Referring now to .the drawings for a more,

The outer jaw 18 is; provided with a sleeve 1) for a mounting on the cylinder and this jaw is adapted to have'a slidable movement on the cylinder so that it may be adjusted longitudinally thereof. The cylinder is provided with a slot 19 and by Ineans'oii a set-screw 20 which is threaded in the sleeve 6 said outer jaw may be. adjusted longitudinally ofthe cylinder; and by means of this set-screw 20 any, rotatable movement of said outer, jaw on. the cylin-dernfiay be prevented; and by providing the slot 19 and this set-screw the outer .jaw 18 may be conveniently adjusted.

Numeral 26 indicates a spring which is carried by the screw 23 and is disposed between the jaws and which operates, normally, to separate the jaws.
The combined stone and file holder is indicated generally at 27. It preferably consists of an elongated loop 28 provided at one end with a head-piece 29 and a foot-piece 30. A handle 31 is threaded in the head-piece and a spindle 32 is threaded in the foot-piece. Numeral 33 indicates an elongated stone preferabl rectangular in cross-section which may e disposed in the loop and may be secured therein by rotating the handle, a contact-block 34 best shown inFig. 2 being provided and interposed between the end of the stone andend of the screw 35 of the handle.
Numeral 36 indicates a file which is disposed at the side of the stone, said file being secured in the loop by rotating the handle in one direction, the block 34: being provided with a lip 37 as an aid in holding one end of the file.
Numeral 38 indicates an upright guide which projects above one end of the base 14, said guide being provided with an aperture 39 for receiving the spindle 32, the guide at the edges of the aperture 39 being chamfered or reamed to permit a free movement of the spindle therein when said element 27 is reciprocated. I
In operation, it will be understood that the element 27 is moved forwardly and rearwardly, the spindle moving through the aperture of the guide 38, the stone or file bearing upon the ed e of the blade to be sharpened and said blade eing firmly held between the jaws 18 and 21, the edge ofthe blade'being disposed horizontally and somewhat above the edges of the jaws.
In order that the blade may be disposed at a suitable angle to the stone or file during operation, and that the angle may be obtuse or acute, as may be required, the herein described invention operates to great advantage. It will be seen that if the jaws are disposed at approximately a right-angle to the base the angle will be obtuse for filing or sharpening the blade; and it the jaws have been swung rearwardly the angle may be acute.
According to the construction as disclosed, the jaws, after the finger-nut 17 has been rotated in one direction may be readily swung rearwardly a suitable distance so that the jaws and blade will be disposed at an acute angle to the stone 33 or file 36, and after a suitable adjustment has been made the finger-nut 17 may be rotated in a reverse direction for preventing any swinging movement of the jaws.
It has been stated that the jaws may be adthe file or stone with the blade will be at right-angles to said blade. Also when sharpening short blades or the blades of scissors the may be adjusted so that these blades will be disposed above the central part of the base.
Numerals 40 indicate a pair of cams each having a threaded stem all best shown in Fig. 9, and provided with a finger-nut 42. The outer jaw is provided with anaperture 43 and a slot 44 for receiving the stems 41. of the cams, and since the cams are mounted eccentrically they may be adjusted for supporting the blades higher above the edges of the outer blade than ordinary, this being of great advantage when sharpening the blades of scissors, and when sharpening large blades they may be disposed lower than ordinary.
It will be understood that, on account of the provision of the slot 4! one of the cams may be adjusted in the outer-jaw for supporting long or short blades as may be re.- quired. I
It will be understood that the particular form shown for the aperture 39 is to permit a free movement of the spindle when the latter is disposed at various angles to the guide 38. Also it will be understood that the screw 23 is threaded in the aperture 45 (Fig. 4) and traverses the aperture 46 of the inner jaw (Fig. 6), also that the set screw 20 is thread ed in the aperture 47 (Fig. 4).
It will be appreciated that the tool or apparatus as described provides all necessary adjustments needed for holding shears or scissors of all ordinary sizes in proper position ready for sharpening and that the several adjustments mentioned may be made readily and conveniently.

-1. In devices for the purpose described, a
base provided with a guide, a cylinder rotatably mounted on the base and havin a slot formed longitudinally therein, an element threaded on the cylinder for controllingv the rotatable movements thereof, a jaw mounted to permit adjustments longitudinally of the cylinder and having a set screw engaging in said slot, a second jaw pivotally mounted on andarranged to be pressedtoward the first named jaw, and an elongated sharpening ele- .ment for longitudinal reciprocation having a part engaging said guide.

In devices for the purpose described, a base provided with an apertured guide, an elongated sharpening element arranged for longitudinal reciprocation and having a part disposed in the aperture of the guide, a cyl I cinder mounted to permit rotatable movements of the base, an element threaded on the cylinder for controlling the rotatable movements thereof, a aw mounted to permit adjustments thereof longitudinally ofthe. cylinder and having a setscrew engagingthe cylinder, a second jaw, a screw traversing said jaws, a wing-nut movable on the screw for pressing the second ,jaw toward the first named jaw, and a spring between said jaws for resistlng a pressure of the second jaw toward its said first named jaw.
