Nov. 8, 1932. A. H. sHlLLMAN ART NEEDLE WORK Filed July l2 to: 3u
Zzdenbf ALBERT H- HlLLMAN jj Patented Nov. 8, v1952 A i UNITI'EDSTATES lPir'l E-NTI'VQFFCQ,
ART NEEDLE wom;
Appliation med July 12,
ited in its application solely to pillow tubing,
or cases but may be employed in all stamped goods having overlying panels wherein one end of one of said panels projects beyond the corresponding end of the other panel and wherein both o-f said .ends'are intended to be embroidered. The invention, however, is particularly applicable to pillow tubing, pillow cases and lthe like wherein the open ends are provided with scalloped edges, one
of which scalloped edges extends beyond the other.
' Heretofore andl prior to this invention stamped Ypillow cases or bolster tubes have Vbeen supplied having scalloped edges adjacent which the design to be embroidered has -been stamped. It is among the objects of this invention to provide such pillow tubings or pillow cases wherein the upper panelV isof less length than the lower panel so that the free edges of the latter projects beyond th atvof the upper panel, thus exposing to view the embroidery work appearing on both panels. In-order to facilitate theapplication "of the stamped designs to edges of such pillow cases, it has been necessary to trim the scalloped edge of the upper panel to.th'ere by expose the surface immediately within the scalloped edge of' the bottom panel', the design to be embroidered being then stamped upon.. the surface so expos-ed. This has proved to be a relatively expensive and time consuming method of preparing this class ofstamped goods because of the laborand care required inpreliminarily trimming the Yedge of one panel in order to facilitate the stamping of the second panel and it is this expense .and time` consuming labor which it is amongthe objects of the present invention to avoid.
More specifically, it is among the objects 1932. serial NO ezaov?.
of the present invention to provide a pillow case or bolster tube the open end of which is not preliminarily c ut to the desired configuration, suchas is ordinarily' done to provide a scalloped edge, but @instead Tis cut to :provide a straight edge, the top panel being provi-ded vwith ak ystamped kdesign wel'l removed from said .straight edge and tliefbottom panel beingvalso provided with a` corre. spending stamped design less removed from said straight edge in consequence of which the design` in the top panelris offset relatively with respectto'that `of the'bottom Apane-l. In addition to `the foregoing, the designs-are stamped'upon oppositesurfaces of the bolster 'tube in such manner as-to entirelyjobviate the necessity of separatingthe top .and 'bot-V tom panels for the purposev of applying the design to that surface of the bottompanel i Y Vwhich is tobe embroidered. In otherwo-'rds,
it is an object-of' the invention to so stamp the necessary'designs 1upon opposite outer surfaces of the pillow case that whereashthe .design in the top panell may'beembroider'ed vupon fthe outer surface thereof, vthe 5 design 4in .the bottom Amay be `as readily embroidered upon the inner surface thereof. T'o this end, the design in `the .bottom paneli's stamped 'suiiciently heavy upon the 7 Aouter f surface thereof for the inkatopenetrate the fabric whereby torender ,the design visible upon the inner surface ofA .the bottom panel, i the latter surface broidered.
' Other kobjects of tages thereof l resulting from ldetails of construction and economies jin manufacturewill Ybe 'apparent more fullyihereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the beingthat which is to be `emcomb'ination, construction, arrangement and i relative location of parts, all as is described in the followingspecication, as shown inl the accompanying' drawing, and f as finally pointed out inthe appendedclaims;v In the 4said accompanying drawing l.l Y i f Figure 1 is a plan view of the top surfacel of apillow or bolster tubing the opposite ends of which embody the features of the present invention; f I y Figure 2 is a plan view of thetopsurface the A,invention andA advan` t of a pillow caseonly .one end of which emface of a'pillow case or tubing showing the open end-thereof constructed in accordance with the present invention; v
Figure 4 is a view showing the uppersurface of the stamped portion of the .bottomV panel of the pillow case or tubing, the upper panel being shown partially cut away to expose to view the stamped design in said bottom panel; and
Figure 5 is a View showing the pillow case finished as it appears -when the embroidery work is completed thereon. v v
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, reference numeral designates the pillow or bolster tube or case as-constructed in accordance vwith the principles of this invention, it being understood, of course, that such pillow case isprovided with` a top panel 11 and a bottom panel 12, the longitudinally extendingside edges of said panels 11 and 12 being suitably secured 'together to provide a tube or casing within which the pillow may be slipped. If desired, the pillow case may be woven to provide a circumferentially continuous tube in such manner that the panels 11 and 12 are continuations of each other in a transverse or circumferential direction. YItwill be observed thatthe oppositeY ends of the pillow case 10V are cut straight, asat 13, and 14,' no attempt being made by the manufacturer to trim such'edges to provide'a particular edge configuration, such as a scalloped edge. Formed in the upper panel 11 at some distance from the edge 13 thereof is aline of hemstitching 15 of any `suitable configuration. Inlthe instance shown, the lineof hemstitching is of scallopedfcrmation. immediately within the scalloped line of hemstitching 15and following the design thereof is a configured design 16 applied-by an inked stamp, this stamped design l16 serving' as the voutline or guide for subsequent embroidery work. Paralleling the line of hemstitching 15 and arranged immediately to the outside thereof is a stamped line 17 which serves vas a guideline for subsequently cutting the panel 11 to provide ascalloped edge therefor..
