This invention relatesto conveyer rolls of the anti-friction type, and has for an object to provide an improved roll that is simple in design, composed of Vrelatively few parts, and which is substantial, durable and eiiicient in operation. Another object is to produce an improved conveyer roll which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. A further object is to provide an improved anti-friction7 journal bearing for conveyer rolls with a simple, compact and novel arrangement for supplying lubricant to the bearings. It consists in certain features and elements of construction, in combination, as herein sho-wn and described and' as indicated by the claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary verticalY section through a conveyer roll and its mounting, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the conveyer roll and mounting.
Referring now in detail to the drawing: The conveyer roll, as illustrated, includes a f tubular body, 10, journaled on a shaft, 11,
whose Aends are carried in supporting brackets, 12. Firmly secured in each end of the tubular body is a head, 13, which may be in the nature of a stamping or a casting. Adjacent each end of the tubular body there are provided a plurality of depressed portions,
15, which in eect form an Vinternal abuts. It may be understood that these dedistance from the end of the tubular body so that the heads may be formed with annular flanges, 17, of substantial width, which flanges are dimensioned for a snug fit inside the end of the tubular body and serve to reinforce the same. The heads are lirmly locked in the ends of the tubular body against theV stop shoulders, 16, by spinning the extreme end portions of the tubular body over the outer peripheral edges of the head; as indicated at 18.
Each head, 13, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, is dished in cross section to form a cavity, 19, with an internal transverse stop shoulder, 20, and has its central area further ings, 27 This sleeve,
stop` shoulder, 16, against which the head, 13,.
depressedas indicated at 21 and dimensioned to lit snugly against the transversev stop shoulder, 22,'on the sha-ft,`11. Securely mounted in the cavities', 19, ofthe ,headsare anti-friction bearings arranged to abut against the transverse internal shoulders, y2O,
thus effectively closing the inner cavities "orchambers, 23, which arethus adapted to serve or OAK PARK, ILLINoIs, AssIGNonfro `SAMUEL oLsoN a COMPANY; INC., @gq on CHICAGO, ILLINoIs, A CORPORATION or ILLINOIS Y as lubricant reservoirs for theanti-'friction bearings it being understood 'that thel lubri`. cant` is in the nature of aheavy grease; i
Theseanti-friction bearings, as" shown in the drawing, A race,.including a frame cup, 25:7 uand a pair of grooved annular members,26, inr'which are seated the usual series "of bearingballs,-` indicated 27, and an internal race, A shown as a sleeve or and also grooved as indicated -at 30,-to' form a rio-operative .race-way for the'ballfbear-l 28,;i`sfiXed against are` ial movement on theshaft by abuttingat one end against a transverse stop shoulder,

`and has one leg abutting againstthe ,stop
shoulder, 20, of the head while the outer leg ofthe channel extends inwardly las indicated around the sleeve.,I 28A thus ser-ving to retain the lubricant in the cavity. The central portions, 21, of theheadsj the slioulder,f22,l also tend to sealthe lubricant against escape into the linterior ofthe tubular body,l0. reduced-portions, 29, at; the ends ofthe shaft'l at` 25a, and snugly fits being snugly fitted against are provided with .longitudinal passageways",
33, which communicatewith transverse pas-Hl s'ageways,j34, opening into therinte'rlor'of; the lubricant reservoir or chamber, `23.` The outerends of the shaft are provided withthe usual fittings,
der pressure. j Y Y Since the ani'nilar` bearing-- shown is, not' occur, are taken up by the v35, for connection to a suit., able device .for supplying the lubricantwung-p typsj Off entr-frauen@ des'ignedto tale'en'd" Ico , 22,'of the shaft engaging the inner faces of l the heads 13, and I lock each end of the shaft to its mounting bracket, 12, by means of'a Washer, 36, detachably securedV by a ma` -chine screw, 37, to the outer face of the bracket, with a portion of the Washer element, 36, engagedV in a slotY or groove, 38, formed in the reducedend portion, 29, of the shaft, as may be seen in Figure l ofthe drawing.
lIt Will Vbe .manifest that a conveyerV roll Y embodying the present invention is relatively simple,
ufactured thermore, it will also be vobserved that this construction embodies a new arrangement for lubricating the anti-friction bearings,V
' which will greatly reduce the amount of luc. 2go
bricant necessary for maintenance as a supply in the reservoir, and serve to confine'the lubricant to direct and close association with the parts to be lubricated.
