My invention relates to beds or cribs for the use of babies and small children, and more particularly for hospital use. One object of my invention is to provide a crib of the type having high sides and ends surrounding or enclosing the mattress support with means whereby one of the side frames may be vertically moved in both directions; providing for convenient access by a nurse in or other attendant to the occupant of such crib when the side is in the lowered position,

and protecting the occupant of the crib when in the raised position.

A further and important object of my 1nvention is to provide means operative entirely independently of such movable side frame whereby the latter may be raised and/or lowered without having the hands or other portion of the body of the nurse or 39 other attendant come in contact with any raising and lowering of the same in the manportion of the side frame which may be handled or touched by the occupant of the crib; thereby avoiding insanitary and unhygienic handling of the movable side frame in the ner common with cribs of the same general type heretofore in use.

These and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter; reference being had to the accompanying draw- M ed ing, in which:

The crib to which my improvements have been applied is of a more or less usual type, comprising head and foot members or frames 1 and 2, preferably of metal; each of said 45 frames or sections having corner posts l and 2, respectively. Such end frames are stayed and connected together by the usual rectangular frame structureserving as a mattress support, and which may have a spring fabric 50 or other support upon which the mattress 1930. may be laid. As usually made and in the present instance the crib is provided with a relatively fixed side frame indicated at 3, and a sliding side frame indicated at 4. The sliding side frame niay comprise upper and lower longitudinal bars or rails 5 and 6, be tween which are placed the vertical rods or bars 7. The usual practice is to provide the movable side frame with tubular end members such as indicated at 7 a adapted to vertical rods 8 carried by the corner posts of the head and foot framesat one side of the structure. As usually constructed when arranged for manual operation, these sliding side'frames have latching means at some convenient point, usually adjacent both ends of the upper rail and of such a character as to be capable of being manipulated simultaneously by the nurse or other attendant so that the side such lowering of the sideframe giving 'convenient access'to the occupant of the crib. lVhen the side frame israised the latches are engaged and serve to hold the side in the raised position. In the present arrangement provide means for supporting the side frame in the upper position which may comprise an arm 10 connected to a'sleeve member 11 rockably mounted upon suitable supporting means which may be in the form of a longitudinal bar 12 carried by cross bars 12* disposed between the corner posts of the end frames and disposed at one side of the crib; such arm 10 cooperating with a supporting latch 13, pivoted to the mattress support at 13 and having a substantially horizontal portion 13 upon which such arm 10 may rest when the side is in the elevated position, as indicated in the crib the nurse or other attendant has merely to press her knee against the extension 13 of the latch, whereupon its connection with the underside of the arm 10 will be displaced and the side will drop by gravity. With a view of avoiding as much as possible the shock occasioned by the dropping of the side, I provide a relatively tightly coiled spring 14 of the desired tension having one end connected to said arm 10 and the opposite end secured to the side of the mattress frame or other relatively fixed portion of the crib opposite the latch.

When it is desired to lower the side, the nurse or other attendant presses her knee against the latch and displacement of the same when it swings upon its pivot releases the arm supporting the side frame in the elevated position and such frame drops until arrested by the bracket extensions 15 carried b the corner posts, upon which may be placedwashers 15' of rubber or other suitable resilient material for the pur ose of lessening the shock of the falling si e which, however is slight owing to the support afforded by the coiled spring connected to the arm 10. This arm is connected to the movable side frame by a link 10"; one end being pivotally connected to the arm 10, while the opposite end is connected to a projecting member 16 extendin diagonally inside the lower rail of the mova 1e side frame.

By reason of the resilient cushions carried by t e vertical rods 8, and the coiled spring 14 interposed between a side bar of the mattress supporting frame and the arm 10 con nected to said movable side frame, such lowering will be substantially without shock or noise; the side frame lowering gradually against the tendency of said coiled spring 14 to retain it in the upper position.

For the purpose of raising the movable side frame I provide a foot lever 20, pivotally hung at 20 from a strut or depending member 21 carried by a bar 22 extending longitudinally of the crib frame between the crossbars 12. The 0 posite end of such lever is connected by a llllk 23 to a projecting member 24 carried by the sleeve member 11, to which the arm 10 is also secured. Upon pushing such foot lever down, the sleeve member will be turned by the connecting parts and the arm 10 to which the coiled 's ring 14 is attached will be directly raised t rough the link connection of such foot lever. When such arm 10 comes in contact with the beveled side of the latch member 13, it will push such latch out of the way on its pivotal support until the arm 10 has been ifted clear of the shelf portion of said latch member, whereupon the latter will swing beneath such arm 10 and the side frame will be held thereby in the elevated position until the latch is again released.

