The present invention relates to a knock down box particularly intended for shipping 7 purposes and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which is formed of metal and which comprises a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby the same will occupy a minimum of space when disassembled.
IQ Another important object of the invention I is to provide a box of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, reliable in use, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low 5 cost.
All of the foregoing andstill further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparentfrom a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein V Figure 1 is a viewin topiperspective of a 915 box constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same assembled.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the box constituting the present invention comprises the duplicate, 0pposed, vertical walls 1 and the opposed, vertical walls 2. On their vertical edges the walls 1 are provided with T-heads 3 which terminate in spaced relation to the upper and the walls 2. Formed integrally with the up- 'per and lower ends of the walls 2 are a plu- I while the hinge eyes on the lower end of said 'loWer en dsof said walls 1. The walls 1 are further provided, on their upper and lower end portions and on their inner sides with the opposed complementary, angular flanges 4 which are arranged in pairs which terminate, at their ends, in spaced relation to the vertical edges of the walls 1, the pairs of flanges providingchannels the purpose of which will be 'more fully hereinafter set forth.
The walls 2 have the inner side oftheir vertical marginal portions provided with pairs of opposed, complementary, angular flanges 5 extending fromthe upper to the lower ends ofsaid walls 2 and defining channels for slidably receiving the T-heads 3 of the walls 1- for connectingthe verticalwalls of the box together in assembled relation. From a consideration of Figure 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that, when the walls 1 and 2 are assembled,the upper end of one of the walls 2 is disposed slightly above the upper end of the other of the walls 2 and that the lower end of said one wall 2 is disposed above the lower end of said other of rality of hinge eyes, the hinge eyes on the upper end of one of the walls 2 being disposed substantially in the vertical plane of said one wall 2 while the hinge eyes on the lower end of said one wall 2 are disposed slightly outwardly or laterally. Then, the hinge eyes on the upper end of the other of the walls 2 are disposed slightly outwardly or laterally other wall 2 are disposed substantially in the vertical plane of said other wall 2. This, also is illustrated to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawings. From a consideration of Figure 3 it will be seen that one of thehinge pins to be presently described at the top of the order, is provided at the lower end of the box, Thehinge eyes on theupper and lower ends of the walls 2 are designated by thereference numerals 6 and 7, respectively.
The reference numeral 8 designates the top of the box and 9 is the bottom thereof. The top and bottom 8 and 9 are of duplicate construction and the detailed description of one will, therefore, suflice for both. The top 8 is provided, on a pair of its marginal edges, with the T-heads 10 for slidable insertion in the channels defined by the flanges 4 on the upper end portions of the walls 1. The top 8 is mounted in position by engaging the T- heads 10 in said upper channels of the walls 1 over the upper end of the lowermost Wall 2. On one edge the top 8 is provided with the upturned hinge eyes 11 for alignment with the hinge eyes 6 on the upper end of the up- Y permost wall 2. On its oth-eredge which is free of the T-heads 10 the top 8 is provided with the downturned hinge eyes 12 for align- -ment with the outwardly disposed hinge eyes on the upper end of the lower wall 2.
The bottom 9 is reversed with respect to the top 8 and is mounted in position by sliding the same in the opposite direction beneath the lower end of the uppermost wall 2 until the hinge eyes thereon register with the hinge eyes 7 on the lower ends of the walls 2.
Hinge pins or rods 13 are then inserted through the aligned eyes of the vertical walls 2 and the top and bottom 8 and 9, respective- 1y, of the box and said box is thus secured toa knockdown box constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Nhat is claimed is 1. A knockdown box comprising a pair of duplicate, opposed vertical walls, T-heads on the vertical edges of said duplicate vertical Walls terminating in spaced relation to the upper and lower ends thereof, pairs of angular, complementary flanges on the inner sides of the upper and lower end portions of said duplicate walls defining channels, another pair of opposed, vertical walls, pairs of angular, complementary flanges on the inner sides of the vertical marginal portions of the second named walls for slidably receiving the T-heads for detachably connecting the walls together in assembled relation, the upper and lower ends of one of the second named walls being disposed above the horizontal plane of the corresponding ends of the other second named wall, a top, T-heads on certain of the edges of the top slidably engageable in the uppermost of the first named channels, said top being engageable in its respective channels over the upper ends of said other of the second named walls, a bottom, T-heads on certain of the edges of the bottom slidably engageable in the lowermost of the first named channels, said bottom being engageable in its respective channels under the lower end of said one second named wall and means for detachably securing the top and bottom in position.
2. A knockdown boX comprising a pair of duplicate, opposed vertical walls, T-heads on the vertical edges of said duplicate vertical walls terminating in spaced relation to the upper and lower ends thereof, pairs of angular, complementary flanges on the inner sides of the upper and lower end portions of said duplicate walls defining channels, another pair of opposed, vertical walls, pairs of angular, complementary flanges on the inner sides of the vertical marginal portions of the second named walls for slidably receiving the T-heads for detachably connecting the walls together in assembled relation, the upper and lower ends of one of the second named walls being disposed above the horizontal plane of the corresponding ends of the other second named wall, atop, T-heads on certain of the edges of the top slidably engageable in the uppermost of the first named channels,
said top being engageable in its respective channels over the upper ends of said other of the second named Walls, a bottom, T-heads on certain of the edges of the bottom slidably engageable in the lowermost of the first named channels, said bottom being engageable in its respective channels under the lower end of said one second named wall, and means for detachably securing the top and bottom in position, said means comprising aligned eyes on the upper and lower ends of the second named walls and on the adjacent edges of the top and the bottom, and pins extending through the aligned eyes.
