SAFETY STARTER SWITCH Filed Nov. 17, 1950 wr /.9 INVEDTTIOR j w 1 BY ATTORNEY;
normally in engagement with a contact 13 Patented Dec. 27, 1932 UNITED STATES EDWIN J. roo i oF CLEVELAND, o'nIo PATENT; o aries SAFETY STARTER SVIITCH Application filed. November 17,1980. Serial No. 496,251.
This invention relates to a safety starter switch for internal combustion engines, the
general object of the invention being to provide means for preventing the starter switch from being closed until the ignition circuit is closed and to provide means for automatically rendering the device inactive when the engine starts.
This invention also consists-in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to
be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
with a spring 7 normally holding the top of' the member under the member 3 so as to prevent said member 3 from being pushed by the button 4 into engagement with the member 2. An armature 8 is carried by the member 5 and is adapted to be attracted by a pair of magnets 9 in the casing when the same are energized so that the member 5 will be swung from under the member 3 to permit said member 3 to be lowered into engagement with the member 2. One of the magnets is grounded, as shown at 10, and the other magnet is connected by a conductor 11 with a switch arm 12 in the casing, this arm being in said inlet manifold;
the timer head is moved to retard the spark which is connected by aconductor 14 to the ignition switch so thatwhen the switch is closed, current will pass through the conductor 14,'through,the contact 13 and arm 12 and through the magnets so that the member 5 will be swung from under the member 3 to lpermitthe button 4 to be depressed and the starter motor circuit to be closed. It will be seen that the ignition switch must be closed before, the starter switch can be closed. After Z the. engine starts up, a, vacuum will be produced in a pipe15 which extends into the casing and has its end located adjacent a conical member 16011 the switch member 12 so that move the switch member 12 out ofengagement with the switch member 13 and thus break the circuit to the magnets. Thus the member 5 Will'be returned by the spring 7 under the starterswitch member 3, If the engine should stop for any reason,the suction in pipe 15 will-be broken so that the member 12 would again engage the member 13 and close thecircuit to the'magnets pro- L" vided the ignition switch is still closed so that the starter can be operated to again start the engine.
The pipe 15 isconnected to the intake manifold of an engine so that the member 12 is Fa operated by the vacuum or suction created I also provide meansffor preventing the engine being started until the spark is re- 8 tarded. Such means comprises a switch 17 on the timer "which has its contacts 18 normally spaced apart, butsaid contacts being moved in engagement with each other when through means of a part 19 on the head engaging the plunger20 of the switch. One
of the contacts '18 is connected by a conductor '21 with the ignition switch S and the other contact 18 is connected by a conductor 22 9 with a switch part 23 in the casing 1 and which is in engagement with a switch part 24 on the member 3 when said member is in raised position. Of course, the switch part 2 1 is insulated from the member 3. A circ1iit'25-connectsthe switch part 24 to the the suctionin the pipe 15 will draw the mem- 1' ber 16 againstthe end of the pipe and thus terminal of the contact 13 which is connected by a conductor 14 with the ignition switch. Thus it will be seen when the ignition switch is closed, current will flow through the conductor 14 and through the contact 13 and arm 12 to the magnets, as before described, and the current will also pass through the conductor 25 and the switch parts 23 and 24 to the coil, but as soon as the starter switch is moved, this circuit through the parts 23 and 24 is broken. Thus the engine cannot be started until the spark control is moved to a position to retard the spark, when the switch 17 is closed, so that current can flow to the engine.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with an internal combustion engine, its ignition switch and its starter switch, said starter switch including a movable contact, a spring actuated latch member located in the path of said movable contact for preventing closing of the starter switch, magnetic means for moving said latch member to permit closing movement of the starter switch, a circuit for said magnetic means under the control of the ignition switch, and means for breaking the circuit of the magnetic means when the engine begins to operate.
2. In combination with the ignition switch and starter switch of an internal combustion engine, the starter switch including a movable contact, a casing containing the starter switch, a hinged latch member in the casing, a spring for normally holding said hinged latch member under the movable contact of the starter switch to prevent closing of the starter switch, magnetic means for moving the latch member from under the movable contact, a circuit for the magnetic means closed by the ignition switch and including a pair of switch parts normally engaged, and means for moving one switch part away from the other switch part by the suction created by the operation of the engine.
3. In an internal combustion engine having an ignition switch, having a starter switch with a movable contact, and also having an inlet manifold, a casing containing the starter switch, a pivoted latch member in the casing, a spring for normally holding said latch member under the movable contact to prevent closing of the starter switch, a magnet for moving the latch member from under the movable contact, a circuit for the magnet closed by the ignition switch and including a pair of switch parts normally closed, a pipe connected with the inlet manifold and extending into the casing, and a member on one of the switch parts located adjacent that end of the pipe which extends into the casing whereby the suction from the manifold will act on said last named member through the pipe to separate the switch parts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDWIN J. POOLE.
