1 ard receiving boards will be securely held on the car outer walls, for the purpose of receiving information as to car movement or routing, or to receive information as to inflammable or explosive material in the car, in keeping with the requirements of the Interstate Commerce Commission.
The invention also has for its object the provision of holding means which will permit renewal or replacement of the board or boards when occasion requires.
The objects and advantages of my invention will be readily comprehended from the following detailed description of the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates my improved holder in elevation.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same; a portion being in section.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the board holding members or brackets.
Figure 4 is a crosssectional view taken substantially on the line l e of Figure 1 as viewed by the arrows.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of bracket member.
In the shipment of freight the designation and routing of the cars is applied to the car outer wall, and information as to the inflammable or explosive nature of the car contents must also be set forth on a suitable placard or board, in keeping with the rules of the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Placard and routing boards have heretofore been bolted or otherwise directly secured to the car walls, with the securing means or bolts disposed through the placards or boards. As the boards are exposed to the elements, they soon deteriorate and become loose and drop off and are lost along the right-of-way.
My improved means involves a suitable placard or board holding bracket which preferably consists of a pair of socketed castings of similar construction and each consisting of an elongated member 10, of any suitable Serial No. 562,103.
length and having the two parallelly arranged walls or flanges 11, 12, formed integral with the longitudinal marginal edges of the main wall 13; while the ends of these three walls are united by the integral end Walls 14,14.
In order to prevent retention of water, snow, or dirt, the main wall, and particularly adjacent to the ends, is shown provided with openings as at 15.
The end walls 14, 14, are preferably made to slope and therefore the side wall or flange 12 is slightly shorter than the wall 11; the
wall 12 being intended to constitute the forward or outer side of the bracket disposed away from the car wall.
The car contacting side wall or flange 11, is provided with integral lobes or extensions 16,.apertured to receive suitable fastening means such as flat-headed screws as shown at 17 whereby the bracket members 10 are secured to opposite ends of the board or boards indicated at 18, before the bracket members are secured to the car wall.
The outer face of the main wall 13, and preferably adj acent to the side wall or flange 11, is provided with one or more extensions or cars as at 19, apertured to receive a suitable bolt, as at 20 in Figure 41, for securing the bracket members 10 to the car wall, or to receive suitable rivets if intended to be attached to a steel car; a portion of a car wall being indicated at 21 in Figure 41.
In the drawing, the information receiving portion is shown consisting of three boards having tongues and grooves on the longitudinal edges, see Figure 2, although a single or other suitable number of matching boards may be employed. The one longitudinal edge of the upper and lower boards is beveled to match the sloping end walls 14: of the bracket members 10; and the boards are preferably of a thickness which permits the ends of the boards to be inserted into the sockets of the lbracket members 10, as shown in Figure 1, so as to afford a comparatively snug fit.
With the bracket members '10 (which are preferably identical in construction) independent of each other, merely one bracket member 10 may be secured to the adjacent end or ends of the board or boards 18 by the mediate walls of the members being provided screws 17 thus enabling a replacement or rewith drain openings and wlth apertured newa-l of the boards to be made by simply relobes disposed laterally from the rear vertical moving the other bracket from the car wall. edges of the members.
The ends of the bracket members are made sloping as shown for the purpose of shedding moisture, snow and the like; and by making the bracket members uniform, with both ends alike, the bracket members are interchangeable as right or left hand members.
In Figure 5 I illustrate a modified form of bracket member 22, having main wall 23, which may also be provided with the vent openings 15, and has the two side walls or flanges 24, 25. The bracket member 22, is preferably provided at its lower end with an end wall 26; while the top of the bracket member is open as shown. The outer side of the main wall 23 is likewise provided with apertured attaching lobes or ears 19 for receiving bolts whereby the bracket members are secured to the car wall.
WVith this construction, the information receiving boards 18, may be slid into place, edgewisely, through the upper open ends, while the bracket members are in place on the car wall. The upper longitudinal edge of the board may be beveled as heretofore men tioned so as to properly shed moisture away from the rear or car-wall side.
With the type of bracket shown in Figure 5, removal of the bracket member or members from the car wall will. not be necessary.
As is apparent from the constructions shown, the placard or information receiving boards will be securely held in place without large fastenings bolts passing through the boards and hence the deterioration of the boards, by reason of moisture entering the bolt-holes, is prevented and a longer lived placard or routing board provided.
My improved holders have preferably been shown and described as consisting of separate bracket members or castings, but it is apparent that modifications may be made, without, however, departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A holder of the character described comprising a pair of elongated channeled castings adapted to receive the ends of a board therein, said cast-ings each having oppositely sloping end walls, the rear marginal wall of each casting having laterally disposed apertured ears, while the intermediate outer side wall is provided with laterally disposed attaching lobes.
