Description
June 7, 1932. E. H. SCHANE REEL Filed June 28, 1928 l-JVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented June 7, 1932 UNITED STATES EDWARD H. SCHANE, OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO REEL Application filed June 28, 1928, Serial No. 289,007.
This invention relates to a reel whichis more particularly intended to receive plain or barbed wire wound upon the same in shipment from the mill to the ultimate consumer.
iv One of the objects of the invention is to provide a reel made up of a plurality of parts which may be disassembled so that the reel may be shipped or stored in knock-down condition, and further to provide in such a type H ofreel a positive interlocking arrangement of the parts, such that the parts of the reel when assembled are practically rigidly assembled so that when the reel is mounted upon aspindle or mandrel for the purpose '13 of winding wire upon the reel or of winding 7 it off of the reel, the parts of the reel will be positively retained against any spreading action or any other relative movement which would be likely to cause collapse of the reel. 7
' :i; A further object of the invention is to provide a reel for the purpose described, in which the same may be made of wire at low cost of manufacture, both from the viewpoint of material involved and from the viewpoint of labor required in manufacturing the same.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which p Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the 3o assembled parts of the reel.
' Figure 2 is an end elevation of the reel. v
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the reel. Figure 4 is an elevation with'portions in section showing a. detail of construction of the reel.
Referring to the drawing, the reel comprises four parts. The membersl and 2 may be termed end or head members and are each,
in the construction as shown, formed from a to single piece of wire bent to have the four extending arms somewhat resembling a cross in configuration. V
The barrel of the reel is made up of two members which are generally indicated at 3 ps5 and 4. The member l is provided with two parallel side members which are indicated at 5 and 6, respectively, and oppositely disposed end portions which lie in a plane that is substantially at right angles to the side members 5 and 6.
The end members are similar and are each formed to have a loop or substantially half round portion 7 which cooperates with a similarloop upon the other of the barrel members, as will be later explained, to form an eye for the reception of a mandrel or shaft upon whichthe reel may be mounted. Each end portion is also formed with a reentrant loop 8, the purpose of which, and its mode of cooperation with other parts of the reel, will (so 7 be later described.
Each ofthe side members 5 and. 6 are at their opposite ends provided with bends in the wire, which may be termed notches, as indicated at 9, so that when the parts of the barrel of the reel are assembled with respect to the head members 1 and 2, these notches such as represented at 9 will serve to receive and retain the portions of the head members, and thus prevent their ready dislodgement, although thenotches are not so deep but that V the heads may be readily disassembled by the application of a proper amount of force.
The second member of the barrel portion of the reel is formed by side members 10 and 11, 7 which eXtend substantially parallel witheach othenand at their ends have connecting portions, which connecting portions are each formed with a substantially half round loop 12, which cooperates with the half round loop 7 on the other member ofthe barrel or cage, thus completing an eye adapted for the reception of a mandrel or shaft for supporting the reel. i p
The connecting portion at each end of the members 10 and 11 has an open loop portion 13, which is more particularlvshown in Fig ure 4 and which is so formed that, when the members of the barrel or cage are assembled, the part 13 will engage with the loop portion 8 and thus provide a positive lock, preventing any spreading of the members of the barrel or cage when the head members are assembled with respe'ct thereto.
It will be notedthat when the head members are assembled with respect to the body or barrel, the two members of the cage-are held in proper position with respect to each otherand any tendency of the eye, formed by the half round portions 7 andS tospread,
i ll) is resisted by the interengagement between thereof opposite to the engaging parts 8 and 13 is resisted by the head members, which engage with the side members and 10 under a certain amount of tension, which will eii'ectively prevent distortion of the eye.
' Each of the members of the cage or barrel is made out of a single piece of wire bent to proper form, and the endsof the wire may be welded or otherwise secured to each other.
As has before been explained, the loop 8 at each end of the cage liesin substantially the same plane as the other portion of the wire which connectsthe members 5 and 6. The loop 13, however, is bent out of the plane in which the half round portion 12 lies, the purpose being to enable the portion 13' to readily cooperate with the rounded portion 8.
As will be evident, the reel may be disase sembled and the parts thereof when disassembled will lie substantially flat, thus permitting it to be stored or shipped in flattened or knock-down condition.
I am aware that it has been proposed heretoiore to provide a cage or barrel for a reel in which the end members are so formed as to provide an eye for the reception of a mandrel or shaft, but in such types it has been the common practice to form the eye by twistingthe adjacent portions of the reel,to thereby interlock the members forming the barrel. This undoubtedly serves the purpose of providing a rigid barrel for a reel, but it is impossible to ship such a reel in knock-down condition for the barrel of the reel is a permanently formed structure.
In the present invention all the advantages of .1V barrel which the eye is formed by twisting the adjacent portiensof the wire are secured, and the additional advantage is secured of ability to disassemble the parts of the reel, so that it maybe handled in knock- =5 down condition. v I v It is obvious that some changes may be made in the construction as disclosed, without 'in'any way departing from the/spirit of this invention. 7
Havlng thus descr bed my invention what 7 I claim 1s:
1. A reel comprising a barrel and separable head members, the said barrel comprising two independent substantially rectangularmemhers which when assembled have their end portions disposed diagonally with respect to 1 7 each other, each of the end portions being provided with substantially semi-circularportions which cooperate to form. an eye and the end portions beingprovided with interlockingloops which prevent the members of the barrel from spreading. I
2. 'A reel comprising -'a barrel and removable head members, the said barrel comprising a pairof substantially rectangular members having their end portions disposed diagonally with respect to each other when the saidmembers are in assembled position, the end portions of one of said members each having a loop lying in substantially the same plane as the plane of the end portions, the other of said members having each of its end portions provided with a loopextending at substantially right angles with the plane of the end portions, the said loops upon the end portions of the respective members being adapted to interlock when the members are in engagement, the said end portions being formed with oppositely extending rounded portions which when the members are assembled form an eye.
3. A reel comprising a barrel and separable head members, the said barrel comprising a pair of substantially rectangular members having their end portions disposed diagonally with respect to each. other when thesaid members are assembled with respect to each other, each of the end portions being provided with rounded portions which cooperate to form eyes, the end portions of one of said members being provided with loops and the end portion of the other of said members being provided with loops which are adapted two independent barrel members, the end portions of each of said barrelmembers being provided with portions which cooperate 'to form an, eye and further provided with preformed loops adapted to interlock on only one side of said eye to prevent said barrel-mem bers from spreading.
In testimony whereof, I'hereuntov affix my signature. 7
