Description

1932- D. B. RAYBURN SHACKLE FOR PRISONERS Filed March 13, 1931 In venior 2.5 Rayburn A Home y Patented Oct. 11, 1932 UNITED ATE DANIEL B. RAVYBURN, or rENnLE'ron, 111 mm SHACKLE ronrnisonn ns' Application filed March 13, 1931. serial l o. 522,346.
This invention relates generally to shackles for prisoners, and particularly to a shackle adapted to encircle the waist of a prisoner and which is provided with handcuffs to imprison in front of him, the hands and arms of the prisoner upon which the device is placed, to prevent the prisoner from having the use of his arms to inflict injury upon other persons or to unlock the waist encircling member.
It is an object of this invention to provide a new and novel shackle of the type alluded to, which is simple and effective, and which is easily carried upon the person of a warden or keeper, and which may be quickly and easily placed upon the person of a prisoner and removed therefrom, and which completely and effectively prevents the person from inflicting injury or escaping through the use of his hands and arms.
These and other objects of the invention, its nature, its compositlon and arrangement and combination of parts will be readily un' derstood by anyone acquainted with the art 25 to which this invention relates upon consulting the following description of the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a general plan view of my improved shackle.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view through the belt portion thereof. 7
Referring in detail to the drawing the numeral 5 generally designates the waist encircling portion, and the numerals 6 and 7 refer generally to hand cuffs of conventional type attached by means of swivels 8 and 9 which are connected to protuberances 10 and 11 formed on an enlarged, thickened portion 12 in the front portion of the waist encircling member 5. Commencing at the front points 13 and 14:, arcuate portions 15 and 16 extend laterally and curve backwardlv and at their rearward extremities 17 and 18 they are provided vertical hinges 19 and 20 which hingedly carry curved link portions 21 and 22. The rearward extremity of the link 22 carriesa vertical hinge 23 of the same general formation as that of the hinges 19 and 20. To the hinge 23 is connected an arcuate toothed mem- 50 her 24: whose teeth 25 are adapted to be locked invention to the particular modification set in a sheath or lock casing 26 formed integral.- ly with and extending from the rearward extremity of the link 21. A key27 is provided foroperating suitable locking mechanism contained in the sheath 26; 1 It will be obvious that the hinges 19 and 20 and 23, together with the longitudinally adjustable relationship of the sheath26 and the member 24 provide for adjusting the size of the waist encircling member 5 to pe'rsons ofdifferent waist measure and the look mechanism operating in connection with the teeth 25, provides for locking the belt to the required size.
I have in mind the provision of the belt. made of chain or the like, to replace theportion's-15 and 16 fromthe points 13 and 14 outwardly and 'rearwardly, as well as the portions 21 and 22. In the case of using chain or the like, the-hinges 19, 20and 23 will, ofcourse, be unnecessary, the toothed member'24 being attached to the rearward end ofone length of chain, and the sheath 26 being-attached to the rearward end of the, other length of chain. The construction of my improved shackleof chain or other -fleX- i ible construction, provides thatthe whole device may be folded and collapsed so asto be of a suitable size for carrying inthe pocket 7 of a warden or keeper, so as to be constantly available at no inconvenience to the person carrying the same. i i
' The swivels 8 and 9 are provided so as to give freemovement and at the same time, definite confining effect upon the hands and arms of a prisoner. i
The sectional View of Figure 2 discloses generally the cross section of the belt 5 in the form illustrated in Figure 1, the belt sections 15, 16, 21-and 22 being formed of suit able hardened spring steel in the'modification I illustrated in Figures 1 and2 and in the case that the shackle is constructed of flexible structure or of chain, a preferable form would be a double link case hardened chain having the in Figure 2. 7
It is. to be definitely understood thatI do not desire to limit the application of this out herein, to illustrate the principles thereof,
o fl general cross section illustrated comprising a metallic waist belt having self lockingjgirthadjusting means in its rearportion, a radially enlarged hand cuff mounting at the center of its front portion, and a pair of spaced hand cuffs swivelly, connected to said mounting and having self locking, girth adjusting means therein, said waist belt being made up of a plurality ofhingedly connected sections. i A Q I 2. A-prisoner restraining device for application about the waist of. the prisoner, comprising, a Waist encircling member, come prising a rigid substantially semi-elliptical front member, an arcuate substantially quarter-elliptical locking member. hinged to one end of the front member, an arcuate link hinged to the other end of the front member, and a locking tongue hinged to the free end of the, link and adapted to adjustably engage said locking member for enabling locking the waist encirclingj'member so as to accommodate the girth of diiferentv prisoners, a pair'of horizontally spaced individual, handculi mountings locatedcentrally of the front member, a swivel connection on each mounting carrying a handc-uff. v
3. -A prisoner restraining device for appli-' cationabout the waist of theprisoner, comprising, a waist encircling member, comprising a rigid substantially semi-elliptical front member, an arcuatesubstantially quarter-elliptical locking member hinged to one end of the frontvmembei', an arcuate link hinged to the other end ofthefront-member, andva locking'tongue hinged tozthe free end" of the link andladapted to adjustably engage said locking member 'for enabling locking the waistvencircling member so. as to accommodate "the girth of different prisoners, .a pair of horizontally spaced individual handcuff mountings locatedcentrally of the front member, a swivel connectiononeach mounting carrying a handcuff, said locking member, said link, and said locking tongue being rigidv 14. A prisoner restraining device for application about the waist of the prisoner, comprising, a waist encircling member, comprising a rigid substantially semi-elliptical front member, an arcuate substantial-1y quarterellipticallocking member hinged to one end of the front member, an arcuate'link hinged to the other end of thefront member, and a locking tongue hinged to the free end of the link and adaptedto adjustably engage said locking member for enabling locking the waist encirclin'g' member so as to accommodate the girth of diiferent prisoners, a pair of horizontally :sp-aced individual handcufi mountings located centrally of the front DANIEL B.
