B J. BECK.
BILL FILES. v No. 185,066. Patented Dec. 5, 1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIGE. A
BERNARD J. BEoK, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BlLL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,066, dated December 5, 1876; application filed" October 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD J. BECK, 0 Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Files for Letters, Invoices, 850., of which the following is a specification:
Invoice and letter files have been made of adhesive strips of paper, secured to the back and between the covers, so that when the letter or in voice is moistened and placed against the adhesive strip the letter or invoice will be held in the tile. I
In some instances the adhesive strip is folded and sewed like the back of a book, and the adhesive material being applied to opposite surfaces, so that when folded the adhesive material will be upon the proper surfaces.
This operation is expensive, as considerable labor is involved in properly applying the gum and folding the strip.
My invention consists in an improvement in the method of making the adhesive strips that receive and secure the letter .or invoice at one edge and retain it within the covers.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a section of the paper-tile, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view representing the adhesive strips.
Sheets of paper suitable for the adhesive strips are covered with mucilage or suitable adhesive material upon one side. After they are dry they are laid together in the proper number for forming sections, and cut up into strips of the proper length and width. This plan avoids counting the strips and lessens the expense, but the strips may be counted after they are cut up. v
- The proper number of adhesive stripsa, laid together to form a section, are sewed together by a line of stitching near the back edge, as
illustrated in Fig. 2, and it is preferable to also glue the back edges of the strips forming the section, and also to saw notches into them for the back cords of the book. as at b.
In placing the sections together to form the file or adhesive binder it is necessary to use filling strips or guards, asat d, between the sections, the same as ordinarily used in letter-.
ing in one direction secure the letters, in-
voices, or bills in the usual manner after the back of the sheet is moistened near the inner edge and inserted between the strips to.
By this mode of manufacture a great saving is etfected in the labor required, because the sections do not require to be cut or trimmed after they are put together, and the labor of' folding and counting is avoided.
I claim as my invention The adhesive sections for the invoice or letter file made of strips sewed together at the back edge by a line of stitching, and connected together and to the intermediate fillingstrips, in the manner specified.
Signed by me this 6th day of October, 1876.
BERNARD J. BECK.
