Description

w. L. CARTER.
AMP-BURNER. No. 187,810. V Patntd Feb. 27, 1877 WITNESSES; I V g v in:
4 N-PETERS, PHOYDJJTHDGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D C PATENT WIRT L. CARTER, OF MONROE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN L'AMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,810, dated February 27, 1877; application tiled Februaryl, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WIRT L. CARTER, of Monroe, Monroe county, Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Burner, of which the following is a specification:
. My invention relates to an improvement in Argand lamp-burners; and consists in means for steadying or equalizing the action of the air-current to prevent flickering of the flame, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved burner.- Fig.2 is a sectional elevation taken on line w m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line y y, and Fig. 4. is atop view of the regulator for the air to the outside of the flame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais the inner air-tube, which is made to increase in size from the top down, to prevent clogging by the dropping from the wick, and provided with two air-inlet openings, B, at the bottom. The latter are in closed or surrounded by the air-inclosing hood 0, forming a chamber, in which the air settles into a quiet state before entering the tube, so that it comes up to the flame steadier, and thus makes it steadier. D represents the perforated annularplate regulator, which I arrange in the lower part of the burner, below the chimney-holder E, and under the hood F, for steadying the air entering to the outside tube G, and passing up to the outside of the flame. This hood also acts as an elongation of the chimney and increases the draft, and it has the effect of cooling the burner.
The hood (J forms a reservoir, which catches the overflow of oil from the lamp, caused by the expansion of the oil when the lamp, being full of cold oil, is lighted. The oil thus caught in the hood is prevented from flowing down the lamp, and onto the table and the hands, as it does in. ordinary lamps, to such an extent as to be a serious objection to the use of lamps, which, by this contrivance, is wholly avoided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The regulating perforated plate D, combined with the hood F and the in et to the outside tube G, substantially as specified.
2. The hood F, extending downward from the bottom of the chimney-holder, to form an extension of the chimney, substantially as specified.
