CORPORATION OF- MASSACHUSETTS POSTING TRAY Original application filed December 14, 1927, SerialNo. 239,882.- Divided and this application filed October 22, 1928. Serial 170.314.02 1.
This invention relates to a posting tray and concerns itself primarily with the struc ture of av drop side for oflsetting the sheets and is a division of my copending applica- @0117, Serial N 0. 289,882, filed December 14,
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the differout views.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a posting tray involving this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse, vertical sectional view illustrating the drop side in its lowered position and showing the sheets 1 top and bottom of the'side as shown in Figin ofiset position.
F igure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal, fragmentary, sectional v1ew taken 1n a vertical plane just inside of the drop side and looking "tical position. When the drop side is in low-n 75 outwardly.
Figure 4 is an enlarged, transverse, sec-- tional view illustrating the drop side in its lowered position.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary, elevational view of the drop side, broken away upon each lateral edge (Figure 3). The low er end of each member 14 has a hook-shaped end 15 which extends through an aperture to show the locking means therefor.
Figure 6 is an enlarged, sectional view' taken upon the line VI-VI of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view' taken upon the line VIIVII of Fig. 3.
The invention is illustrated in connection with a posting tray having corner posts 1, between a pair of which there is a drop side 2 which is hinged at its lower edge to a plate 3 40 extending between the corner posts 1 and secured to an angle member 4 through a filler plate 5. The drop side 2 of the tray carries a pair of latches 6 and 7 (Figure 5). These latches extend through a suitable hollow? space in the drop side and are adapted for engaging apertures in the corner posts 1. The inner ends of these latches 6 and 7 are Y connected to an operating lever 8 which is pivoted to the drop side by means of a pivot 9 and extends through a slot in the wall of "the hollowspace. Itwill benote'd that the V the result that as the latch bolt 6 is retracted,.:.
the 'springwill-be compressed. And when the lever8 is released the spring lOwill project the latch bolt 6 into engagement with the post 1. As th'e'latch bolt 6 is thuswise projected, it'will swing the lever8 and pro-8:5
" ject the latch bolt 7 into engagement with its PQS The aforementioned drop side '2 is provided with a swingable abutment 13 which is hinged at a suitable point intermediate theu ures 2 and 4c. This swingable abutmentl? is adapted to'lie fiat against the interior of the drop side when thedrop side is in vereredposition, the abutment 13 may be swung into vertical position as shown in Figure 2 for limiting the offsetting movements of the sheets.
The drop-side 2 has an'angular member 145 14'there is-secured a resilient leafspring 17 (Figure '3) and the swingable' abutment 13 is provided with a footpiece 18whichha-s one edge infri'ctional engagement with the leaf spring 17'. When' the abutment 13 is swung into vertical position with respect to its side, 5):; as shown in Figures 2 a'nd4, the footpiece 18 will rest against the drop side for-=maintaining theabutment in vertical position. The spring 17 "exercises suflicient pressure on the I footpiece 18 to maintain the swingable abut 10o sides of the posts 1 and support the drop side The swingable abutment 13 in either operative or inoperative position.
In the use of this tray for posting purposes, it may be desirable to ofl'set certain sheets.

' in which POSltlOIl it is supported against outward swinging movement by the aforementioned footpiece 18. ation is completed, the sheets may be returned to the body portion of thetray and the drop side may be swung upwardly for automatically-engaging for locking thesame in a vertical position.
. I am aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through-a wide range without departing from tion, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the principles of this inventhe patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
- I I claim as my invention:

foot piece on said abutment adapted for resting upon said drop side when said abutment is at right-angles to said drop side and i a frictional means between said drop side and foot piece for maintaining said abutment at right-angles to said dropside.
4. In a posting tray having a drop side, an abutment hinged to said drop, a foot piece upon said abutment for engaging said drop side when said abutment is swung at right angles to said drop side and a leaf spring on said drop side adapted for engagement by In testimony whereof I have scribed my name at Chicago, Cook County,
