rllhis invention relates tothe art of cribhing; the general object of the invention is to 'devise an improved form of cribbing structure embodying metal stretcher and header `members which may be conveniently formed and connected together for ready assembly or disassembly. i
More specifically, the object here is to devise such a structure in which the stretcher and header members are connected ltogether by means of interengaging tongues or cleats and registering openings to receive the same'.
rlhe stretcher and headermembers `are vformed of ,galvanised or rust-proof metal and in the present case, the stretcher and header members are formed up from sheet fmetal into hollow rectangular form.
@ther objects will appear from the following description and claims when considered together with the accompanying drawing.
Fig. l is a perspective view of the overlapping portions of the stretcher and header members in which there is employed one particular term` of connecting means therebetween; Fig. '2 is a perspective view of the same corresponding portions of the stretcher and header members which are secured together by a. modified form 'of connecting means; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the term illustrated in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view ot a portion of one of the header members illust-rated in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 illustrates diagrammatically the general assembly of the stretcher and header members.
Referring lirst to Fig. l, the two opposite vertical sides of the hollow, sheet metal header members 1 are provided near the ends thereof with the cleats 2' which are welded thereto so that their top and bottom end portions extend beyond the header members. The projecting end portions of the cleats 2 are adapted to be received by the corresponding slots 3 formed in the top and bottom sides of the stretcher members 9. Some of the stretcher members may have their adjacent abutting ends arranged in staggered relation with respect to theoverlapping end portion of the header member, and the slots 3 will be formed in the end or middle portions of the stretcher members 9 accordingly. The open ends ol the hollow stretcher and header members may be reinforced and closed by means of the inserts 4l which may consist of any suitable material such as concrete or metal for the purpose of better snpporting the compressive load and preventing the entrance of the natural elements. l e end portions of the header members may also be reinforced and provided with rectangular caps to enclose such end portions and thc cleats 2 may be welded to the sides of the caps.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 2, the hollow stretcher members 5 which are formed entirely of rust-prooi sheet metal may have their inner side portions formed with the flanges 5a and 5" in which are provided the slots 5c. These slots are adapted to receive the tangsG which are struck up integrally from the header member 7. These tangs, when extended through the slots, are i then turned down so as to secure the same in interlocking engagement. ln this :form of structure, some of the stretcher members 5 may be arranged with their abutting ends in staggered relation with respect to the overlapping end portion of the header member.. In such case. one of the tanga (l will entend through a slotk in one ot the stretcher members while the other tang 6 will extend through a slot-in the abutting end portion in the other stretcher member. ln this case also the end portion of the header member may be provided with a cap e to be placed over the end thereof after the insert has been placed in positionl H so desired, the cap 8 may be provided with the tangs for engagement in the slots ot the stretcher members.
In all of the several forms herein illustrated, the metal members are irst formed completely and are then galvanized.
In either of the forms of structure herein disclosed, there may be employed also the l in my co-epending application Serial No.
477,445, filed Aligust 23rd, 1930.
With the present form of structure, the stretcher and header members may be conveniently formed and will be substantiallyv proof against rust. Also, they may be conveniently connected together at their overlapping portions, either temporarily or perm manentl and such a structure is calculated to have onger life than my forms used heretofore. This cribbin g structure can be manufactured and installed at reasonable cost and it ossesses a high degree of eciency.
hat I claim is:
1. A cribbing structure comprising hollow tubular stretcher and header members, having metallic walls, said members having fiat load-v bearing walls extending in parallelism and verticalside walls in parallel spaced relationship, ton ues struck up from the metal of the flat loadaring walls of the header members, slots in the load bearing walls of the stretcher members, re 'svtering with said tongues, the structure being assembled. with the tongues passing through the slots and bent down upon the stretcher member to retain it in lace.
2. A cribbing structure comprising tu ular stretcher and header members, said members having flat load-bearing walls extendin in parallelism, the structure being assem led with the load bearing walls in superimposed load-bearing relationship, reinforcing means K within the tubular members in the load-bearing position and contacting the load-bearing walls to carry part of the vertical compressive load, and securing tongues attached to one member and extending interiorly of the acljacent member, said securing tongues serving also to retain the reinforcing means in place.
3. A cribbing structure comprising hollow tubular stretcher and. header members having metallic walls, said members having overlapping portions, and at tongues welded to 1 the outside of the vertical walls of the header members and projecting above and below said header members and engaging within registering openings provided in the overlapping portions of the stretcher members.
In witness whereof, I hereby affix my si gnature.
GEORGE W. POWERS.
