Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. RIBLE, OF SOMERSET, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-HARVESTERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BIBLE, of Somerset, in the county ofPerry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gorn-Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, Ln which- Figure lis a top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line w Fig. '3 is a view showing the receiver of the cut product in position for discharging its load and forming the shock. Fig. 4 is a top view of the bed on which the carriage of the receiver rests.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts.
hy inventi'on has reference to collecting the out product and depositing it in shocks.
It consists ofare-entrant-angled reel to carry the stalks to the middle of the machine, and a receiving apparatus consisting of a bed and arms, operating as will be set forth, to hold the stalks until suicient have accumulated to constitute a shock, and deposit the same, butt downward, upon the ground, the detalsof construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawings, A is the frame, supported on wheels W W', and provided with two systems of cutters, a a', reciprocated by the foryward movement of the machine.
From the frame arise two standards, B B, supporting the reel R. The operatingedges b b of this reel are re-entrant, being formed by running rearward from the extreme arms c c to a middle arm, d, on shaft e. The action of this reel is to draw the cut product toward the middle line of the machine and facilitate its deposit on the receiver.
The receiver consists of a bedpiece,f, connected with a carriage, C, by a -joint, g, and connection h. with lever L, and two shafts, t' i, alongside of this bed with arms 7c l. The carA riage O rests on a bed-piece, D, of main frame, with slots m fn, as shown in Fig. 4, a guide-pin, p, Fig. 3, running in said slots.
The shafts ii have each a bent arm, q, which cross each other within the fork F of a rod, s, upon the lever L. The movement of this lever is thus made to produce the rotation of shafts i i and the consequent opening and closing of arms k Z.
The operation of the, machine is as follows: The receiver is placed in position of Fig. .1, with arms extended. The machine is driven forward so as to embrace and cut two rows of corn. .As the stalks are severed the reel B., by reason of its re-entrant form, draws them toward the middle of the machine and causes them to fall within the arms 7a l and upon a cord held by the forks tof arms l. When the receiver is Afilled the operator draws the carriage rearward until guide-pin p encounters slot n. The carriage is t-hen turned at right angles to its former position and run outward, as shown in Fig. 3. The lever L is then depressed, `causing bed-piecef to assume a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3. This causes fork F to draw arms q q together, rotating shafts i i and causing arms k Zto firmly grasp the stalks embraced by them.p The operator then ties the cord held by forks t around ,the heads of the stalk, and draws the bed-piecef down to the lever. This causes the arms 7c l to open and the shock is left standing. The receiver is then run into place and the machine driven forward.
What'I claim, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the bedfand armsrk l with the movable carriage C, or its equivalent, so as to receive the cut product. and deposit the same, substantially as described.
2. The re entrant reel, in combination with the/receiving apparatus, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. BIBLE.