Provided in the bottom panel 12 immediately adjacent the straight edge 13 thereof is a line of hemstitchin g 18, it being observed that vwhile this line of hemstitching 18 is longitudinally offset from the lineof hemstitching 15 in the upper panel, the design of theline of hemstitching 18 is such that it complements and forms a continuation of the line of hem,- stitching 15. As in 'the `case of the upper panel, the bottom panel 12 is also provided' with a stamped design or series of designs 19 to complement and match the 'designs 16 in the upper panel. The stamped designs 19 of the bottom panelare applied to the outer surface thereof in such manner that the ink penetrates the fabric. of the panel 12 and is visible upon the inner surface thereof, it being understood, of course, that the embroidery work is to be applied in accordance with the design 19 to the inner surface of the panel 12. Due to the longitudinally oEset arrangement o f thedesigns 16 and 19, it will be understood that inthe finished pillow case both of the embroidered designs will be readily visible and so enhance the appearance of the pillow case.
The penetrating ink employed for the purpose aforesaid is preferably the regular stamping ink used 'for art needlework designs. A perforated pattern of the particular design desired to be applied to the fabric is placed over the fabricand the ink is spread over the pattern with a spreader in such I. manner that the ink is forced through the perforations of the pattern'and into the fabric. By increasing the amount of ink thusap plied to the outer surface of the bottoml panel 12', a greater penetrationof ink through the il fabric will be obtained to thereby assure a distinctly visible design upon the inner surface of the bottom panel 12.
Ars appears in the drawing'the stamped pillow case as supplied to the customer is also provided with directions printed upon the surfaces thereof. The directions appearing in the top panel 11 are respectively designated by the reference numerals20 and 21 rand in thebottom panels bythe reference numerals i 22 and 23. it will be observed that as respects the stamped design in the bottom panel 12 the directions are that this panel be embroidered upon the inner or upper Asur- 'face' thereof. As respects the upper panel 11` the instructions are that the pillow case be cut along the oppositie side creases fromA the free edge 13 thereof to the cutting line 17 and thence along the latterline to provide the desired scallopededge in said upper `panel i' 11'.- l/Vhen the areadesignated'by the reference numeral 24e is thus cut out it will .be seen that the underlying design in the bottompanel 12 will be exposed to thereby facilitate the embroidery work thereon.
While the pillowcase embodying the present invention has been described with reference to only one end thereof, it will be understood, of course, that the procedure isr the same at the opposite end in all thosecases- Vwhere thepillow case is in the form` of a bolster tube the opposite ends of which are both open. In the case of the ordinary pillow case. only one end thereof is open and it is in connection with this open end rthat the invention is concerned@ Y n Y.
From the lforegoing,it will beapparent that there has been provided a pillow case izo or bolster tube of such design andarrangement as to simplify and render less expensive Y manufacturer of the stamped goods to trim sor the edge of the upper panel to the desired configuration, this operation being left to the ultimate consumer or embroiderer. It will be understood, of course, that this invention is primarily concerned jvith the stamped goods and the method of stamping the same and is only secondarily concerned with the embroidering and finishing of such goods. In the finished product, if desired, the scalloped edges of the top and bottom panels 11 and 12 may be finished with a crocheted lace of any suitable design in the manner indicated in Figure 5.
It will be understood, of course, that the invention is susceptible of various changes and Vmodifications from time to time without departing from the real spirit or general principles thereof and it is accordingly intended to claim the same broadly, as well as specifically, as indicated by the appended claims.
