Description

Patented Nov. 22, 1932 rum-spams cHARLEsAL IOYER; or CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, o HIo .LIFTING m:
- Application 'fiIe d J anuar y 1a,; 1931. Serial 1 \T o. 509,071.
This invention relates to lifting jacksfor automobiles and other vehicles and more specifically to lifting jacks permanently secured to a convenient point on the vehicle.
It especially comprises an improvement on the structures described in my application Serial No. 348,550 filed March 20, 1929 One of the objects of my invention is to provide a permanent jack for vehicles, the operation of whichwill be attended with a minimum of trouble and its use with a mini:
mum of weight and expense. A further object consists in reducing the size without diminishing the strength of the jack to the end that adequate clearance maybe provided for the vehicle when the jack is closed and not in use.
Many attempts have been made to providesuch lifting jacks as permanent fixtures for automobiles, but their weight, size and expense have prevented their practical use particularly in view of themodern constructions which are very low to the ground.
While in the annexed drawing only the preferred form of my invention is shown, similar. uses and corresponding parts are within the contemplation of my invention. For a detailed view ofthe preferred construction drawing in which: 7 V
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectlon through one of my improved jacks showing A V v .me'mbers3 and 4 are reason of the channel widths selected capable of completely tele-I A scoping. 7 ,To facilitatethe free operation.v of "i the jack in its contracted position; this view being taken on the line 1-1 of Figures 3 a and 4; 0
Figure 2 is a view similar to that of Figure 1 but showing the jack in its partially extended position; V
Figure 3 is a vertical end elevation showing the end of the screw adapted for connection to a wrench by which the jack is actuated and i Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section of the jack in. its partially extended position, this view being taken on the line 44 of Figure 1. 7
. The invention in general comprises two pairs of toggle arms 2 and 2a pivotally joined at a common center by U-shaped end members 3 and 4:. The opposite ends of the reference may be had to the accompanying toggle arms are secured pivotally to the ends of bottom and topmembers 5 and 6. Theend member 4 provides abearing for the driving I end ofrthe screw-[7, while the end member 1 3 is' threaded toengage thelthreaded end the E 5 screW- I 1 Y The toggle aims anagram the bottoni "and top'members" 5and 6 are preferably.
formedof lengthsof channel iron The arms 2 and 2a are i ade o'fdifierent widthjcha flnel r so that one arm may completely "enclose the is other. Likewise, the members 5 and 6 are Q made' of channel having different widths so that lfdes red the upperj and lower members may likewise respectively enclose'and'been- 7,
closed. In this mannerfit will be observed that a housingis provided for the screw 7 I wh1ch 1nthe closed position requires avery I little more v space than the'diameter ofthe screw.
As will. b app r nt from the dresse I 7 arms 2 are, pivotally secured to the top member 6 by therivets 8 and in a similar, manner the arms Qa'are pivotally secured tothe base channel 5 by'similar rivetsthrough the? opposite sides of the channel. 5 The relatiyely opposite ends of the'arms2 and 2d arecharacterized by. theoutwardly curved flares. 2b e and 2c for'purposes presently to be described,
The arms 2'and 2a severally ,consistingof strips ofchannel pivotally secured to the bottom and top members 5 and 6 and to'that end the screw? the ends of the arms adjacent the so that i-tjis never necessary tOi'OPQII the arms completely slnce when the arms are parallel the jack has no'ability to resist a lateral strain T and may cause the vehicle to topple .ofi'the'.
jack. Forthis purpose the jack is additional- "ly provided with'a safeguard that the screw 7 is preferably only partially threadedsoIthat 'the arms neednever' be spread farther than 'shown in Figure 2. j i
V A plate 9 is welded or otherwise secured 7 to the upper surface ofthe channel 6 which ack is completed. v 1 The'jack is actuated by. the insertion of a wrench ,socket' over the hexagonal end 70;
' is perforated to permit the bolts 10 topass through the plate. The nuts 11 are then replaced and the installation of theimproved of the screw. The wrench is also preferably provided with an elongated handle and a uni versal jointto insurea .convenlentjoperation ofthe jack under all conditions. For addi-, tional convenience the socket of the wrench shouldbe the same as that required fortire nuts so that the sain'etool 'may'serve both" purposes.
