The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cover feed for supplying covers o'ne'at a time to a machine for attaching the same to a can body.
An object of the invention is to provide a cover feed which may be readily adjusted for operation upon cans of"diife'rent diameters without disturbing the actuating mechanism' v friction plug covers stacked and the'irregu for the cover fee A further object of the invention is to provide a cover feed of the above character wherein a series of supporting and releasing fingers are provided for supporting the stack and wherein said fingers may be simultaneously shifted radially of the stack holder to different operating positions. 5
A further object of-the invention is to pro vide a stack holder having supporting'posts for supporting the stack wherein the stacked covers are intermittently engaged by the posts at each feeding operation'for uniformly placing the covers one above another.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed. i

The invention is directed to a cover feed for feeding covers to be attached to can bodies and is intended to-be used in connection with any type of covers whether .for being joined to'a can body by a double seam or by being seated in a can body and frictionallyattached thereto. The covers are stacked one onanother and are supported by a series of fingers which areoscillated for the purpose of releasing one cover at a time from the bottom of the stack. These cover fingers are oscillated by means of a ring which in turn is oscillated about the center of the stack and is connected. by means of'a link to each finger. These fin-. gers are mounted on arms which are pivoted to the supporting base of the stack holder and whenthe arm is swung about its pivot the finger carried thereby is moved toward or from the center of the stack holder.
Associated with the arms is a ring having cam slots therein, that is, slots which are cc: centric to the center of the stack and when. this ring is shifted -'it will simultaneously shift the position of the arms and thus shift the position of the pivoted fingers carried thereby. The ring 33 is provided with a series of recesses 39 and between these recesses is a raised rib 40. The segmental members38 are each provided with an overhanging ledge 41. This serves as a means for holding the ring 33 center relative to the stack and at the same time permits it to be shifted about said center when the clamping bolt 36 therefor is released. I

Attached to the tubular member 13 of the post which forms the stack holder is a rib 44 which projects radially from the outer face of said tubular member. This post is rigid, with the supporting and releasing finger 16 and when said fingers are oscillated the posts oscillate. This will move the rib 44 toward and from the center of the stack. Byadjusting the tubular member 13 these ribs are so .placed that when the fingers are oscillated in one direction the ribs will'come into contact with the covers and move the covers so that they will be centered and placed diwhich-forms the friction plug which is forced down into a seat in the container. This is a well known type of friction plug closure,
and detailed description thereof is not thought necessary. When such covers are placed one on the other they are likely to become out of alinement and irregularly positioned one on another so that their flanges may make contact at one side of the stack and be widely separated at the other side, as shown in Fig. 12. Vhen, however, the ribs on the posts engage these covers they engage them so that they become centered one above the other and they are so delivered to g This insures that the flanges will be spaced propi erly to permit the projections 18 to move in between the flange of the lowermost cover and the flange of the cover next above.
