A TTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 27, 1932 UNITE'DSTATES PATENT OFFICE .roNY n. FOSTER, on INnIANAroLIs, INDIANA, AssIG on T0 HERFF-JoNEs 001, or INnIAN roLIs, INDIANA, A coRronATIoN I JEWEL MOUNTING Application filed April 25,
engage the unclersurface of the superimposed emblem and will be firmly held in place.
The principal feature of the invention consists in the provision of a receptacle for the stone having suflicient depth to include a thin leaf spring beneath the stone. The emblem is then placed upon the stone and the edges of the receptacle peened over to hold the emblem in place. The spring thereafter.
maintains the stone in contact with the undersurface of the emblem. Heretofore, without the use of the said spring, it has been necessary to make the thickness of the stone exactly equal to the depth of the receptacle, otherwise the stone is loosely held within the receptacle and an opportunity is provided for an unsightly accumulation of dust and dirt between the stone and emblem. By the use of the spring, this accumulation space is eliminated without the necessity of accurately fitting each stone to its particular receptacle, or vice versa.
Other objects and features of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims: I
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of receptacle'formed as part of a finger ring. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a pre ferred form of spring. 3 is a perspective view of the form of stone to be used with the receptacle of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an emblem to be used with the receptacle of Fig. 1. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are superposed in the order in which the parts are to 1930. Serial No. 4.4.7377.
be inserted in the receptacle of Fig. 1. Fig: 5 is a sectional View of a portion of a finger ring showing the parts in their assembled relation.
In the drawing a shank 10 is shown fitted with a receptacle 11 having a shoulder .12 formed about the sides thereof. The said receptacle is surrounded by a very thin rim 13 which may be peened over to hold the emblem in place. A curved leaf spring member 14 of suitable resilient material is first placed in the receptacle 11 and is followed by a'stone 15 of onyx or other desired material. An emblem 16 having a rim 17 adapted to fit snugly within the rim 13 is next placed within the receptacle. The rim 17 rests upon the shoulder 12. The emblem 16 is formed with openings 18 through which the stone 15 is visible when in place. The emblem 16 is heldfirmly against the shoulder 12 by any suitable means andthe rim 13 is then peened over the rim 17 to hold the assembly in position. When so positioned, the spring 14: holds the stone 15 firmly against the undersurface of the emblem 16.
While this form of mounting is herein illustrated as applied to a finger ring, it may Y be similarly applied to any other form of jewelry.
The invention claimed is: 7
1. In an article of jewelry, a body portion having a receptacle formed therein, a shoulder within said receptacle, a stone within said receptacle, an open-work emblem resting upon said shoulder, a rim formed about said receptacle and adapted to engage said emblem for maintaining the same upon said shoulder, and a spring member within said receptacle adapted to maintain said stone against the undersurface of said emblem.
2. In an article of jewelry, a body portion having a receptacle formed therein, a shoulder within said receptacle, a stone within I said receptacle, a retaining member resting upon said shoulder and engaging said stone,
a rim formed about said receptacle and adapt ed to engage said retaining member for maintaining the same upon said shoulder, and a spring member within said receptacle adapt- 5 ed to maintain said stone in engagement with said retaining member.
3. An article of jewelry comprising a base portion, a hollow holding device, a filler piece,
a stone member and a design member, said 10 holding device carried by said base portion,
the upper portion of said device being thinner than the remainder of said device and adapted to'be rolled over, said filler piece resting onsaid base portion within said hold- 15 ing device, said stone member resting on said filler piece, said design member having beveled edges upon which said holding device 'upper portion is adapted to contact upon being rolled over. or
2 In Witness whereof, I have hereunto afiixed.
