This invention relates to hand bags, and more particularly' to hand bag frames and means for attaching covering material to H such frames. 1
Hand bags are extensively manufactured with metal frames to which the covering material,;such as leather for cloth, isv attached.
It has generally been the custom to sew the covering material to the frame; but it has been-found that the manufacture of hand' bags canbe facilitated, atthe same time, im-
at the corners the covering material is ingo securely attached .and has an unfinished appearance. .7
,It is an. object of this invention to provide a hand bag having a frame towhich the bag covering material may be easily, se-.
an curely and neatly attached by means of a 9 novel clamping means. n I A further object is the provision of a channelled hand bag frame to which the covering means may be securely clamped, and having novel means to compensate for the bunching of the material at the corners .of frame, especially when the corners are curved.
These 7 and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by 95 the simple andpractical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing,
forming parthereof, and in which: i

Figure 10 is a fragmentary perspective view of the modified form of holding plate shown in Fig. 9, which is provided at its outerends with lips designed to be snapped over the upwardly bent portion of the bottom flange of the frame member as shown in Fig.
Referringto the drawing in Figure 1 is shown a hand bag having a pair-of similar channelled U ShQPECl frame members hing; edly connected. Each frame member is made from a suitable blankof material bent to present, in cross-section, an outwardly disposed channel having an inner side wall 15 provided with top and bottom flanges 16, 17 directed outwardly at right angles thereto, the top flange 16 having'a flange 18 bent at right angles thereto and directed towardsthe bottom flange 17, the flange 18 being parallel to the inner wall 15.
The bottom flange 17 is wider than the top flange 16, and has a portion 19 which may be bent upwardly (see Fig. 2) to provide an outer side wall parallel with theinner wall 15, the portion 19' beingprovided with a plurality of apertures 20, which en= able it to be easily bent upwardly.
. As shown in Figure 5, the covering material 21 is doubled and inserted in the chan nelformed-by the wall 15, and the flanges 16, 1'1, 18; after which the portion 19 of flange 17 is bent upwardly to securely clamp the corners are curved as shown in the drawing, provision must be made for the bunching of thecoveringmaterial'. This lSflCCOlIlf plished by covering the material" at the cor ners with a flat plate 22,'curved to coincide by rivets 24 to the adjacent portions 19' of f ,outer' side wall to securely hold the covering with the corner, the plate having apertures 23 at its endsby meansof which it is secured the flange 17, as shown in Figure, said por; tion 1 9 being provided with elongated slots 23 for the reception of the'rivets 24 carried by the plate 22. The rivets 24:,after being passed through theslots23 are upset, as
shownin Figuredtheslots 23 being prefer v ably elongated, as shown in Figure 2,-to al- 20 lowtherivets 24; to have limited sliding engagement, therein for adjusting purposes see It is clear thatthe plate 22 will crowd: the covering material into the space betweenwall' 15 andvflanges 16 and 18, so that the outward appearance of the covering material is and finished at the corners.
QThe form of holding plate' shown in Fig ure,8 is provided, at its outer ends, with lugs" 25 dapted to be passed through adjacent 0 apertures 20in theportion 19 of the bottom flange 17 I and then upset,,as shown Figure7.'
In Figure 10 there is shown another form I of holding plate, whereinthe outer'ends of the plate are provided with lips 26 adapted to be snapped overthe portion 19 of the bot tom flange 17. If desired, the lips 26of the plate 22 may beindented, as at 27 ,to facili o this action; and the portion 19 ofthe bottom flange 17 may be provided with slots (not shown)v tor'eceive the indented portions 27 of, the lips 26. r
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple and effective means i as tt for e a h e QOVenng mammal mg an inner side wall havlngoutwardly d e to a frame member without necessitating sewing, at the same time compensating for the bunching of the covering material 5 the framehas curved corners. r
as descriptiveand illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative V of the invention, ofwhich obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope e herein indicatedand denoted in the appended ing an innerside wall provided with top-and bottom flanges, thetop flanges having aflange bent downwardly parallel to the inne'r side wall, and covering material positionedbetween the flanges, the bottom flange having a portion bent upward t0 present an outer side wall to securely hold the covering rial in the frame member. s
2. In ahand bag, a frame member comprismate ing an inner side wall provided with top and bottom flanges,-the top-flanges-ihaving a ing a portion bent upward to present an material in the frame member, said bottom 1 flange having a plurality of holes to "fac'ilitate bending of said portion.
E 3; Ina hand bag, a frame memberv-comprisagain inner side. walllprovided p midi said" frame having curved corners, covering material positioned between the flanges, the
bottom flange havinga portion bent upward except atjthefcurved;corners of the frame member to-p resent an outer side wall to hold the covering material in the frame, and plates curved tocoincide with the curvature of the curvedicorners, said plates being positioned in the fra'me at'the corners-"and attached to i the outer-side wall to prevent'bunchin'g of,
the covering material at the corners.
4, Ina hand bag, a frame member com- 1 prising aninner sidewall having outwardly I directed top and bottom flanges, said frame member having curved corners, lcoveringmaterial positioned between the flanges, the bot tom e flange having a 7 portion i bent upwardeXcept at the curved corners to presentan outer side w'allto. hold the ,covering'material o 19 in the frame, and curved flat platespositioned over the material; at the corners, said, plates preventing bunching ofvthe;mater'ial and enabling an easy and neatr assemblyat the corners.
T 5-111 ashandlbag, aframemember comprise:
rected top and bottom flanges, said frame member having curved corners. cover ng material positioned between, the flanges, means The foregoing disclosure is tobe regarded i on the bQttOmflan-ge whom the Covering terial in l the frame, and curved flat plates positioned in the curved corners to pre'vent bunching ofthe material at the corners 6, In a hand bag, a frame member com prising an inner side wall provided 'with'top flange bent downward parallel to the. inner andbottomflanges, the-topffiange havinga side wall, said vframe having curved corners, V
the frame member to present an outer side wall to holdthe covering material in the frame, plates curved tocoi'ricide with the curvature of the curvedeomers, said plates being positioned in the frame at the corners and having holes in their extremities, said bent up portions of the bottom flange having elongated slots adjacent the ends of the curved plates, and means passing through the slots and the holes in the plates to attach the plates to said apertured portions.
7 In a hand bag, a frame member comprising an inner side wall provided with top 10 and bottom flanges, the top flange having a flange bent downward parallel to the inner side wall, said frame having curved corners, covering material positioned between the flanges, the bottom flange having a portion bent upward except at the curved corners of the frame member to present an outer side wall to hold the covering material in the frame, and plates curved to coincide with the curvature of the curved corners, said plates being positioned in the frame at the the corners, each plate having lips at its ends adapted to be snapped over adjacent portions of the bottom flange to; securely hold the plate in position. This specification signed this 21st day of January, 1932.
