In so-called webl printin machinery the web is wound on a roll, an the roll is supported and rotates asthe web is fed. therefrom into the printing machinery. Such mechanism is extensively employed for instance in newspaper printing.
These web-rolls are in practice very heavy.
It has beenthe usual practice heretofore to supportv the web-roll on `a solid shaft which extends entirely through the roll and has protruding ends on which the shaft, with the roll thereon, is supported in suitable bearings,
and to remove the supporting shaft endwise out` of an expended roll and to replace the..
same in a fresh web-roll.
-Such removaland replacement has been found to be burdensome and objectionable, because the shaft usually requires two or more men to handle the same, and because the length` of the shaft requires a large amount of space for endwise movements of the shaft outside of the roll andin the direction of length of the roll. It is the object of my invention to avoi D these objections, and to provide novel means in for supporting a web roll, com risin axles at the respective ends of the weg-roll aving portions which extend into the webrol l for only a slight distance of the length of the web-roll, and centering means for centering the axles with Yrelation to the lweb-roll.
1t is the object of my invention, further,
to provide a novel axle for the end or the web-roll comprising a section Varranged to be secured to the web-roll and a section upon which said first-named section rotates; 'urther, to provide means whereby said lastnamed section may he stationarily held;
.ge further, to provide novel means whereby the axle is secured to` the web-roll; and, further,
. to provide means whereby the act of securing saidaxle to the web-roll centers the web-roll' about the axle. e

A rock-shaft 13 is journaled in suitable bearingsl4 on these columns, this rock-shaft having arms 15 fixed thereto.y The rock-shaft has a worm-wheel'l fixed thereto. These supporting arms have bearings the web-roll having been placed in suitable position, as. on a usual truck, for having the` arms 15 received across the respective ends otl the web-roll and for having the bore of the web-roll and the bearings 25 aligned.
The columns 1l have guideways 28extending vertically thereon, bearing-slides 29 having bearings 30 thereon being adjustable along said guideways, as by means of screwrods 31 journaled in bearings 32, 33, in the columns, and having bevelears 34 ixed to their lower ends. These evel-gears are meshed by bevel-gears 35 fixed to a crossshaft 36 journaled in bearings 37 on the co1- umns. A worm-wheel 38 is secured to the cross-shaft.

After the bea-rings 30 have been fully lowered and the expended webroll taken therefrom, the bearing slides 29 are again moved upwardly for having their bearings 30 received about'the axles of the fresh web-roll. After this the arms 15 may be1 1again lowered for receiving another webro It has been the practice heretofore to support the web-roll on a long shaft extending all the way through the web-roll and having protruding ends received journalwise in the bearings in the slides and of the arms of mechanism of this character.
It has been heretofore necessary to move said shafts endwise out of the web-rolls, occupying a space outside the web-roll endwise of the web-roll equal to the length of the webroll and the protruding ends of the shaft, and then to insert the shaft into the fresh webroll. These shafts, owing to the length and weight of the web-rolls which they were obliged to support, have been extremely heavy, and it has usually required two or more to handle such a shaft, their lengths also requiring considerable space for ltheir manipulation.
In my improved device l provide axles for the respective ends of the web-rolls,l` which axles are comparatively short and extend only part-way into the web-rolls. These axles may be independently handled, so that one operator may readily change the axles from an expended web-roll to a fresh web-roll within a short space of time, the exchange also requiring little space. f
The webs of web-rolls are usually wound about a hollow' core or tube, which tube is usually of straw-board or similar material. I have provided an improved tube of this character exemplified at 45 having a reenforcing cap sectlon 46 at each of its ends. The reenforcing sections may beof sheet metal, and comprise an outer band 47 and an inner band 48 connected by an outer bend 49. The bands and bend are preferably annular..
The inner end of the outer band has an inturned flange 50 imbedded in the tube, and the inner end of the inner band has an outturned iange 51 imbedded in the tube. The inner band has an outwardly projecting socket 52 struck up therein, the walls of which are imbedded in the end of the tube. There may be a suitable number of these sockets arranged around the band, although one of them will suffice and only one is shown.
