This invention relates to safety appliances for ladders and the object of the invention is to prevent the ladders from slipping When in use. The invention comprises tivo interchangeable units which can be quickly mounted on the foot of the ladder, the metal prong unit being intended for ground use, and the rubber unit for use on iioors or the like. i
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the nonslipping ladder device for floors, etc., fitted to the ladder; Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 1 except that the floor device is removed and the ground gripper exposed; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the iioor device; Fig. 4 is a iront elevation of the same; Fig. 5 is a rear elevation ci the same; Fig. 6 is a section taken on lines 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 'l'v is a perspective view of the floor device structure before the rubber or like materialis applied; Fig. 8 is a detail in Jfront elevation `ot the ground gripper, showing the prongs; Fig. 9 is a detail of the side elevation of the ground gripper.
Referring to the drawings:
10 indicates the ladder, to each leg of Which is attached a bracket member 12 by means oi long bolts 11 through apertures 11a in the said bracket member 12, which is flanged, forming sides 13 and 14 each ot which has ears 15 and 16 respectively, near its middle portion, with apertures 17 and 18 respectively through which the pivot bolt 19 extends. The bolt 19 engages in the apertures 2() and 2-1 in the side llang'es 22 and 23 of a ground gripper member 24 which is mounted between the ears 15 and 16 of the bracket member 12 and Within the spacer 25, the bolt being held in position by lock Washer 26 and nut 27. p
rlhe prongs 28, 29 and 30 of the ground gripper are cut on an angle as shown in Fig. 9 to Jform a sharp edge which permits the prongs 28, 29 and 30 to sink slightly into the ground, thus preventing the ladder from slipping, and WhenV set up the upper end of the gripper 24 stops against the back of the plate 12 and holds the gripper in upright po-` sition.
Slightly above the prong 29 is an aperture 32 which is used When the floor device 33 is mounted upon the ground gripper 24. The floor device 33 consists of ailat strip of metal bent over at 34 and 35, towards the middle,
vthe ends being bent to form upstanding ears or lugs 36 and 3'? respectively, the tops of which are bent outward. Each iianged'surface 33. and 39 has a plurality of countersunk holes 40 'which are filled With the melted rubber 41 or like 'ma erial when the met-al strip` is laid in a mold and embedded inthe said material 41.
The base of the floor device has a plurality ot corrugations 42, wnich adhere tothe surfaceof any type of ioor, thus preventing sliidding or sliding. This floor device is attached with the prongs 23, 29 and 30 mounted between the ears 36 and Bland is secured by a bolt 43 projecting through the apertures 44 and 45 in the ears 36 and 3 7 and the'aperture 32 in the ground gripper 24, and held by nut 46.
rllhe iioor device may be applied when the ladder is used on floors, or removed when used on the ground.
lclaim:` A door piece,
for asafety device 'for ladders comi rising a metal plate folded upon itself at each end, the platehaving holes ei.:- tending therethrough and the adjacent ends or" the plate having lugs stru-ck up therefrom for attachment to the device, and a rubber block moulded upon and around the plate and extending through said holes.
In testimony whereof, l
