Description

Patented June 28, 1932- V'UNITED-ISTVATES PATENT m WALTER F. ROGERS AND JOHN C. ROGERS, OF CIGERO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO CROWN i STOVE WORKS; OF GICERO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS DRAWER CONSTRUCTION son s'rovEs Application filed May 23,
This application is a continuation, in part, of our co-pending application Serial N 0. 470,040 filed July 23,1930.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of drawer construction which is particularly adapted for use in connection with the broiler ovens of gas stoves; to provide improved mechanism for slidably supporting the drawer in the oven; to provide improved means for securing the drawer against accidental withdrawal from the oven; to provide a drawer of this kind having an improved form of hinged door adapted to serve as a closure for the front of the drawer and also as a closure for the oven when the drawer is closed; to provide an improved formof latch for securing the door in its closed position; and to provide improved means for locking said latch agalnst movement while the drawer is closed so as to prevent opening of the door while the drawer is in closed position.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a gas stove showing an improved broiler drawer appliedthereto; the drawer being partly withdrawn from the oven and the hinged doorbeing open. v V
Figure2 is a vertical section of the oven and drawer, certain portions being shown in elevation, and the" drawer being in closed position. I
The improved drawer construction may be used in connection with many different types of cabinets or stoves but, in the form herein shown, it is applied to the broileroven of a gas range: Inasmuch as the invention relates particularly to the drawer construction, the drawing shows only as much of the stove as will be helpful in an understanding of the invention. In the form shown, the gas range com- ;5 prises a frame which'includes a bottom wall 1, side walls 2, and 3, rear wall 4 and front wall 5, arranged to define the usual baking oven 6 and broiler compartment 7 at one end of the stove. The usual burner, notshown, ea is'located in the upper part of the broiler the sheet metal pan 1931. Serial No. 539,553.
compartment. Formed in the front wall 5 is an opening 8, through whichthe improved drawer extends. l
Mounted on the bottom wall 1, is a pair of substantially parallel guideways 9 arranged at respectively opposite sides of the broiler compartment. Each of the guideways is in the form of an inverted channel bar having an inturned flange 1O rigidly secured to the bottom wall 1. tracks for guiding the drawer. Y
Mounted on the guideways 9 near the forward ends thereof, are depending stop pins 11, which are arranged to limit the outward movement of the drawer, as hereinafterdescribed. Mounted on the bpttom wall 1, adjacent the forward extremities of the guideways 9 is a pair of rollers 12 for slidably supporting the drawer.
In the form shown, the improved drawer These guideways form comprises a sheet metalpan 13 having an open front, to which is rigidlys'ecured a metal frame 14 which supports a hinged door 15. The frame 14 serves as a reinforcement for and it may be made of cast metal, angle bars or similar material. The side walls of the pan 13 are equipped with the usual tracks 16 for supporting a re movable tray 17 Mounted onthe bottom of the pan 13, adjacent the rear end thereof, is
a pair of rollers, 18 adapted to slidably engage the bottom of the oven. The rollers 18 are spaced inwardly from the side edges of the drawer so as to. clear the rollers 12 when the drawer is withdrawn.
\ Mountedon respectively opposite sides of the p an 13, adjacent tlfe lower edges thereof, is a pair of channel-shaped rails 19, ,which project rearwardly beyond the rear'wall of the pan. J ournaled on the rear ends of the rails 19 are rollers 20 which ride within the channel ed to on age the stop pins 11 for limiting the outward movement of the drawer.
The rails 19 are provided with flanges 21 which are rigidly secured to the bottom of the pan 13. The flanges 21 form shoes which ride upon the rollers 12 when the drawer is moved back and forth. The forward extremities of the flanges 21 terminate short of guides 9. These rollers 20 are adaptthe forward end of the drawer so that, when the drawer is fully closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the rollers 12 engage the bottom of the pan in advance of the rails 19. The forward eX- tremities of the flanges 21 form shoulders 22 which are adapted to co-act with the rollers 12 to secure the drawer against accidental withdrawal.
The door 15 is preferably sheet metal and is provided with a cast metal yoke 23 which is hinged to the frame 14 by pins 24. When the door is in its open position, as shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the yoke 23 engage the rear face of the frame 1 1 for securing the door against further downward movement. A suitable handle 25 is secured to the outer face of the door.
Formed in the door adjacent the handle, is an opening 26, in which is mounted a latch 27 which is pivoted to a bearing plate 28 secured inside of the door. The outer end of the latch is located close to the handle 25, so that it may be depressed by the thumb of a hand grasping the handle. The inner end of the latch is adapted to engage a keeper 29 formed on the upper edge of the frame member 14 for securing the door in its closed position. The pivot of the latch is positioned so that the inner end of the latch drops by gravity into locking engagement with the keeper 29.
When the drawer is closed, the pivoted latch 27 is secured against effective rocking movement by a lug 30 mounted on the inner face of the wall 5 adjacent the opening 8. With this improved construction, the hinged door 15 cannot be opened until the drawer is withdrawn sufficiently to permit operation of the latch 27-.
In operation, when. access to the broiler V oven is desired, the drawer is opened by an outward pull on the handle 25. The pull must be sufficient to lift the shoulders 22 on top of the rollers 12. When the drawer is pulled outwardly, the flanges 21 ride upon the rollers 12, and the rollers 20 engage the guides 9 so as to secure the drawer against downward tilting.
When it is desired to have access to the drawer throu h the front end thereof, the drawer must hrst be withdrawn sufliciently to release the latch from the lug 30. By depressing the outer end of thelatch, the inner end thereof may be disengaged from the keeper 29.
To remove the entire drawer from the oven, as for instance, when it is desired to clean the oven, the drawer is pulled outwardly until the rollers 20 strike the pins 11. The outer end of the drawer is then raised to permit the rollers to pass beneath the stop pins 11.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction may be altered without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
We claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a compartment having a wall provided with an opening, a drawer slidably mounted in said compartment and adapted to be withdrawn through said opening, a door hinged on the outer end of said drawer, a movable latch for securing said hinged door in closed position, and a shoulder adapted to secure said latch in its locking position while said drawer is closed.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame defining a compartment having an opening at one end thereof, a drawer slidably mounted in said compartment and movable through said opening, a door hinged on the outer end -of said drawer, a movable latch slidably mounted in said compartment and 1 movable through said opening, a door hinged on the outer end of said drawer, a latch movably mounted on said door and adapted to secure said hinged door in closed position, and a shoulder on said frame adapted to secure said latch against movement relative to said door when saiddrawer is closed.
1. A device of the class described comprising a frame defining a compartment having an opening at one end thereof, a drawer slidably mounted in said compartment and movable through said opening, a door hinged on the outer end of said drawer, a keeper on said drawer, a latch pivotally mounted on said door for engagement with said keeper to secure said door in closed position, and means on said frame adapted to secure said latch against disengagement from said keeper while said drawer is closed.
