Description

i A. L. MARKEY & L. W. SIMMONS.
GBATERS. No. 185,184. Patented Dec.12,1 876 THE GRAPHIC (IO-FLY UN TED STATES 'rn'r OFFIon.
ADAM L. MARKEY AND LACY W. SIMMONS, OF DARBYVILLE, FLORIDA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,184, dated December 12, 1876; application filed June 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, A. L. MARKEY and L. W. SIMMONS, of Darbyville, in the county of Baker and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Graters,
. which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement, hereinafter more specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure l of accompanying drawing is a central vertical section of our improved grater, and Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A designates the large case or box which constitutes the main frame of our machine. This box is provided with a hinged cover, 0, which has a hopper, K, and a hook or catch, M, so that it may be fastened to the said box firmly, or may be thrown back, so as to give easy access to the interior of the box. This box is, furthermore, provided at its bottom with a drawer, 0, above which is placed the rake H. A large grating-cylinder, B, is journaled, by a shaft, 1, in the said case, just be low the lower mouth of the hopper K, and the opposite ends of its shaft project through the case far enough to receive a crank and a gear-wheel, E. This small box or case 0 is attached to the large case A, said small box being provided with a small grating-cylinder, b, having a shaft, 4', and with a hopper, k.
The small cylinder b is revolved by means of a small gear-wheel attached to the inner end of its shaft, which meshes with the wheel E. A lever, G, pivoted to an upright attached to the rear of the case 0, has two arms, g g, on its under side, which, respectively, bear the followers D d.
The operation is as follows: The nutmegs or other articles to be grated are placed in the hoppers K it, the cylinders are revolved, and a slight pressure applied to the top of the material to be grated by means of the lever G and followers D d. The grated particles fall into the drawers below the cylinders; but if the particles are too coarse they are caught by the rake H, and are thus held from the bottom.
We claim as our invention 1. The herein'described grater, consisting of boxes A 0, having grating-cylinders B b and hoppers K k, the lever Gr having depending arms g g, to which are attached the followers D d and the rake H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The lever G, to which are attached the followers D d, in combination with the cylin- B 12, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. a
A. L. MARKEY. L. W. SIMMONS.
