IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DINNER-BUCKEI AND LANTERN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OBADIAH M. BossERT, of Parnassus, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Dinner-Buckets and Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and ligures o f reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a partial side view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same.

This invention has relation to the production of a combined dinner-bucket and lantern for the use of miners, laborers, and others 5 and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the lantern attachment, of its raised ring or band, whereby it is connected in a sliding manner with the body of the bucket; of the vents of the lantern-case, and their sliding covers; of the lamp having two pairs offasteniug-studs at different heights; and, in connection therewith, of the convex base of the lantern-case, having a circular notched opening designed to receive the lamp, and engage with its studs, thereby securing it in place, as hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the dinner-bucket, having a depressed or concave base, B, designed to project downward into the lantern-case C, and having a rim or bead, a, to rest on the margin of the open top of the lantern, when the apparatus is placed upon the ground or other support. D represents an inner pan, which is placed Within the bucket or kettle A, resting on the edge thereof by means of its marginal bead b. E represents the lid, having upon its top a butter-cell, F, which is covered by th'e inverted cup G. H is the bail attached to the bucket, and c designates brackets on the sides ofthe bucket for holding knives and forks. Above the bead a is placed around the bucket a ring or band, K, fitting the same neatly, and capable of sliding thereon. This ring is raised above the marginal top of the lantern-case, to which it is attached by means of arms d, a space, e, being thus left between the ring and the margin of the lautern-case.

The object of this construction is to cause vthe lantern-case to drop when the bucket is raised or lifted from the ground or other base support, thereby leaving the space c between the bucket and lantern edge open for the passage of drafts of air. In this position the lantern-case will be 4suspended by the arms d from the ring K, which will rest on the bottom bead a of the bucket, and the latter will be protected by the air-currents from the heat of lamp, when the apparatus is used as a lantern. Ventilating-apertures j' are also made in the side wall of the lantern, and covers g are provided therefor, being connected by arms h with the base of the bucket. These arms are of sufcient length to let the covers g fall below the apertures f when the bucket is depressed and resting on the margin 7c of the lantern; but when the bucket is raised the covers are drawn upward by said arms and close the apertures. The base L or bottom of the lantern, is convex, rising upward centrally toward the large central circular opening into which the lamp N is received. Notches l are formed opposite each other, in the edge of the lamp-opening. On the side wall of the lamp are two pairs of horizontallyprojecting lugs, s s t t, whereof the former are placed higher than the latter, and are designed to be inserted through the notchesl when the lamp is adjusted in place, and engaged with the margin m of the lamp-opening, by turning the lamp in its seat. The lamp is inserted from below upward and secured by these lugs, two of which are engaged below and two -above the margin 'm of said lampopcning. Below the concave base ofthe lautern a space, z, is left, into which the bottom n of the lamp extends, its base being brought on a level with that of the lantern-case at its supporting-margin. The convex bottom B of the bucket A projects downward into the lantern-case when the latter is supported at its base. At the same time the lamp is raised by the convex bottom L of the lantern, so that the tlame ofthe lamp is brought as near to the bottom of the bucket as the construction will admit. V indicates a mica slide or door, through which the light of the lamp may shine. Other apertures or holes may b'e made for this purpose in the lantern-Wall, if thought proper.

The appearance of this apparatus is compact and neat, and it has sucient capacity for ordinary purposes. The bottom of the bucket being made concave, the length of its side Wall need not be great, and, being moderate, the addition of the lantern-extension will not seemvout of proportion, the combination will not appear lengthy, and yet the bucket Will have sufficient depth. If necessary, the lantern-case may be raised upon studs or feet, so that air will be admitted under its base.

This apparatus is designed to serve a useful purpose for miners, day-laborers, and all persons Who have to carry their midday meals to their Work. It serves to heat the food When set upon its base; and when lifted and carried in the hand, it serves as a lanternguide for such persons, many of Whom have to start out before day, and do not return home, especially in the Winter months, until after nightfall.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new,.and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Al. The combination, with a dinner-bucket, of a drop-lantern suspended thereto by a sliding attachment, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, With a dinner-bucket, having a base bead, a, of the lantern-case C, having a raised ring, K, and connecting-arms d, substantially as specified. I

3. The combination, With the vent fof the drop-lantern, of a sliding cover, g, having an arm, h, attached to a bucket above said lantern, substantially as specified.

4:. The combination in alantern, having the convex bottom L, and a lamp supported thereby, of a dinner-bucket resting on said lantern,
