This invention relates to hydraulic jacks, and has for its principal object the-provision of an improved jack of this type. .In the drawings accompanying this specification,

In the embodiment of the invention set forth in the drawings, the jack is provided with a base 10, from which rises a reservoir casing 11 and a rain cylinder 12. The reservoir casing 11 and ram c linder 12 are cast integrally, in substantia ly elongated oval conformation in cross-section, with a straight transverse dividing wall 13 therebetween. The reservoir casing 11 and ram cylinder 12 are also cast integrally with the base 10, and the casting is strengthened by the provision of longitudinally disposed ,webs 14 extending between the adjacent walls of the reser- ,voir casing 11,`the ram cylinder 12, and the curved flanges 15 at opposite ends of the base 10.
Cast integrally with the base 10 and the side wall 16 of the reservoir casing 11 and ram cylinder 12, is a laterally'disposed exten'sion 17 having . transverse bores 18, and 19, the bore 19 communicating with thel ram cylinder 12, as indicated at 2 0, and being closed at its outer end by a threaded plug 21, and the bore 18 communicating with the reservoir casing 11, as indicated at 22, and having its outer end closed by a threaded 50 plug 23. A bore 24 extends longitudinally valve seat 26, cooperating with a ball valve 55 27, yieldably held to its seat by a spring 28.
The inner end of the bore 18 also is provided with a valve seat 29, cooperating with a ball valve l30, yieldably held to its seat by a spring 31. The /bore 18 communicates through a bore 32 with a pump cylinder 33, foned in a verticallyextending `portion 34 of the extension 17. The pump cylinder 33 has mounted therein al reciprocable plunger 35, extendingupwardly through a stuing box 36, and at lts outer end plvotally connected at 38 with a lever 37 pivotally connected at 39 with a link 40 pivotally secured to a fixed stud/'41. The opposite end of the lever 37 is provided #with a pair of transversely extending ins 42 adapted to accom- 'modate oneend o a handle 43, thehandle having bayonet slots 44 for receiving the y pins.42. The ystuiing box 36, best shown in Figure 5, has means for returning leakage to the reservoir casin 11. This means comprises an enlarged cy indrical rtion `45, having counter bores 46 and 47 g t e latter communicating with the plunger cylinder 33, and having its bottom defining walls 48 tapered.l Mounted in the counter bore 47 is a sleevelike acking member 49, having a cylindrical rtion 50 with the lower end 51 beveled or inclined havin also' a laterally extending flange52 seate upon the shoulder-53. Disv posed above the flange 52 of the packing member 49 is a washer 54 having in its periphery a circumferential groove 55 communicating through a-transverse bore 56 with the space adjacent 4the jplunger 35. The groove 55 also communicates with the reservoir by means of a duct 57 opening through the wallof the casting into the interior of the reservoir-11, and any liquid escaping ast the packing member 4 9 will be returne t0 the reservoir 11 by way of the bore 56, groove '55, and duct 57.

g From the above description it will he obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention provides a new and improved hydraulic j ack. At the same time those skilled in the art will appreciate that the embodiw ment of my invention herein shown and described may be used for other purposes than those speciically pointed out or suggested, and embodies advantages and uses other than those speciically pointed out or suggested l herein, and also that this particular embodiment of my invention herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriicing the advantages thereof, wherefore it will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim: 1. A hydraulic jack having a ram cylinder and a reservoir disposed in line and having a flat dividing wall common to both cylinder and reservoir, said cylinder having an un- 4 finished inner surface; a closure for the up per portion of said ram cylinder; a cylindrical ram mounted in said ram cylinder and extending through said closure, said ram being disposed throughout its length in spaced relation with the walls of said cylinder; and means for withdrawing Huid from said reser- 4voir and forcing the same into said ram cylinder entirely around said ram, for elevating said ram by displacement.
2. A hydraulic jack having a ram cylinder and a reservoir disposed in line and cast integrally with a fiat dividing wall common to both said cylinder and said reservoir, said cylinder having an unfinished inner surface; said dividing wall having a valve port opening therethrough for establishing communication between said ram cylinder and said reservoir; a closure for the upper portion of said ram cylinder; a ram mounted in said ram cylinder and extending through said ,in closure, said ram being disposed throughout its length in spaced relation with the walls of said cylinder means for withdrawing fluid from said reservoir and forcing the same into saidram cylinder entirely around said ram, for elevating said ram by displacement; and a valve extending through said reservoir; substantially at right angles to said dividing wall and operable to open and close the port in said wall to control communication between said ram cylinder and said reservoir. y In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
