BUILDING IRON Filed Oct. 28, 1929 mil/EJ117072 A TTO R1175) Patented Mar. 8, 1932 UNITED STATES MANUEL .r. MEnEmos, on sA-N osE, onmronnm BUILDING anon Application filed October 2s, 1e29..seria1 1493,0125
This invention relates to an iron used in building up the wax mold usedin the vformation of electrotype plates.
In the performance of this work it'is cus- Llj tomary to use a pointed hot iron against the surface of which the wax is melted ,as the Qmanlpulationof the valve 9.
tool is moved over therwork. r I 1 This method of working is highlyobjectionable because it requires the useof both hands at all times, and it is extremely difli-V- cult to follow a given line accurately and at -the same time to secure an even flow of melted wax over the point of the iron. Furthermore in this method -of working the heated wax may spatter and so disfigure the mold as to necessitate the making of'a new one.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a means whereby the wax may be prepared and held in readiness in a sultable liquid condition, and fed on to the point of the iron at such times and in such quan:
' tities as the operator 1 may desire, thereby eliminating the difiiculties above referred to;
The drawing is a side elevation of one embodiment of my invention, part broken away and part in section.
In this embodiment of my invention the pointed iron 1 is provided with an upstanding annular flange 2 to form a pocket 3, this flange being exteriorly threaded as at it. In order to increase the capacity of the pocket 3 a member 5 is threaded thereon as shown. Upon the iron 1 is mounted a handle 6.
At 7 I show an outletport formed in the flange 2 at the base of the pocket 3, the port beingformed with a seatat .8. Ont-heseat 8 issea-ted a valve 9'normally held in a closed and against a bearing member 11 in which is actuated to an open positionby means of a lever 12 pivotally mounted on. the, handle ing a head 14 on valve 9 and its longer arm extending outwardlylasat 15 adjacent the grip of the handle 6.
In "ts practical application a quantity of wax is placed in the ocket 3 where it is '11. In a'tool of the type set forth, a receptacle forfcontaining a supply of'wax, an ele- .,ment having its lower portion formed to deposit fluid wax'upon a given surface, and 4 extending outwardly therefrom at an angle,
position by a spring 10 bearing thereagainst' j 1 as at 13 and having its shorter-arm engag-l ment having a pocket at its top and having crease the capacity thereof, and a valve conheated'iron 1, the'saidiron beingheated a any suitable manner asby' gasf jets fed 7 through pipes as at16. Asthe "point nof the" tool is moved "over'the work the liquid wa-x' is allowed 'to feed down over the point of the heated iron' in'ja y desirable quantityby It'is-to b" understoo d,"of course, that while 1 I have herein shown and described but one specific embodiment of the invention, changes 60 in form, construction and method of assembly and operation may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
'I, claim: 1
means for heating the receptacle, said lower 7 portion of the element being closed 'on' all of its sides and its lower end and having its op posite end connected to the receptacle, and said receptacle having a valve controlled vdischarge portfor permitting the heated wax to egress therethrough in predetermined 1- 5 quantities and to flow downwardly over the exterior of the lower portion of the element to the given surface.
2. In a tool of the type set forth, a receptacle for containing asupply' of,wax,an ele ment having a lower portion closed on all sides and ends connected to the receptacle and formed to deposit fluid wax upon a given sur-' face, a handle connected to the receptacle and means for heating the element, said recep-V tacle having a discharge port, a spring pressed 1 V slidable valve carried by theihandlefor controlling said discharge port sothat melted" wax may egress from the receptacleand flow downwardly over the exterior of the element I to the given surface, andmea-ns to operate the valve carried by the handle;
3.'In a tool of the typeset forth, an-ele a lower portion formed to deposit wax upon a given surface, said lower portion of the ele-* ment being c'losedon all sides and both ends, a receptacle connected to the'pocket to in trolled discharge port extending through the pocket and above the upper end of said lower portion of the element so that melted wax may egress from the pocket and flow down wardly over the exterior of the element to the given surface.
4. In a tool of the type set forth, a receptacle for containing a supply of wax, an element connected to the receptacle and having a. lower portion closed on all sides and'e'nds and formed to deposit flui'dwax'uponra given 3 surface, a movable support for the receptacle connected thereto, means for heating the element and receptacle from the exterior thereof, said receptacle havingavalve controlled discharge port located above the lower por tion of the element so'that melted waxmay egress from the receptacle in. predetermined quantities and How downwardly over the exterior of the element to the given surface, and a valve disposed exteriorly of the receptacle for controlling the port thereof. 7 H
