The object of my invention is primarily the provision of a useful, convenient and economical device which may be carried in the pocket, and which may be employedboth in o themaking and in the carrying of cigarettes.

Other objects of. my invention relate to specific improvements in cigarette making devices, which improvements are not restricted in their utility to a device which is a combi- U nation maker and carrier for cigarettes.

- Itis thus an object of my invention to provide a cigarette making machine of the straight line type characterized by improved mechanism for compressingthe tobacco and for tightening thebelt.

These and other objects of my invention which will be set forth hereinafter or will be apparent to one skilled in the art upon reading these specifications, I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description.

Briefly, in the practice of my invention, l

provide a base member of hollow or traylike form, which serves asa base for the cigarette making mechanism and a back for the cigarette case. This member has upturned sides for 'compressing the tobacco inthe ends of the cigarette, and it likewise has guideways for a rolling device. l provide a rolling device which has a member forming a' part of the cover of the cigarette case anda member forming a slide guided upon the base e, aforesaid. These two members are hinged together, which not only enables me more effectively to compress the tobacco in the initial stages of a rolling operation, but also enables me to conserve space. Finally, I proprovide a pocket for carryingv a supply of previously made cigarettes. The entire device is preferably made of sheet metal and :finished as desired; or it may be covered with 45 any suitable finishing material.

At its forward end'it bears turned; over ears 21 and 22 so spaced that they will lie within the sides of the base. Between these ears is journaled a roller 23. The parts are so proportioned" that there isi-a space between this Vroller and the forward edge of bridge portion when the roller member is closed as shown in Fig. 5. The magnitude of this space is preferably of the order of the width of a cigarette. The

belt extends over the roller, but beneath the bridge member andthe roller member. The roller member may, of course, be lifted on its hinge with respect tothe bridgemember. As a matter of convenience, in my device I prefer to add a metallic portion 19a overlying the member 19, so that between these two members there will be a space 24 thick enough to contain a package of Vcigarette papers when the roller member is in its lowermost position. Or I may construct the hinge so that there is a space etween the member 19 and the member 13, depressing the forward end of 19 to the level of the portion 25. By either of these constructions the' roller may be brought down into proper cigarette rolling position within the base member, and also means are provided whereby a projection on the closure member hereinafter to be described may overlie the portion 25, 'providing a neat and attractive closure.

The' cover member has a top portion 27 pro- .'.t vided with turned over sides 28 so spaced as to fit within the sides of the base member. The edges of these side members are turned over toward each other as at 29 and 30; and the endV of my cover member is preferably l rounded as at 30a so that in cooperation with the side members, there is formed a pocket into which finished cigarettes .31 may be slipped. The end of my cover member may be provided with a lipy 32 to overlie and form -a-1. a neat closure with the depressed portion 25 on the roller member.

In use, in the operation of rolling cigarettes, the roller member may be raised into the position shown in Fig. 4, and the belt G5' pushed down so as to form a pocket 112dbeneath the roller. The tobacco 33 may then be placed in this pocket and spread out; and the roller member will then be swung down upon its hinge as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the tobacco is compressed into a compact cylinder in a pocket 12b behind the roller, there being suiiicient clearance between the roller and the bridge member to permit this. The belt l2, excepting for that portion which lies beneath the bridge andl roller members, will now extend fiat alongthe inside of the base. The cigarette paper 34 is now placed ilat upon the belt in front of the roller, usually after moistening the glued edge thereof, and the operation of making the cigarette is completed by grasping the roller member with the fingers and ,pushing the roller member forward to the other end of the base through such stages as are shown in Figs.y 6 and 7. The roller member 19 slides on the base, since it is borne' by the bridge member 13. It may be conveniently grasped by the turned over portions 20. This operation completes the making of the cigarette, which may then be ejected by pulling the roller member back slightly and/ or swinging it upwardly on its hinge.

Since the sides of the. base are interspaced the length of a' cigarette, the cigarettes will be cleanly made without loose tobacco in the ends thereof;.and when the nished cigarettes are placed in the carrier formed by the cover member, they will be slightly further compressed on the ends, vwhereby they are kept in excellent condition forV smoking. The entire device folds into a compact case, in appearance not unlike the ordinary cigarette carrying case. Y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination, in a device for cigarettes or the like, a base of tray form, a rolling mechanism mounted on said base and adapted to form a part of a closure therefor, and a cover member to complete the closure.

