* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ULAUDIUS B. MOULTON, OF NORTH CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN JACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent 0. [87,405, dated-February 13, 1877; application filed December 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUmUs B. MOULTON, of North Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Jumpers, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in what are known as jumpers, or jackets, used by workingmen and mechanics.
The object of my invention is to add to the utility and efficiency of the jumper, and to increasetits adaptability to the wants of a large class of workingmen without adding materially to its cost.
The invention consists in the combination, with the jumper or jacket, of an apron, which may form a part of the same, or be wholly or in part secured to the jumper, or it may be entirely detachable.
The invention further consists in the combination, with the jumper, of a band or strap, arranged to operate so as to fasten the jumper around the body of the wearer, and also to answer the purpose of a support or brace for the workingman when at labor.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents the front view of a jumper embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are modifications of my invention.
The body a b, Figs. 1 and 2, of the jumper is composed of one or two pieces of cloth, cut and put together so as to be loose and easy over the breast and the shoulder-blades, somewhat tapering to the waist, and springing over the hips. Extending from the lower front edge of thejumper is an apron, c, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 1 the apron is shown as permanently attached to the jumper through half its width, as seen at h, and the remaining half is fastened to the other side of the jumper. This arrangement is for the purpose of adapting the apron to a jumper that opens in front, so that it can be readily put on. In Fig. 5, the apron is represented as divided in the center, and each part permanently secured to the jumper, so that both can open together and be fastened by means of buttons, or otherwise.
In Figs. 3 and 4, theapron is represented as extending entirely around the waist and made fast to or forming a part of the jumper halfway around l, and temporarily attached to the other half, m. It is cut away at the lower rear edges for convenience sake.
The apron may be of various lengths and widths, to suit the occupation or taste of the wearer. Sometimes it may be twofold or double, as shown in Fig. 1,0 and d representing two separate aprons.
The apron may also be made of some waterproof material, such as rubber or oil-cloth, according to the class of work for which it may be designed for use. When made dotachable, the apron may be secured to the jumper by means of buttons, hooks and eyes, or other suitable device.
The other important feature in my invention is the strap or brace which I have combined with my improved jumper. It is well known that in various laborious occupations of the workingman, a band or strap is frequently bound around the body at the waist, so as to serve as a brace and enable the wearer to endure a greater amount of labor with less fatigue than if such brace were not used.
The brace attachment consists of a strap or band, which is attached to the center of the back portion of the jumper, as shown at f .in.
Figs. 2 and 4. It is then passed through openings at each side to the inside of the jumper, being supported in loops at the inner sides, and thence passing out at the openings 8 s in front, the ends being fastened together by a buckle, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. By this means the jumper is held closely to the body in an easy, comfortable manner, avoiding the irregular creases or folds incident to the ordinary method of fastening a strap around the body, and allowing any fullness in the frontto be spread back to eachside, thus leaving it smooth in front, while at the same time the band serves as a brace to sustain the body. In this way the band or strap is not liable to interfere with the opera tions of the workman.
The jumper may be made, if desirable, to open down in the center of the back, from top to bottom, the edges being fastened by means of buttons or other device at the neck and back.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a jumper or jacket,
a b, of an apron, substantially as and for the name to this specification in the presence of purpose set forth. v two subseribin Witnesses '2. The combination with ajjumper 0r jack-= t et having an apron, 0 f a band, e, attached to GLAUDI'US B MOULTON' the jumper, and arranged to operate substan Witnesses: tially as and for the purposes set forth.
