SUPPORTING BRACKET ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS Filed Oct. 30. 1931 INVENTOR gasper' Iasillo W Y kg ATTORNEY p.
WITNESSES Patented Oct. 4, 1932 UNETEED TATES earner caries CASPER IASILLO, 01? PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO MCRRIS MILLER, 01F PORT CHESTER, I\TEW YORK SUPPORTING BRACKET ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS Application :iled October 30, 1931. Serial No. 572,193.
This invention relates generally to the class of supporting devices, and has particular reference to a bracket which is especially designed for detachable association with a ladder to serve as a means for supporting therefrom, a bucket, pail, paint pot or other similar articles of this nature.
While devices of this nature and for a similar purpose have been previously devised, the present invention comprehends a supporting device or bracket which constitutes an improvement thereupon, both as to the emciency derived from the structural differences and the simplicity of its construction, as well as the economy with which it may be produced.
More particularly, the invention resides in a bracket of the indicated character which may be cut and formed from a single sheet of material or cast or otherwise fashioned to provide an integral structure including a bracket arm defining portion having reversely disposed bail receiving and engaging clips and an attaching or base portion so constructed as to embrace either stile or side rail and a rung of a ladder, whereby the device may be reversely arranged on the ladder to dispose the bracket arm in an outwardly projecting relation from either stile or side rail.
TVith the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope of the same.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bracket in its applied relation to a ladder and illustrating a paint pot supported thereby.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the bracket removed from the ladder.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional plan view taken approximately on the line indicated at 22 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side view of the bracket.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the bracket includes a base defining portion which is designated generally by the reference character A, and a bracket arm defining portion which is designated generally by the reference character B, and which portions are preferably formed integral by cutting and bending the device from sheet material, casting or other similar modes of production. The base defining portion A is generally of channel shape and includes spaced parallel flanges 5 and 6 joined by a connecting web or bight portion 7, while the arm defining portion 13 extends laterally outward from the free rear vertical edge. of the flange 5, to present an arm 8, the free outer end 9 of which may be employed as a pry for opening paint cans or other analogous. purposes. Adjacent the outer free end 9 and spaced slightly inward therefrom, the portion B is fashioned to provide a pair of reversely directed bail'receiving and engaging clips 10 and 11' which open respectively upward and downward. The arm 8 may be strengthened by a suitable strengthening rib or head 12 to impart thereto the desired rigid-1 ity. The other flange 6 is formed with a substantially T-shaped slot 13 which opens as at 14c medially through the free rear vertical edge of the flange 6. The T-shaped slot 13 and its opening 14 are of such a width as to accommodate a rung C of a ladder, while'the flanges 5 and 6 are appropriatelyspaced apart toaccommodate the stile or side rail D of'a' ladder. If desired, for the purpose of lightening the weight of the device, the flange 5 may be provided'with a suitable cutout l5, and in order to further strengthen the web or bight portion 7 the same may be offset or depressed as at 16.
In use, the bracket as constructed may be applied to either of the stiles or side rails D with the arm 8 projecting laterally outward from the stile or rail, by reversibly positioning the bracket, as will be clearly understood.
pail or other similar article F may then be engaged with the upwardly opening clip.
From the foregoing, it will thus be seen that an improved bracket of the indicated character has been devised, and while certain details of construction have been disclosed, it is to be understood that variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the claims may be resorted to if desired.
What is claimed isi 1. A device of the character. described comprising a base defining portion of'generally channel shape having spaced flanges 'oined by a connecting web and adapted to em race one of the stiles of a ladder, means carried by one of saidflanges for receiving and engaging the bail of a bucket or other article to be supported by the bracket, the other of said flanges having a substantially T-shaped slot opening medially through the free edge of the flange, said slot and its medial opening being of a size to accommodate the rung of the ladder.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base defining portion of generally channel shape having spaced flanges joined by a connecting web and adapted to embrace one of the stiles of a ladder, a bracket arm defining portion extending laterally from the free edge of one flange and having reversely directed bail receiving and engaging clips at its outer free end, the other of said flanges having a substantially T-shaped slot opening medially through the free edge of the flange, the width of which slot and its medial opening being of a size to accommodate the rung of the ladder.
3. A device of the character described comprising'a base defining portion of generally channel shape having spaced flanges joined by a connecting web and adapted to embrace one of the stiles of a ladder, independent article supporting means carried by one flange and adapted to be selectively used when the device is reversely arranged on a ladder, the other of said flanges being fashioned to provide independent portions to selectively embracingly engage a rung of the ladder when the device is reversely arranged thereon.