2. In combination, in a device for cigarettes or the like, a base of tray form, a rolling mechanism mounted on said base and adaptedl to form a part of a closure therefor, and a cover member to complete the closure, and means on said cover member to hold a supply of completed articles.

3. In a cigarette making and carrying device, a base of tray form, a cigarette rolling device slidably mounted on said base, said device having a portion to form part of a cover for said base, and a retainer for finished cigarettes pivoted on said base Land of a length to complete the closure thereof. l

41. In a cigarette making and carrying device, a base of -tray form having upturned ends and sides, a belt attached to said ends and extending across said tray, guideways on said sides, a cigarette rolling device slidably mounted on said guideways and adapted to form part of a cover for said base, an additional cover member having portions adapted to extend within said base and retain finished cigarettes, said cover being of a length to complete the closure of said base.

5. In a cigarette rolling device, a base of tray form having a back substantially in a single plane and upturned sides, guideways on said sides and a rolling mechanism slidably mounted on said guideways, said mechanism comprising a bridge member and a member bearing a roller, said latter member being movable with respect to said bridge member from a position in which said roller extends within said tray to a position in vwhich said roller is above the side walls of said tray.

In a cigarette rolling device, a base of tray form having a back substantially in a single plane and upturned sides, guideways on said sides and a rolling mechanism slidably mounted on said guideways, said mechanism comprising a bridge member and a member bearing a roller, said latter member being movable with respect to said bridge member from a position in whichy said roller' extends within said tray to a position in which said roller is above the side walls of said tray, said roller member being pivoted to said bridge member, said members being so proportioned that a space is left between said roller and said bridge member of the order of the width of a cigarette.

7. In a cigarette rolling device, a base of tray form having a back substantially in a single plane and upturned sides, guideways on said sides and a rolling mechanism slidably mounted on said guideways, said mechanism comprising a bridge member and av member bearing a roller, said latter member being movable 'with respect to said bridge member from a position in which said roller extends within said tray to a position in which said roller is above the side walls of said tray, said roller member being pivoted to said bridge member, said members being so proportioned that a space is left between said roller and said bridge member of the order of the width of a cigarette, said roller member having a raised portion on the body thereof adapted to form a holder for a package of cigarette papers.

8. In a cigarette rolling device, a base of tray form having a back substantially in a single plane and upturned sides, guideways on said sides and a rolling mechanism slidably mounted on said guideways, saidv mechanism comprising a bridge member and a member bearing a roller, said latter member being movable with respect to said bridge member from a position in which said roller extends within said tray to a position in which said roller is above the side walls of said tray, said roller member being pivoted to said bridge member, said members being so proportioned that a space is left between said roller and said bridge member of the order of the width of a cigarette, said roller member having gripping projections extendingbeyondsaid sides of'said tray.

In a cigarette'rolling and carrying machine, a base member of tray form having a back lying .in substantially a single plane and upturned sides and ends, a belt extending between saidends, guideways on said sides and cigarette rolling means slidably mounted on said guides, said means comprising a roller carrying portion adapted to form part lof a cover for said tray, said portion being depressible until the top thereof does not extend substantially higher than the top edges of said sides, whereby the entire device when in closed position is not substantially thicker than the thickness of the cigarette, and a cigarette carrying device adapted to complete the closure for said tray, and having carrier members depending within said tray.

In a cigarette rolling and carrying device, a base of tray form having a back por'- 1y between said ends, said ends being crimped over the ends of said belt, said sides bearing guideways, a bridge member slidably mounted on said guideways, a roller bearing member hinged to said bridge member and bearing a roller which is depressible into a position substantially Wholly Within said tray-like base, said roller bearing member adapted to form part of a. closure for said base, a eigarette carrying means pivoted on said base at one end thereof and adapted to complete the closure thereof, said member having means extending Wholly Within said base when in closed position to carry a supply of complete cigarettes.v
