ELLIS n. HEWITT, or nnenwoon, rnnnsvnvamanssrenon 'ro 'rfnnwns'riuen'ousn 1 Winniehine, PENNSYLVANIA, a conroim'rroiv or AIR BRAKE COEEAIIY, PENNSYLVANIA nnsnnvozr. ec-NsrancrIon Application area February 13', 1931;. Serial No. 515,438.
This invention relates to multiple fluid pressure chamber constructions, and more particularly adapted for use in connection with a fluid pressure brake system.
In fluid pressure brake systems for railway cars, certain types of car brake controlling devices are employed which require the use of a plurality of chambers or reservoirs. It has heretofore been proposed to provide a cast structure which provides the desired plurality of chambers and reservoirs, but with fluid pressure brake systems, the volumes of the chambers must be varied to suit the operating conditions and the particular brake cylinder volume employed in'connection with the brake controlling-valve device.
This makes it necessary to manufacture and carry in stock a variety of chamber and reservoir castings, so as to provide the desired chamber volumes for each equipment.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved multiple fluid pressure chamber construction in which the chamber volumes may be varied easily and cheaply.
In the accompanying drawing; Fig. 1 is a central sectional view of a multiple chamber and reservoir construction embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 a face view of the filler p ece employed in the construction shown in The construction may comprise a reservoir casting 1 and a filler piece 2, which may also be a casting. The filler piece 2 extends into the chamber 4 of the casting 1 through an opening 21 and is provided with a chamber The filler piece 2 is provided with an annular flange 6 which is clamped by studs 8 between a clamping face of the casting 1 and a clamping face of a brake controlling valve device, a portion of which is indicated by the reference numeral 7.
The filler piece is provided with an annular shoulder 9 which extends into an annular recess formed in the end wall of the casting 1 and engages a packing ring 10, so as to prevent leakage. The member 7 is provided with an annular shoulder 11 which extends into an annular recess of the filling piece2 and engages a packing ring 12.
Additional pressure chambers are provided which are 'formed in structures so designed that the volumes may be readily and cheaply varied. For this purpose, sections of ordinary wrought iron or steel tubing are employed, such as the, sections 13 and 14 having the-opposite'ends threaded. The outer ends of the sections are closed by means of caps 15 and 16. The inner ends are connected by reducer fittings or' couplings 17 and 18 to nipples 19 and 20 and the nipples are screwed into threaded openings provided in the end wall of the filler piece 2.
The nipple 19 opens into a chamber 27 formed in the filler piece 2 and said chamber communicates with a cored passage 22 leading-to the face of the filler piece 2. The nipple 20 opens into a chamber 23 formed in the filler piece 2 and said chamber communicates with a passage 24 leading to the face of the filler piece. v
The chamber 5 opens to a passage 25 leading to the face of the filler piece 2, and annular recesses are provided in thevfiller piece concentric with the passages 22, 24 and 25, and adapted to receive gaskets or packing rings 26, said passages registering with corresponding passages in the member 7. A passage 30 also leads from chamber 4 to the face of the reservoir casting 1.
In order to facilitate the formation of chamber 5 in casting the filler piece 2, a large opening may be provided, so that the core may be easily removed after casting, and then the opening maybe closed off by means of a shouldered plate 28. The plate may be clamped in place through a gasket or packing ring 29, so theleakage is prevented.
To provide different chamber volumes, it is only necessary to vary the lengths of the pipe sections 13 and 14, and consequently, with the same standard reservoir casting 1 and filler piece 2, a multiple chamber construction is provided in which at least two of thechamber volumes may be varied to suit the requirements by merely installing pipe embodiment or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claim.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: a
In a multiple fluid pressure chamber construction, the combination with a reservoir casting having a clamping face and a chamber, of a supporting member having a clamping face, a casting having a flange interposed between and engaging said clamping faces and having a chambered portion extending into the chamber of said reservoir casting;
and a section of pipe secured to said flanged casting within the reservoir chamber and having the chamber within the pipe section connected to a passage formed in said flanged casting. V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, this 10th day of February, 1931.