It will be noted that I have provided a construction whereby the side frame may be dropped as desired by displacing the latch 13 by the knee without the necessity of touching the movable side frame by the hands, and that such side frame may be lifted by the operation of the foot lever until it is again retained by the latch, without the necessity of touching such side frame. This insures absolutely hygienic conditions and avoids all danger of the child coming in contact with apart of the side frame that has been touched by the nurse or other attendant.

I claim:

; 1. The combination, in a sliding side crib, of a crib frame including a mattress support having side rails and vertical rods at the ends of said frame, a vertically sliding side frame mounted on said rods, a pivotally mounted latch hung from the side rail of the mattress support adjacent said sliding side frame, an arm arranged below the mattress support at right angles with and connected to said sliding side frame and pivoted on the crib at a point remote from said side frame and serving to hold the latter in the upper position when said arm is supported by the latch; said latch being laterally movable to release said arm whereby the side frame may drop, and a spring linked to said side frame and connected to a stationary part of said crib serving to arrest such lowering movement of said side frame whereby the same may halt gradually; said latch having a forward projection for engagement by the knee whereby such lowering of the side frame may take place without handling the latter.

2. The combination, in a sliding side crib, of a crib frame including a mattress support having side rails and vertical rods at the ends thereof, a vertically sliding side frame mounted on said rods, an arm arranged below the mattress support at right angles with and connected to said sliding side frame and pivoted on the crib at a point remote from said side frame, a ivotally mounted latch hung from the side ar of the mattress support frame adjacent said sliding frame and 1 adapted to hold said arm and the side frame connectedthereto in their upper position; said latch being laterally movable to release said arm whereby the side frame may drop,

and a spring linked to said side frame and connected to a stationary part of said crib serving to arrest such lowering movement of said side frame whereby the same may halt gradually; said latch having a forwardly extending projection for engagement by the 1' knee whereby such lowering of the side frame may take place without handling the latter.

3. The combination, in a sliding side crib, of a crib frame including a mattress support having side rails and vertical rods at the ends thereof, a vertically sliding side frame mounted on said rods, a pivotally mounted latch hung from the side bar of the mattress support adjacent said sliding side frame, an arm adapted to be supported by said latch;

said arm being arranged below the mattress support at right angles with and connected adjacent to the end to said sliding side frame and pivoted adjacent its other end to said crib and serving to hold the side frame in the upper position when said arm is supported by the latch; said latch being laterally movable to release said arm and permit the side frame to drop; said latch having a forward projection for engagement by the knee, a spring linked to said side frame and connected to a portion of said crib to arrest such lowering movement of said side frame whereby the same may halt gradually, and foot operated means operatively connected to said pivotally mounted arm for lifting said side frame; such movements of the sliding side frame taking place without handling the latter.

The combination, in a sliding side crib, of a crib frame including a mattress support having side rails and vertical rods at the ends of said frame, a vertically sliding side frame mounted on said rods, a pivotally mounted latch hung from the side bar of the mattress support adjacent said side frame, an arm arranged below the mattress support at right angles with and connected at one end to said sliding side frame and at its other end to said crib and serving to hold the latter in the upper position when said arm is supported by the latch; said latch being laterally movable to release said arm whereby the side frame may c rop, a forwardly extending projection carried by said latch for engagement by the knee to effect release of the same, and foot 01)- cratcd means connected to said pivotally mounted arm for lifting said sliding side frame.

5. The combination in a sliding side crib,-

of a crib frame including a mattress support having side rails and vertical rods at the end of said frame, a vertically sliding side frame mounted on the rods of said crib frame, a pivotally mounted latch hung from the side rail of the mattress supporting frame adjaent said sliding side frame, an arm arranged below the mattress supporting frame at right angles with and connected at one end to said sliding side frame and at the other end to said crib; said arm being supported by the latch and serving to hold the side frame in the upper position and said latch being laterally movable to release said arm whereby the side frame may halt gradually, a forwardly extending projection for engagement by the knee carried by said latch, and foot operated means operatively connected to said pivotally mounted arm for lifting said sliding side frame.
