or pivotednpon the rod H, which passes into holes in the base A, and through holes in the ends of the arms F, in which case the rod H serves a double purpose, which is a pivot or hinge for the bed-.case to turn upon in being raised or lowered, as shown.
stops or elastic cushions S S, with which the weight E comes in contact, so as to rest upon the same before the case and bed arrive at a vertical position. The arms F of the weight E, being hinged to the rod H, allow the further movement of the case and bed, after the movement of the weight E has been arrested by the stops S, thus greatly diminishing the concussion and strain of the case, which would otherwise en'sue.
L is a hinged head-board, and N N are hinged corner-feet, which form an ornament to the case when closed up, as shown in Fig. 1, and supports' for the foot end of the case and bed when turned down, as shown in Fig. 3, forming a French-pattern bedstead, which may be placed in a parlor for use as such, and in daytime, or when desired, turned up, as shown inV Fig. 1, so as to inclose the bed from view.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a parlor-bed, as above described, the automatic-adjusting side pieces G G, having hinged arms D D, in combination with the side pieces B B, all being constructed and arranged to opera-te substantially in the manner described, as and forthe purposes set forth.

Witnesses:
