These several opera tions maybe easily, quickly and conveniently effected.bymanipulation of the proper controlling valves aswillbe readily appreciated.
treating timber, it has been found adf A retort constructed injaccordance with the i shaped joints of the doors and the body of the retort to secure and maintain a tight joint. It is further noted that there is an inner joint that between the band? and inner face of the door, and an outer joint, that between the flange .5 and extremity of the body 1, and that these two joints assure a tightclosure to prevent any possible escane of internalnressure. The V-form of the joints and the provision of suitable packing therebetween assure a tight joint which is'essential under certain conditions. l
What is claimed is:

The combination with a retort body and V a door therefor, of arcuate radially movable fastening means of Wedge cross section carried by the body and movable into wedgeshaped recesses of the door for securing the door, and cooperating cylinders and pistons for operating the fastening means simul- I taneously.
6. The combination with a retort body and a door therefor, of wedge-shaped curved fastening means disposed in an annular series on the body around the door and movable radially into wedge-shaped recesses in the edge of the door for securing the door, cylinders mounted upon the body, and pistons in the cylinders connected with said fastening means.
7 The combination with a retort body and a door snugly fitted within the bod and having, an outer flange overlapping the tremity of the body, there being a V-joint; between said flange and the inner face of the door, of wedge-shaped fastening devices carried by the body and movable radially into recesses joint tight.
8. The combination with a retort body having an inner projection a short distance from the endof the body provided-"with a V-groove, of a door fitting Within the end of the body andhaving a V-rib engaging 1 said groove, and wedge shaped fastening devices carried by the body and movable radi ally into recesses formed in the door to force in the doorto maintain said said rib into said groove and maintain a V tightly sealed joint therebetween.
9; The combination with a retort body having an inner projectiona short distance from the end of the body, and having a V-groove formed in the extremity of the body, and having a V-groove formed in the outer face of said projection, of a door fitting within the end of the retort body and having a \(-rib to enter the V-groove of the projection, and
having an outer flange 'overlapplng the end I of the body and provided with a V-rib to I enter the V-groove in the extremity ofthe body, and wedge-shaped fastening devices carried by the body, and movable radially into recesses formed in the door between both i of said V-grooves adapted to force said'ribs into said grooves and maintain tightly sealed joints therebetween.
