RIFLE SUPPORT Filed Oct. 15, 1931 win/- 111w nan-u INVENTOR RY TBALMEB 3 t 1 TTORNEY Patented Get. 18, 1932 UNITED STAT S;
ZHAR'RY 'r. IBALMER, or COLLINGDALE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR or- ONE-HALF V RICHARD s. HAMRIC, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA PATENT orrii ca RIFLE SUPPORT My invention is a gun support providing improved means for steadying a rifle during the aiming and firing thereof by permitting the rifleman to rest his arm supporting the gun back against his body so as to avoid strain and fatigue, and which comprises a knob or palm rest grasped by the extended hand of the gunner, a bracket engagingthe rifle at a suitable position on the stock, and
connecting means between the bracket and palm rest for varying the spacing and angular relationship of the bracket and palm rest, and consequently of the hand of the rifleman and the rifle.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, the palm rest is shaped to form a curved knob having a threaded connection with a revoluble member to which is pivoted a pair of links having a pivotal connection with the stock-engaging bracket.
Locking means may be provided for securing the revoluble member relatively to the knob, and clamps may be provided to effectually prevent relative movements of the 2 links and members with which they are connected after the same have been adjusted to a desired position. The characteristics of the bracket Will vary with the particular type of rifle used, and several forms of brackets '30 may be substituted for one another. \Vhere' a magazine rifle is used, the bracket preferably has a projecting head shaped to fit into the magazine recess and provided with latching devices adapted for coaction with the magazine retainer in the recess.
WVhere, however, the rifle used contains no magazine recess, or where it is desired to use the magazine, the bracket may be provided with a channeled upper surface for seating the stock and with apertures permitting the insertion of screws into the stock to secure it to the bracket.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will further appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing in illustration thereof.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 shows a rifleman utilizing my invention in aiming a rifle; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a magazine rifle having 59 my invention applied thereto; Fig. 3 is an body.
* Application filed October 15, 1931; Serial No. 568,897
enlarged detached view of my improved support shown from the side opposite that'shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an end view of the-form of device shown in Fig. 3; Fig.5 is a transverse sectional view .on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is an end elevation and Fig.- 7 is a side view of a modified form' of bracket 9 is a side view of a modified form of bracket 33;
having a curved upper surfaceto receive the stock of a rifle. V
As illustrated in the drawing, there is provided in the preferred embodiment of my invention 'a' grip 1 preferably shaped'in the form of a curved knob adapted to be com- 'fortablysupported on the palm and gripped by the fingers of the extended hand of a rifleman when his aiming arm rests against his A stem 2 is fixed inthe knob 1 and has its projecting portion threaded for the engagement of a revoluble member or "internally threaded hub 3 having apertured proje'ctingwings 4. -A' knurled lock-nutfia is threaded on the stem '2 between the knob 1 and the revoluble member-3,' and may be jammed against the latter toprevent rotation thereof. Two pairs of links 5 and 6 are pivotally connected with the respective apertured' wings 4 by threaded pintles 7 and 8 having'thereon knurled nuts 9 and 10. When the nuts are loosened, the links may be rocked upon their pint'les and positioned in desired angular relation to the knob, and when the knurled nuts are drawn up tight the links are securely fixed in their adjusted positions. v :As illustrated in Figs. 1 'to 5 inclusive of the drawing, the apertured ends 11 of the links 5 and 6 remote from the wings 1 have pivotally connected therewith by bolts and nuts Hand 13 the apertured bosses 14 and,15 of a bracket 16. This bracketfhas a curved projecting head 17 adapted to fit into the magazine recess -a in thestock of a rifle A, and the head is provided with pins 18 adapted for engagement by the usual inagazine retainer in the recess "-a. It will be understood that in the use of the deviceabove described, the magazine is detachedfrom the rifle and the head 17 is inserted in the magazine recess, where it is held by-the engagement of the magazine retainer with the pins 18. The knob 1 is then rotated to feed the stem 2 into or out of the hub 3 and the spacing and angular relationship of thebracket 16 to the knob 1 is adjusted-by rocking the links on their pintles. When the parts are so positioned as to provide a desired comfortable rest with the rifle in aiming position, the nuts on the stem 2'and on the pintles of the links are drawn up to clamp the parts in the desired adjusted position,
Figs. 6 and 7 show a bracket 16 having links 5 and 6, and a head 17 so shaped as to fit into a magazine recess of difierent type.
et adjustably connected with said links and having a projecting part suitable for inset,
tion in a magazine recess, said projecting member having means for engaglng'a magagun support comprising a. grip,.links having a channeled upper surface, said bracket containing apertures for the passage" or devices securing a stock thereto.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of October, 1931. apertured lugs for connecting it with the .IHAIRRY T. BALMER.
As illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the bracket I 16 having apertured lugs, for pivotal'connection with the links 5 and 6, is provided with a head 17", extending axially of the rifle barrel and having a concave surface 19 forming a curved rest for the bottom of the gun stock which may be secured to the bracket by screws passed through; the apertures20 inthehead. I I v Having described my invention, I claim: 1. A gun support comprising a grip, a
bracket, and a pair of parallel members each pivotally connected with said grip and bracket and adjustable to varythe spacing and angular relation thereof. I -2.;A gun support comprising .a knob, a bearing revoluble relatively to said knob, a stock-engaging bracket, and fulcruined means connecting said revoluble device and bracket.
3. A gun support comprising a palm rest, a revoluble member having a threaded connection with said :palm rest, means for fixing said member againstrotation, a bracket, and a pivoted link connectingsaid bracket and revoluble member.
4. A, gun support comprising a knob, a
revoluble member, a screw connecting said knob and revoluble member, links pivotally connected with said revoluble member, and a bracket pivotally connected with said links.
5. A gun support comprising a knob, a I
revoluble member, ascrewconnecting said knob and revoluble member, a pair of parallel links pivotally connected with the revoluble member, a bracket pivotally connected with said links and means for connectin said bracket with a stock. V I
6. A gun support comprising a knob having a threaded stem, a member revoluble on said stem, a locking device revolubleon said stem for securing said member against rotation, a bracket adapted for engaging a stock,
bracket.
and links connecting-said revoluble member with saidbracket, saidlinks being adjustable relatively to said revoluble member and 1
