Description
No'v. 15, 1932. B KOCH ET AL 1,887,888
PAPER CONTAINER Filed Dec. 19, 1929 Patented Nov. l15, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LYDIA. B. KOCH `AND JOSEPH BUCHINA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOBVS, BY DIRECT AND y MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO SAD) LYDIA B. KOCH PAPER CONTAINER Application med December 19, 1929. Serial No. 415,207.
cover or closure with a suitable rim and.
flange provided with an annular bead designed to fit into the top edge groove of the body and be resiliently held in place within the crimped edge groove when the cover is.
pressed down into the full closing position.
Figure 1 is a cross-section provided with our improvement, the container being mostly broken away.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the cover itself.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the outer portion of the container.
Figure 4 is a perspective detail of the upper portion of the body.
Inthe drawing like characters of refer- 30 ence indicate corresponding parts.
In the specification we shall merely refer to the upper portion of the body of the container and the cover but it will, of course, be understood that the bottom edge of the container as well as the bottom may be .likewise so formed as will hereinafter appear.
1 is the body of the container or container wall which is formed at the outer end with a crimped or otherwise formed edge groove 2 as indicated particularly in Fig. 4. The paper of which the body of the container is formed may be of one or more thicknesses or layers. y
It will be understood, however, that the 45 crimped edge groove 2 being formed in the paper wall or body will have a certain degree of resiliency and this is essential as will hereinafter appear.
3 is the top or cover or closure whichns 5 preferably formed with an interlocking r1m to overlap the cylindrical portion 5 -of the 4- on which we make no claim in the present application as it forms subject matter of another application. It is sufficient to say'that the cover proper is formed of the annular portion 5 and the top proper 5.` The portion 5 forms a depending flange and is provided with an annular groove 6 corresponding practically in size to the groovee2 and forming a bead extending inwardly into the an-l nular or cylindrical wall of the cover.
The bead formed by the groove 6 is designed to coact with the groove 2. y
When the cover is being pressed down into the full closing position the edge of the groove 2 beingresilient will retreat inwardly and pass the inwardly extending bead 6 and spring back again when it has arrived` home ami1 locked the cover in position as indicated 1n 1g. l.
'Although the cover is locked in position 1t is only detachably locked but yet securely enough to provide for all ordinary handling and not" only this but resist any tendencyy of the cover opening itself or being forced open.
When, however, it is desired to remove the cover this may be done by exerting an extra pull outwardly upon the rim of the cover.
I-f desired the label of the container may be pasted onto the body of the container so as cover as additional security but this is not absolutely necessary.
Such a form of container and cover therefor is not only simple but very effective ,and applicable to a large class of commodities.
Although we have described our invention in its preferable form it will of course be understood that this may be varied to some extent without departing from the spirit of our invention.
What we claim as our invention is:
A paper container comprising a cylindrical body portion having the upper circumferential end terminating in an annular groove, having a weakened resilient upper edge, and a closure having the circumferential wall thereof cylindrical and provided with an annular projection or rim ada ted when the closure is pressed home to fit into the groove 10o of the body al1 around and be maintained therein by the resiliency of the edge of the oove and yet be capable of being withawn or closed down without aifectm the resiliency of the weakened edge o the groove, the circumferential wall of the closure below the annular Projection being provided with a cylindrica sklrt adapted to engage the body portion below the annular w groove.
