by means of which it is pivoted has a slot radial with respect to therocker shaft. A vertically reciprocating rod is mounted on a stud adjustable along the slot, the rod being connected at its upperend to some form of pawl to actuate the ratchet wheel of a train of take-up gears. I find in constructions of this type that it is dificult to weave cloth having a large number of picks to the inch, due to the fact that the stud can not be moved near enough to a vertical line passing through the rocker shaft to provide very small movements. It is a further object of my present invention to provide the rocker; foot with a slot out of horizontal alignment with the rocker shaft axis, preferably above the latter, and extending over said shaft so that if desired the amount of vertical motion on the reciprocating rod may be made to approach zero as a limit.
On certain types of looms, for instance those weaving narrow ware goods having a large number of picks to the inch, it is desirable to be able to var the time in the cycle of the loom at which t 'e take-up shall have its forward movement. In many looms the take-up is actuated when the lay IS on its forward stroke with the harnesses practically in mid-position to lessen the strain on the warp and at thetime the reed moves the cloth forward, thereby lessening the strain on the take-up mechanism, It is desirable in other instances to cause the take-up to operate at some time other than the heating-in of the filling so as not to interfere with the placing of the latter in the fabric. It is an important object of my present invention to provide a take-up of the type reviously referred to wherein the slot whic is movable with the rocker foot extends on both sides of a vertical line passing throu h the axis thereof thereby permitting the ceding movement of the upright reciprting rod to occur when the lay is moving either forwardly or rearwardly. I
ith these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds my invention resides in the combination an arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims. I
set forth, s v
- Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the forward In the accompanying drawings, wherein a I convenient embodiment of my nvention is portion of a loom having my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation taken in the direction of arrow 2, Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a detailed horizontal section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 shows a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 1 but with the parts moved so i as to effect feeding at a different point in the cycle of the loom.
Referring to the drawings, 1 have shown a loomside 10 having a lay ll-mounted on'a sword 12 having a bearing 13 mounted on a rocker pin or shaft 14.
The take-up mechanism includes a train of mechanism having a ratchet wheel 15'.
mounted on a stud 16. A lever 17 is pivoted to move about the stud 16 and has a slot 18 through which extends a stud 19 adjustable distances from the axis of the ratchet wheel. A feed pawl 20 is pivoted tothe lever'17 as at 21 and when drawn downwardly by means of a reciprocating rod 22 connected to the stud 19 will cause a partial rotation of the ratchet wheel 15. On the reverse stroke of the working or feeding pawl 20 a hold'pawl 23 pivoted about a fixed axis 24 will engage the ratchet to hold the same against retrograde movement.
It is to be understood that the structure shown at the upper part of Fig. 1 which causes rocking movement of the ratchet 15 forms no particular part of my present invention and is set forth herein to illustrate 'a take-up device which will befoperated by along the length of said slot to be at varying 7 lies entirely above the rocker shaft.
upward movement may effect this result, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The matter thus far described is of common construction and forms no part of my present invention, being similar to the form of take-up employed on silk looms.
In carrying my invention into effect I form the rocker foot R with a web 30 preferably integral therewith and extending thereabove. In said web I form a horizontal slot 31 through which extends a stud 82. The latter is held in place by a nut 33 on one side of the web and on the other side of the latter said stud forms a pivotal support for the lower end of the rod 22. As shown in Fig. 1 the slot 31 extends to the right and also to the left of a vertical line passing through the axis of the rocker shaft 14.
In operation, the lay will move back and forth by means of mechanism not shown to cause a slight rocking movement of the foot R, thus causing a vertical movement of the rod 22. As shown in Fig. 1 when the lay moves forwardly the rod 22 will be lowered because of the fact that the stud 32 is to the right of and in front of shaft 14, so that advance movement of the take-up will occur when the lay is advancing. As shown in Fig. 4, however, the stud 32 is at the left end of the slot 31 so that the rod 22 has a downward or feeding movement when the lay is moving rearwardly: In this way, by varying the location of the stud 32 along the slot 31, it is possible to effect feeding movement of the take-up when the lay is moving either forwardly or rearwardly.
It is also to be understood that by varying the position of the stud 32 the amount of the feed can be varied. When the stud is at the extreme right end of the slot the feed pawl is given its largest motion in a feeding direction when the lay is advancing. If, a smaller motion is required the stud is moved to a position nearer a vertical line passing through the shaft 14 and can approach such a position because of the fact that the slot A similar adjustment may be had when the stud is on the other side of the rocker shaft.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple form of take-up drive wherein the extent of motion of the feeding pawl can be varied from zero to the maximum in either direction, whereby feeding may occur either when the lay is moving forwardly or rearwardly. It will fur- .ther be seen that for either setting the'de stru otions.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that changes and modifications direction and a lay to move back and forth,
a rocker foot for the lay, a pivotal support for the foot, means moving with. the rocker foot defining aslot out of horizontal alignment with the axis of the lay, andconnec-v tions between the feeding member and the rocker foot including an element extending through the slot to be held at any one of a plurality of positions along the slot, said slot extending to a position substantially over the axis of the lay, the slot extending on both sides of the axis of the lay, whereby advance,
movement of the feeding member may be effected during the forward or backing movement of the lay. a 2. In a take-up for a loom provided with a member having a feeding movement in one direction and a lay to move back and forth, a rocker foot for the lay, a pivotal support for the foot, means carried by the rocker foot defining a slot extending forwardly and rearwardly of a vertical line passing through the axis of the pivotal support for the foot, and connections between the feeding member and said means including an element movable in the slot 'to be secured thereto in any position between the ends of the slot on either side of said vertical-line, whereby the take-up may have a feeding movement when the lay is moving either rearwardly or forwardly and wherein the degree of movement may varyfrom zero to. a finite quantity. 3. In a take-up for a loom provided with a member having a feeding'movement in one irection and a lay to move back and forth a rocker foot to support the lay, a rocker shaft about the axis of which the foot and lay move, a web integral with the rocker foot and extending above the shaft, saidweb having a slot therein which extends in front of and behind a vertical line passing through the axis of the rocker shaft, a stud passing through the slot and adjustable therealong to be secured to the rocker foot in any one of a plurality of positions with respect to the said vertical line on either side thereof, and a connector interposed between the stud and the feeding member, whereby said member can be given a feeding movement when the lay is moving either rearwardly or forwardly, the degree of movement being dependent upon the distance of the stud from the vertical line passing through the axis of the rocker shaft. I
4'. In a. take-up for a loom, a member having a feeding movement in one direction, a periodically rocking element to move backwardly and forwardly about a pivot, driving means on the element to actuate the member and connections to operatively relate the member and means on either side of a verti: cal line passing through the pivotso that the a 5 means may drive the member on either the backward or forward movement of the rock- L ing element.
5. In a take-up for a loom,- a driven takeup roll moving member having a feeding w movement in one direction, a driving member moving back and forth periodically and having a part movable toward and then from, the driven member during a back and forth motion-of the driving member and having 15 also a second Part movable away from an then toward the driven member duringthe same back and forth motion of the driving member; and means to connect the driven memberto either part of the driving member 30 to cause the driven member to have itsfeeding movement during either the back or forward movement of the driving member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature. 25 WILLIAM E. LUNDGREN.