A staff 55 has a sleeve 56 thereabout, the sleeve being preferably held to the staff, as by being clamped thereto. The .staff has a shoulder 57 against which the inner end of the sleeve is clamped. The outer end of the staff is reduced,as at 58, and is threaded, as at 59, a nut 60 being threaded over this threaded portion of the stati' for clamping the sleeve endwise between it and the shoulder 57.
The staff has an annular iange 63. The inner' raceway 64 of a ball bearing 65 is clamped to the staff between said flange and the sleeve. 2
A second sleeve 67 is located about the staff and has a bell 68 in which the outer raceway 69 of the ball bearin 65 is located. This second sleeve is rotata le with relation to the staff and to the first-named sleeve, being rotatable on the ball bearing 65. This sleeve 67 'is provided with a key 70 received in the socket 52 of the tube 45 for locking the tube and consequently the web-roll and the sleeve 67 rotatively together. The sleeve 67 is also provided with a sloping annular face 7l in the form of the frustum of a cone centered about the axis of the sleeve, which centers the end inner corner 72 of the tube relatively to the sleeve, aiding in centering the tube and the web-roll about the axis ofthe staff 55.
The stad 55 is provided with a reduced portion 75 upon which collars 76, 77, are located, the collars having ianges 78, 79, at their respective ends. The collars have endwise movement between them and form a compressible spool. A centering device 8l is received about these collars between the flanges and is normally of a diameter to be readily received in the bore 82 of the tube 45, and is arranged to be spread equally in all radial directions outward into firm contact with the inner wall of said tube, for centering the device in the tube and preferably forming driving connection between said collars, said l cushion-ring` and said tube. outer raceway 94 of which is fitted in said re-i cess, being preferabl pressed'therein. The
rollers of the rollerearingrotate upon the reduced end of the sleeve. The outer end of the collar 77 is provided withan annular reduced end 95 received in said recess. vThis arrangement centers thethird sleeve `91 about the stati, the sleeve having bearing upon the roller-bearing 93, and the' collar 77 being y centered by it about the stall.

This arrangement further centers the sleeves 67, 91, about the stati, respectively on the ball bearing and the roller-bearing@ and centers the collars 76, 77, upon `said sleeves about the stad, these parts, together with the tube and the web-roll centered thereon, rotatin about the stall, which is in Aturn sup orted 1n the bearing of the `rocherarm or t e slide at one end of the web-roll supporting mechanism, for supporting one end of the web-roll, similar but oppositely disposed means beine` at the other end of the Web-roll for supporting said other end, with the axes ofthe parts coincident.
.Anand thrust plate 96 has connection with a screw-rod 97 'extending through the stati, and having threaded connection 98' with said stad, a hand-wheel 99 being fixed to the outer end of the screw-rod for rotating the screwrod. 'lhe means for xing the end-thrust plate to the screw-rod are shown as a. threaded inner end 160 of the screw-rod upon which the end-thrust late is threaded, a jam-nut 101 being threa ed over said threaded end for locking the end-thrust plate in adjusted position to the screw-rod.
An end-thrust bearing 102 islocated be `of the end-thrust plates of the end-thrust bearing 102. The proximate ends of the sleeves 56 'and 67 are preferably provided with-lubricant retaining means shown as anannular groove 110 in the en of the sleeve 67, van annular tongue 111 on the sleeve 56receivedl in said annular groove, there being a lubricant retaining acking 112V in said groove. lf it is desired to attach one of these iniproved axles to the web-roll, the inner end of the same, containing the centering device, is pushed endwise into the bore pf the webroll, the adjusting screw 97 having been 'mampulated for separating the collars 76,177, and permitting recession radially et the outer periphery of the centering ring 81. sup orting portions are provided with 'trustei conical faces 118,v 119, 12(1), for automatically lill' lil@ and readily positioning the web roll and its axles endwise between the bearings at the respective ends of the web roll.
Figs. 7 to 10 representl a modication of the present invention. In this modification the staff 121 is solid and the inner end anchoring means and the outer end adjusting means are external of the staff, instead of being received through the staff as hereinbefore explained, and the inner sleeve 122 is extended outwardly within the outer sleeve 123, wherein it rotates with the web-roll which is secured thereto.
