Description

Patented Sept. 13,` '1932` JOSEPH WILLIAMS, JR., F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA GAS GUN Application filed October 23,1931. SerialL No. 570,696'.
` This invention relates to a gas gun7 and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide, a device of the character stated which may be used as a flexible billy or blackjack and a gas gun combined. With this object in view the t `device includes a barrelmember adapted to receive a cartridge and a handle grip adapted to be applied to the barrel and having c breach plug disposed transversely thereof and provided with a pin opening. A plunger is slidable in the grip and may be moved to a retracted position therein by the use of a thumb slide mounted upon the grip.' A spring is provided for forcing the plunger toward the breech plug so that the firing piu carried by the plunger may have contact with the shell of the cartridge. Flexible tubing is 20 connected with the forward end of the barrel and the cartridge when fired discharges the gas through said tubing. The tubing is sur rounded by a coil spring and the outer end of the said spring is weighted and padded. The parts and features are so arrangedand assembled that when the device is used as a blackjack or billy in striking a blow, the loaded end will rebound suiliciently to preventthe possibility of fracturing receivers bones and the cushion at the loaded end rei i duces the liability of striking a dead blow.
When used as a tear-gas gun, the firing mechanism can be operated with one hand by drawing the thumb slide toward the rear end of thegrip and then permitting the spring to move the plunger in a forward direction in the grip.
In` the "accompanying drawing: Figurel is a plan view of the device. Figure` 2 is a longitudinal sectional View f thereof. Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof cutV on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the combined gas gun and blackjack includes a barrel member 1 adapted to receive a cartridge 2. A handle grip 3 is screwed into engagement with the barrel and a breech plug 4 is disposed transversely across, the
interior of the grip. The plug 4; is provided with a pin opening 5.` A plunger 6 is slidable'in the grip 3 and a spring 7 is transposedbetween the wall of the grip and the plunger and serves to move the plunger toward the breech plug. The plunger is provided at its forward end with a pin 8 adapted' to, pass through the opening 5 and have contact with the center of the shell of the cartridge 2. VA grip 3` is provided at its side Withaslot 9 andan opening 10. A pin 11 is carried by the `plunger and passes through the slot 9. A thumb piece 12 is slidable in guides` 13 mounted upon the grip 3 and the said thumb piece is `provided with a slot 14 which registers with the Slot 9 and receives the outer end ofthe pin 11. The thumb piece 12 is provided with a recess 15 which retains a ball 16, the said ball being adapted to travel ina groove 17 provided at the outer surface of the grip 3 and adapted to enter an indentation 18 provided at the end of said groove. The plunger 6 is providedy with a bore 19 which holds a spring 20 and upon said spring a ball21 rests so` thaty the upperportion of theball may; travel under the slot 9 and may enter theopening when the thumb piece is moved to a retracted position upon the grip.A lVhen the upper4 portion of the ball 21 enters the opening 10, the plunger is held at `a retracted position within the grip and against the tension of the spring 7. lVhen the slide piece 12; is moved forwardly the ball 1.6` is moved out ofthe indentation 18 until it comes into contact with the releasing ball 21 forcing theball 21 down against the spring then the tension of the spring 7 comes into play whereby theplunger is swiftly moved in aforward direction in the grip so that the pin. 8 passes through the opening 5 of the breech plug and 'comes in contact with the shell of the cartridge 2` and explodes the cartridge. The gases from the cartridge pass` through the barrel' 1 and discharge through a flexible hose hereinafter described.
The flexible hoseconsists of a metallic strip 2O which is spirally wound and the convolutions of the winding having interlocking edges. The flexible tubing is connected with the outer end of the barrel l. A coil spring 21 surrounds the tubing 20 and is also connected with the barrel 1. A casing 22 is disposed over the coil spring 21 and is connected at its outer end with a nipple 28 Which is attached to the outer end of the tubing 20.
A Weight 24 surrounds the outer portion of the spring 21 and Vis enclosed Within the case 22. The said Weightmay be lead or other suitable material. The flexibility of the tubing, the coilspring, and the casing is'suiricient to provide resiliency to prevent excessive mutilation when the device is used as a billy or blackjack. i Having describedV the invention,- what is claimed is: i
' 1. A device of the character described comprising a handle grip having a breech plug therein, an barrel attached to the grip, a 'spring-urged vplunger slidable in the grip,'aV 20. thumb piece slidable upon the grip, means connecting the plunger With the thumb piece for simultaneous movement, means carriedV by the thumb piece and the plunger for engaging the grip to hold the parts at re 25 tracted position, exible tubing connected With the barrel, a coil spring connected With the. barrel and surrounding the tubing, a casing surrounding thecoil spring and a weight surrounding kthe outer endA portion of the 0 spring and housed Within the casing.
2. A device of the character described comprising a handle grip, a barrel attached to the grip,-iexible tubing connected With the barrel and being open at its outer end, and a coil spring connected With the barrel and surrounding the tubing. Y Y 4 3. A device of the character described comprising av handle grip, a barrel attached there- "to, a thumb piece slidable upon the grip and' o having a socket carrying a ball, the grip Vhaving a groove adapted to receive the ball With a depression at the end of said groove, the grip having an opening adapted to receive the ball, a plunger slidable inthe grip and a l spring-supported ball mounted in the plungerand/adapted to engage Vin the opening of the grip.
1l. A device of the character described cornprising. a handle grip having a slot, a barrel 0 attached thereto, a breech plug carried by the grip, a plunger slidable in the grip and having a resetting pin passing through the slot thereof, a spring means for forcing the plunger toward the breech plug, a thumb slide mounted upon the grip Vand having a slot registering with the slot in the grip and engaging the resetting pin of the plunger.
' In testimony whereof l aiiX my signature.
