desired without the necessity of repeating the operation of the key controlling the particular impression.
A further object of the invention is to provide means of the class named which shall n be of improved construction and operation.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
as thereto Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing a portion of the mechanism 1n plan.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 1O designates a typewriter frame having a power driven toothed'cylinder 11 journaled therein transversely of the frame. The typewriter is provided with the usual type bars 12 having sublever's 13 pivotally mounted at 14 on a cross-bar 15. Pivotally connected at 16 to each of the sublevers 13 is an actuator 17 provided with atooth '18 for engaging the toothed cylinder 11. A key lever 19 is provided for each actuator having a contact finger 20 arranged to engage .1
lug 21 on the actuator and press the actuator downwardly to cause the tooth 18 to engage the rotating cylinder 11. The cylinder 11 is continuously driven by means of a motor or other suitable power drive. A slight depression of a key lever 19 will connect the actuator with the power drive and operate the corresponding type bar 12. At the forward movement of the actuator the face 22 k thereof will engage an adjustable screw 23 to disconnect the actuator from the power drive. The spring 2 1 will return the 'actuator to its initial position. In this way for each depression of the key lever the actuator is connected to the power drive to efiect a printing mov ement of the type bar. The mechanism thus far described is similar to that of my prior application, Serial No. 732,615, filed August 18, 1924.
It frequently happens that the operator will wish to produce a series of successive movements 0' a particular type bar.- In underscoring, for example, it is common to operate the type bar which carries the dash for producing underscoring To accomplish this result a finger25 is provided with a laterally projecting lug 26 which overlies the forward end of the actuator 17 connected with the particular type bar which carries, the character to be repeated. The finger 25 is secured to a sleeve 27 journaled on-a shaft 28. The shaft 28 in turn is journaled in a bearing 29 carried by a bracket 30 which is mounted on the crossbar 31 for supporting the adjustable screw 23. The sleeve 27 is provided with a forwardly projecting arm 32' having pivotal connectionat 33 with a rearwardly extending arm 34 of a repeat key lever 35. The key lever 35 is pivoted at 36 on a forward extension 37 of the bracket 30. The extension 37 carries a lug 38 which supports a spring 39 for the repeat key lever 35. When the key lever 35 is depressed the lug. 26 will move downwardly to bring the tooth 18 into engagement with the rotatingcylinder 11. The actuator 17 will then be carried forwardly and downwardly to operate the type bar 12. When the actuator strikes the adjustable screw 23 it will be freed from the rotating cylinder and Will be drawn up by the-spring 24 into contact with the lug 26 and will then be slid back until the tooth 18 again engages one of the teeth of the cylinder 11. This operation will be repeated so long as the repeat-key is held in its de-' pressed position. In this way the type bar may be repeatedly operated as many times as desired by simply depressing the repeat It may be desirable to be able to repeat the operation of a plurality of type bars. This may be done by providing repeat keys for as many type bars as it is desirable to operate in this way. In the embodiment shown in the drawing, two repeat keys are shown. The repeat key 40 is connected through the arm 41 directly to the rock shaft 28 and a finger 42 is secured to the rock shaft 0 posite the particular actuator 43 correspon ng to the additional type bar equipped wlth repeat mechanism. Sto 44 are provlded on the extension 37 of t e bracket 30 to limit the movement of the repeat key 40. The movement of the repeat key 35 may be limited by a notch 45 in the finger 25 WhlCh engages a fixed plate 46. Iclaim:--. o 1.