The sleeve 123 comprises sections 124, 125, 126 and it is rotatively fixed to the stati'l by means of a key 127. The sleeve 122 has an outward extension 131, which is received in the hollow 132 of the sleeve 123. Ball bearings 133, 134, are located between the telescoping portions of the sleeves. The outer raceway of the ball bearing 133 is clamped in an inner annular rabbet 135 in the sleeve section 124, the sleeve section 125 having an annular flange 136 centered in said rabbet and clamped against the outer end of said outer raceway.
Screws 137 are received through holes in the sleeve part 125 and are threaded to the sleeve part 124 for clamping said sleeve parts together and clamping said outer raceway in lace.
p The inner raceway of the ball bearing 133 is centered on a reduced end of the telescoping portion 131 of the Sleeve 122. An adjusting nut 138 and al jam nut 139 are threaded over the threaded outer end of said telescoping portion for adjusting the position in axial direction of the Ainner raceway 133 on said telescoping portion and thereby adjusting the ball bearings 133, 134.
. The inner racewa Vof the ball bearing 134 is received in a rab et 140 in the sleeve 1-22 against the annular shoulder 141 at the end of said rabbet. The outer raceway of said ball bearing is received in an annular rabbet 142 in the sleeve 123 against an annular shoulder 143 at the end of said rabbet.
The third sectionl26 of the sleeve comprises an. adjusting nut 144, which has threaded connection 145 with the reduced part 146 of the sleeve section 125, and has threaded connection 147 with the outer end of the staff. This adjustngnut has a handle formation 148 thereon for operating said adjusting nut which forms a clamping adjustment for the clamp parts of the device in the web roll.
The sleeve 123 is provided with supporting portions 151, 152, respectively arranged 4to be received in the bearings 3() and 25. The
bearing 30 is arranged to be received between annular walls 153, 154, which slope toward each other toward the axis of the device, for positioning the bearings 30, and the supporting portion 152 is providedwith annular` walls 155, 156, complemental 'with the bearing 25,
for positioning said axle endwise with relation to said bearings.
The sleeve 123 has a bell 161 in which the outer raceway of the ball bearing 134 is located.
The second sleeve 122 is rotatable with relation to the stafl' and to the sleeve 123. being rotatable in the ball bearings 133, 134. This sleeve 122 is provided with a key 162 received in the socket 52 of the tube 45 for locking the tube and consequently the web roll and the sleeve 122 rotatively together. The sleeve is also provided with a sloping annular face 163 centered about the axis of the sleeve, which centers the inner end corner 72 of the tube vrelatively to the sleeve, aiding in centering the tube and the web roll about the axis of the sleeve.`
A roller bearing 165 is located between the stati' and the sleeve 122. The outer raceway of the roller bear-ing is'located between a shoulder 166 formed by the rabbet 167 in the sleeve and a Washer 168, a spring ring 169 being located in an annular groove in the Wall of the socket of the sleeve 122 for retaining the roller bearing and the washer in place. The washer has a central opening through which the staff extends, the roller cage of the roller bearing 165 being located between this washer and the shoulder 166.
An expanding member 171 is arranged to be spread in various radial directions for engaging the inner surface of the tube of the web-roll in order to center the axle in the web-roll and preferably forming driving connection therewith. This expanding member in the modification comprises a plurality of sectors 172, of which there may be three, arranged to be spread radially; The sectors comprise outer circumferential'faces arranged to press upon the wall of the bore of the tube 45'. A split spring ring'175 is received about the sectors for urging them radially inward. It is shown located in an annular groove 176 in the outer periphery of the sectors.
The outer ends of the segments are provided with outer reduced walls 177 which extend outwardly endwise over the inner reducedend 178 of the sleeve 122. The outer ends of the segments are provided with inward projections 179 received in recesses 180 in the sleeve. These inward projections are shown as flanges and the recesses as an annular groove. The construction positions the segments on the inner end of the sleeve'122 lll and holds the segments inlengthwise directions to the sleeve.
The segments are provided with inner wedge faces 181, with which the wedge faces 182 of a wedge piece 183 cooperate to spread the wedge pieces against the inner wall of the tube. The inner wedge faces of the segments are instanced as of frusto-conical form,
