The principal objects of this invention are to devise an extension table construction which may be applied to desks or cabinets, which may be housed within the cabinet or extended therefrom to project so as to extend over a bed or a chair and which may be adjustcd to various heights.

The principal feature of the invention consists in the novel construction of a slidable 1o frame and its arrangement within a cabinet whereby a hinged table carried by the frame may be supported in a raised position extended from the cabinet or may be housed Within the cabinet.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cabinet to which the present invention is applied showing the extension table in a raised and extended position.

Figure 2 is a vertical cross-sectional View through the cabinet showing the extension table raised.

Figure 3 is an enlarged elevational view of the hinged portion of the extension table and its support.

Figure 4 is a side elevational sectional View showing the table in the extended position.

Figure 5 is a side' elevational sectional detail showing the table in the housed position.

In the application of the invention herein shown, the cabinet 1 is provided with a vertica-l pocket 2 arranged at one side thereof which is open at the top and a slidable cover 3 arranged on top of the cabinet is adapted to close the pocket and may be moved longitudinally to uncover the top of the pocket.

An inverted U-shaped metal frame 4 is vertically arranged within the pocket 2 and slidably supported in brackets 5 secured to the front and back walls thereof.

The lower ends 6 of the frame 4 are turned inwardly and rods 7 are rigidly mounted between the ends 6 and the cross top of the frame. These rods are parallelly arranged and form the guides for a pair of bracket members 8 which are slidably mounted thereo A table member 9 provided with hinge brackets 10 secured at one edge thereof is pivotally supported from the'brackets 8 and When the table is in the position shown in Figures 1 and 4, the members 10 rest upon the-top of the frame 4 and support the table in a` horizontal position.

A bar 11 rigidly secured to the top bar of the frame 4 centrally of its width extends downwardly and is slidably mounted in a tubular standard 12 secured within the pocket 2 of the cabinet close to the end Wall.

The bar is formed with a plurality of ratchet notches 13 which are engaged by a latch member 14 pivotally supported on the standard.

A. rod 15 connected to the latch member extends horizontally through a hole in the/ front wall of the cabinet and is provided with an operating knob 16 on its outer end. A coil spring 1 7 encircles the rod 15 and holds the latch member in constant engagement with the notched bar 11.

The frame 4 and the rods 7 forming a part therewith slide freely vertically of the cabinet and when the cover is moved back to uncover the top of thepocket 2, the frame may be raised to any desired position and it will be held in the raised position by the latch member 14 engaging the ratchet bar 11.

The tab-le 9, which when the device is arranged within the pocket, is supported in a vertical position is, upon the raising of the frame, swung over the top thereof into the position shown in Figures 1 and 4.

A table suoli as described will be very easily handled by a nurse attending a patient and even though she may be carrying a tray, she can slide the tabletop back clear of the pocket, raise the table frame, swingthe table top into position with one hand quite readily. When the table is not required it is swung from its horizontal position and simply by pulling out on the knob 16 and releasing the ratchet bar 11 the frame and table top may be lowered into the retaining pocket, which is then covered over by the sliding table top.

The device is extremely simple and details of the construction may be altered without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. An extension table having vertical guides, a member vertically slidable in said guides,

pivotally connected with the .table whereby the latter may be extended or swung relative to said frame.

3. A cabinet having a vertical pocket therein open at the top, a frame slidably mounted and adapted to extend out of said pocket, means for holding said frame in adjusted positions, support members slidably mounted on said slidably mounted frame for movement from end to end thereof, and a table pivotally mounted on said support members to be extended. outwardly therefrom.

4. A cabinet, comprising a stand, a mem ber vertically slidable in said stand and adapted to extend thereabove andhaving bracket members slidable vertically thereon, and a table pivoted at one end on said bracket members and adapted when said slidable brackets are moved to the top of said vertically slidable member to be swung outwardly over the latter and extend in a rigid horizontal position from the top thereof.

5. A cabinet having a rigid U-shaped frame the side members of which are slidably supported therein, guide bars carried by said U- shaped frame, brackets slidably mounted on said guide bars, a table member hinged to said brackets and adapted to be swung over the frame, said frame engaging the table member to support the table in a horizontal.

6. A cabinet comprising a member vertically slidahle in said cabinet, a table hinged to said member and adapted to extend in a horizontal position, a ratchet bar rigidly secured to said slidable member, guide means for said ratchet bar, a latch member pivotally mounted within the cabinet and engaging said ratchet bar, a rod pivotall connected to said latch member and extending outwardly through the wall of the cabinet for releasing said latch, and a coiled spring encircling said rod within the cabinet and exerting an inward pressure on said rod to hold said latch normally in locking position.

A cabinet having a vertical pocket in one end open at the top, brackets mounted in said pocket, a U-shaped metal frame slidable in said brackets, bars rigidly secured in said' U- shaped frame and arranged parallel with the sides thereof, bracket members slidably mounted on said bars, bracket members hinged to the aforesaid brackets a table top secured to the latter brackets an adapted to rest upon the top of the U-shaped frame when in the extended position, and means for holding said U-shaped frame and table supported A thereby in adjusted positions.

8. In an extension table, a base, an inverted U-shaped frame having its side members slidably mounted in said base and having the lower end extremities turned laterally inward, guide rods secured at their lower ends in said laterally turned portions and at their upper ends in the connecting top portion of said frame, a table top having a combined pivotal and slidable mounting on said guide rods and adapted to be swung outward from the top part of said frame, and means for supporting said inverted U-shaped frame in adjusted positions.

9. In an extension table, a base, an inverted U-shaped frame having its side members slidably mounted in said base, parallel guide rods mounted in said U-shaped frame and spaced from the side members thereof, a notched rod secured at its upper end centrally of the top part of said U-frame, guide means carried y said base for guiding the lower free end of said notched rod, manually operable latch means co-operating with said notched rod, and a table top having a combined pivotal and sliiable mounting at one end on said guide ro s.

10. In an extension table, a cabinet, a frame adapted to be housed in said cabinet and extensible therefrom, support members slidably mounted on said extensible frame, a table top mounted on said support members, and a pivotal joint interposed between said table top and support members, whereby said table top may be housed 'in the cabinet alongside said frame or may be extended relative thereto and turned laterally therefrom on its pivotal joint, and'means for supportingsaid extensible frame in various extended positions.

11. In an extension table, a cabinet, a frame adapted to be housed in said cabinet and vertically extensible therefrom, a table top having means pivotally connected therewith and vertically adjustable on said frame whereby the table may be raised or lowered relative thereto to remove it from or return it to the said cabinet, said table top when returned to the cabinet occupying a position at one side of said extensible frame, the pivotal connection of said table with said vertically slidable means permitting it to be swung over said frame and to extend to the opposite side of the frame, and means for supporting said extensible frame at various heights.
