My invention relates to locks and has for its object to provide a new and efficientdoor lock which requires a very small hole bored in the door to install the lock and whichis 6 small, compact, but efficient.
A further object is to provide a lockfor doors which will be positive in its action, which will lock the door from within so that it can not be unlocked even with the key, to
make a positive burglar proof night lock which can only be opened from within, and whichwill be easily installed and economically manufactured.
A still further object is to provide a lock which may be set so as to allow it to be operated from either side of the door, but may be changed to allow only a person with the correct key to open the look from without and which may also be set to prevent anyone even with the correct key from opening the lock from without. I
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing in which I have shown the best and most preferred manner of building my invention, Figure 1 is an edge view of a portion of a door, showing my lock installed therein. In the drawing I have shown the door as A, through which a small hole B is bored, and a section C is cut from the door to allow the latch to be inserted therein.
On each side of the door I then place door plates 1 and 2, and on the edge of the door I secure a latch plate 3; The door plates 1 and 2 are provided with centrally positioned extensions or bosses 1 and 5, and which bosses are centrally bored at 4a and 5a'to receive the shaft 10 of the lock. The latch plate 3 is bored to'receive the latch and a cylindrical socket 6 is formed on the back side of the plate 3 and cross holes 7 are cut through the sides of the socket through which an operating lug 11 is passed and operated. Within the cylindrical socket 6 I then place the latch 8 with the end protruding through the hole in the plate 3 and with a control spring 9 secured on the inner end to normally hold the latch extended as shown in Figure 2; The main shaft 10 of my lock is then placed through the bosses 4 and 5 and the operating lug 11 is screwed into a hole in one side of the shaft 1O protruding upwardly therefrom through the holes 7 in the socket 6 and through a hole 764 in the latch 8. The shaft 10 is provided with an enlarged central portion 12 which portion 12 is that portion inserted through the hole inthe door and against which portion the door plates 1 and 2 rest when secured to the door by the screws 2a and the securing bolts 2?). The shaft 10 of my lock is bored from one end to provide a hole 13 therein and from the other end to provide a hole 15 leaving a'portion 14 therein in which a central hole is bored but of smaller diameter than the other holes to form a shoulder at the portion 14. A central shaft 16 is then provided with one end 17 of the shaft of smaller diameter than the main body of the shaft and with threads 18 formed 011 the extreme end of the shaft 17. The shaft 16 is placed in the bore 13 of the shaft 10 and is of sufificiently smaller diameter to operate smoothly, longitudinally therewithin. At the junction of the two sized shafts 16 and 17 a shoulder is formed and a spring 19 is placed around the shaft 17 between the shoulder and the portion 14 of the shaft 10, to normally hold the shaft 16 with a section thereof extended beyond the end of the shaft 10, with thethreaded end 18 A of the end 17 of the shaft 16 within the bore 15 of the shaft 10.
The key to operate the lock is formed with the central portion bored and threaded to receive the end of the shaft 17 with the same threads, and to make it diflicult for other keys to fit the lock other forms of threads may be formed on the end 17 and within the end of the key. A transverse diametrical hole 20 is formed through the shaft 16 and a similar hole 21 is formed through the shaft 10 with one portion extended along the shaft 10 and a lever dog 23 pivoted therewithin by a pivot pin 22 being passed through the dog and the shaft 10 through the extended portion of the hole 21. The said lever 23 has a right angled extension 241 formed on the upper side thereof which extension is passed up through the hole 20 in the shaft 16 and with the end in the hole 21 of the shaft 10 above the level of the shaft 16. A slot 28 is cut in the bore 5a of the boss 5 of the plate 2 and the end of the lever dog 23 is adapted to be normally held in the said slot by the pressure of the spring 19 pressing the inner side of the slot or hole 20 against the right angled portion 24 of the lever 23. A locking screw 25 is set in a threaded hole in the inner end of the shaft 10 between the handle or knob and the boss 5 and two spaced apart holes 26 and 27 are formed in the shaft adapted to receive the end of the screw 25 to lock the shaft from longitudinal movement.
When thescrew is screwed down with the end in the hole26 the door is locked from within so that it cannot be opened from outside even with the correct key for the shaft 16 cannot be moved longitudinally. When the shaft 16 is moved inwardly and the screw 25 screwed down into the hole 27 the dog 23 is raised from the slot 28 by the action of the hole 20 on the right angled portion 24 of the dog 23 and the door may be opened from either side.
A knob F is secured on the inner side of the shaft 10 by inserting a screw 29 into a hole 30, the hole 30 being bored into both the shaft and the knob with half of the hole in the shaft and half in the knob and when the screw is inserted in the hole the threads prevent the knob from coming off the shaft. A suitable knob G is also secured on the outer end of the shaft 11 by any suitable meansor may be made integral therewith.
The operation of my device is as follows The lock is inserted in the door and the screws 2a set'into the door through the plate 2 with the plate 2 on the inner side of the door and the bolts 26 secured through the door to hold the two plates 1 and 2 securely to the door. To open the door the person within presses in on the end of the shaft 16 and rotates the knob. The pressing of the shaft 16 inwardly moves shaft 16 until one wall of slot 20 engages the angled portion'24 of the lever dog 23, raising the dog 23 from the slot 28, allowing the shaft 10 to be ro tated. If it is desired to have the lock remain in such a position as to allow anyone to open the door by turning the knob from either side of the door the screw is turned down while the shaft 16 is'pressed inwardly setting the end of the screw into the hole 27, looking the shaft from longitudinal movement and holding the dog 23 from engagement with the slot 28 in the boss 5. If it be desired to lock the door the screw is removed from the hole 27 and the shaft 16, by the pressure of the spring 19 will resume its normal position and the dog 23 will again be allowed to fall into the slot 28. Anyone with the key having the correct thread thereon may then insert the key into the hole 15, engage the end of the thereon. The key is then pulled outwardly thus drawing'the' shaft 16 into the shaft 10, actuatingthe dog 23 and raising it from the slot 28 and the shaft 10 may then'be rotated by turning the knob. If it is desired to lock the door from within so that noone canopen it the screw 25 is inserted into the hole 26 in the shaft 16 while the shaft 16 is in its normal position. Then no one can open thedoor from either side. To open the door the person from within must screw the screw 25 from within the hole 26 and the lock may then be operated in the usual manner described above.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim 1. In a lock the combination of an outer shaft having threediiferent sized holes there- 11.00
through in opencommunication with each other and in axialalignment with a trans verse hole through said shaft; a smaller shaft carried in said outer shaft having a transverse hole therethrough adapted to be brought into alignment with the hole in the outer shaft; a dog pivoted in the outer hole having a right angled-portion extending up into bothholes, said dog to be actuated by the movement of theinner shaft; door plates secured to opposite sides of the door through which said shaft is passed; a slot in the inside plate in .which said dog isnormally positioned; a spring to hold the inner shaft in such a position as to normally hold the dog in position in the slot and the inner shaft projecting from the inner end of the outer shaft; means to engage the endof the inner shaft to draw it longitudinally and raise the dog from the slot to unlock the door; a locking member operating in transverse holes in both shafts; a right angled portion on said dog extending up into the hole in the central shaft; a door plate secured to the door in which the lock is placed having a slot in one side thereof in which slot said dog is normally engaged; a spring to hold the dog engaged in said slot; means to engage the end of said inner shaft from Without the door, to move the shaft longitudinally and actuate said dog; a looking member to be screwed into holes in the inner shaft; and means to actuate a latch bolt from the perimeter of the outer shaft.
