Description
iwe/wtofv Nov. 15, 1932. G. P. CRAVEN FOLDABLE HEAD SLAT Filed April e, 1931 @ez/rye j. Cirami@ Patented Nov. 15, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application iled April 6, 1931. Serial No. 528,201.
This invention aims to provide novel port made out of links, each of which is means whereby a head rest for a barbers fashioned from rigid metal. The lower link chair, a surgeons chair, a dentists chair, or of the head rest support 7 is designated by v a chair of any other kind, can be turned thenumeral 8 and is provided at its upper Y '5 down readily, into an out of the way posiend with hinge'knuckles 9. `An intermedi- "55 tion, when not in use, the head rest, neverate link 10 is shown, and has a depending theless, being rigidly supported when it is in lug 11, located betweenthe hinge knuckles 9. operative position. The intermediate link 10 has an'upstandi'ng Itis within the province of the disclosure lug 12 received between hinge knuckles 15 10 to improve generally and to enhance the on the lower end of an upper link 14. A i60 utility of devices of that type to which the hinge pin 16 extends through the lug 12 invention appertains. and the hinge knuckles 15. A hinge pin 17 With the above and other objects in view, extends through the lug 11 andthe hinge which will appear as the description proknuckles 9. f
l@ ceeds, the invention resides in the combina- The construction is such that the head rest tion and arrangement of parts and in the Support 7 can be folded over from the posidetails of construction hereinafter described tion of Figure 3 to the position of Figure and claimed, it being understood that changes '4,' but the head rest Vsupport has no flexibility in the precise embodiment of the invention 1atera1ly,`that is inthe direction of 'the ar- 29 herein disclosed, may be made within the rows A, in Figure 3.' The head rest 18 may 70 scope of what is claimed, without departing 'be of any desired construction and is secured from the spirit of the invention. 'at 19 to the upper end ofthe upper link 14 In the accompanying drawing: of the head rest support 7. The upper link o Figure 1 shows in rear elevation, a portion 14 Vof head rest support 7 is provided on its 5 of a chair whereon the device forming the rear surface with a plurality of seats 20, `ar- T5 subject matter of this application, has been 'rangedin longitudinal line. AOn the inner mounted; surface of the lower link r8, near kto the upper Figure 2 is a vertical section;A end of thesaid link, there is a seat 21. The
30 support as it will appear when the head rest 'the iIiIlleI @11d 0f the latch 6- is in use; Y When it is desired to maintain the head rest Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of the 18 incondition to use, the support 7 is slid head rest support, as it will'appear when hdownwardly in the guide 2 far enough, so M the head rest is not in use. Vthat the hinge at 16-'15-12 is within the "a The device forming the subject matter of guide.` Then, the link 14 will extend up- 55 this application may be used upon chairs of wardly, and will have its vlower end mounted many different kinds, but, in the drawing, in theguide 2, so thatthe' head rest 18 canthere is shown a chair back 1 having an innotswlng backwardly or forwardly, or sideternal, vertical guide 2. The edge of the wise. Avertical adjustment may be effected chair back 1 may carry a metal binding piece A by sliding the head rest support 7 upwardly 90 3, which in cross section, is an angle member, or downwardly, and the support is held in the binding piece having a depending arm any position to which 1t may have been ad- 4 which extends downwardly on the chair justed vertically, by engaging the latch 6 in back. In the upper portion of the binding any one of the seats 20-21. When the piece 3 there is a hole 5 in vertical alignment occasion for the use of the head rest 18 has 95 with the guide 2. A holding device, such as passed, the latch 61s retracted, and the head a spring-pressed latch 6, operates in the arm rest support 7 1s slid upwardly into the pos1' 4 and in the chair back 1, and is adapted to tlon ofFigure 2. The intermedlate link'lO cooperate with the guide 2. is folded backwardly and the upper link 14 ,l
The numeral 7 designates a head rest supis 'folded downwardly, the head rest 18, thus,y 100 Figure 3 is an elevation of the head rest Seats 20 and 21 are adapted to cooperate with i i upper, rear corner ofthe back 1, includes a horizontal flange covering the upper end of the guide 2, and a vertical depending flange overlapped on the rear surface of the back. The hole 5 in the horizontal flange is in alinement with the guide 2. The links 8, 10 and ..14 are slidable through the hole 5 of the horizontal flange, into the guide 2. .'The horizontal flange directs the links 8, 10 and 14 into Vthe guide 2. Both flanges of the binding 3 are interposed between the links and the outside of the back, to prevent the links from lwearing the' upper portion of the back, as the links 'are slid up and down in the guide, and as the support is flexed to hang dependent behind the back.
The device is further characterized by the fact that, as shown in Figure 2, the latch 6 projects rearwardly beyond the j vertical flange of the binding 3, and engages the link 14 which carries the head rest 18, when said Ylink is Vfolded downwardly along the back. lThe latch 6 then spaces the said link 14 and the head rest 18, from wearing contact with the back, as shown in Figure 2, and the link 14 holds the latch 6 engaged with the link 8.
Having thus described the invention, what ,is claimed is:
A chair for the use of barbers, surgeons, dentists, and others of similar calling,.having ,a back which is provided with an'internal,
.substantially-vertical guide spaced from the front and rear surfaces of theback, a binding mounted on the upper, rear corner of the back and includinga horizontal llange covering the upper end of the guide, and a vertical, depending flange overlapped on the rear surface of the back, the horizontal flange having a hole in vertical alinement with the guide, a support comprising a plurality of links pivotally joined together, end to end, and slidable through the hole ofthe horizontal flange, into the guide, the. horizontal flange directing the links into the guide, both flanges being interposed between the links and the outside of the back, to prevent the links from wearing the upperrportion of the back, as the links are slid up and down in the guide, and as the support is flexed to hang dependent behind the back; a head rest on the outer end of the support and carried by one of the links, and a latch guided in the vertical liange and `slidable through a portion of the back, into and out of engagement with divers of the links, thelatch projecting rearwardly
