Description

E. H. GROVER.
MUCILAGE HOLDER.
Patenfled Nov.28.18' 76.
m.1a4,77e.
PATENT OFFICE I ELBRIDGE H. GROVEB, OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS.
-IMPROVEMENT IN NlUCILAGE-HOLDERS.
Speeifieation forming part of Letters Patent N0. l 84.776, dated November 28, 1876; appli cation flled September 11, 1876. i
T0 all whom z't may concern: 4
B'e it known that I, ELBRIDGE H. GROVER, 0f Bostou, inthe eounty 01 Suffolk and State of Massachuse'tts, have invented a flexible distributer f0r mneil'age and ink holders, 0f which the following is a t'ull, clear, and 6xael; deseription, refereneebeing had 130 theaccornpan'ying rrawings, making part of thi spaification, in which-'- Fignre 1 is a perspective view of a mueil- Zuge-holder, having my flexible distributer applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertieal section through the eenter 0f the same. Fig. 3 is a perspeetive view of n1y flexible distributef, t0 be applied to a receptaele f0r comtainiug ink, the form 0f the point of thedis-.
tributer being such as 130 adapt it f0r use as a substitute for a. marking-brush. Fig. 4 is a vertical eentral seetion through the Same.
My inventiou eonsists in a. peculiar nonstruetion 0f a pert'orated flexible distributer, tu be applied to a receptaele f0r contaiuing muuilage 01 ink, whieh is evenlydistributed upon Elle s urface required, by a. slight pressure thereon, t-he distributer thus serving es a substitute for either the ordinary mucilage 013 mzwkiug brusb.
T0 enzmble others skilled"in the art 1:0 anderstand und use my invention, I will 'proceed 130 deseribe Ll1e manner in wbich I have carried In the seid dmwings, A represents a bottle for holding mucilage, over the neck of which is sprang the base of a rubber or other suitable flexible distributer, B, .the top of which is bevelecl oft ab a a 011 two of its opposite sides, and is provided with a series 0f small apartures, b, extending horizontally across it in proximity to its upper edge, tbrough which the liquid contenta of the bottle may be ejected npou 1:he surface desired, when 0ne of the beveled perforated sides a is brought into contact therewi'th and pressed thereon.
By .this eonstruetion the mueilage is allowed to esezupe through tl1e perforations 011 the beveled side, and the solid tip following serves to spread the mu cilage as it passes, so that the operation of gumming is performed at a single operation 0f the band.
Within the distributer, at its upper end, is placed a pieee of sponge, c, for regulating the flow of ehe liquid, and preventing its t00 rapid eseape, the sponge being prevented from becoming displaced. and dropping down into the mouth 0f the bottle by a flange, d, a. chamher, e, for the sponge being thus formed. G
is a metallic cap 01 cover, which fits over the distributer B, andrests 0n a flange 01 shoulder, h, extending around the neek of the bottle, this cap serving to protect the distributer from dusc, which would otherwis6 collect thereon and close the apertures b, and thus obstrut the fiow of the liquid in the bottle.
Should, however, these apertures be temporarily closed, the mucilage therein can be readily removed by simply pressing one of the beveled sides a 0f the distributer 011 any hard surfaee.
When constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, my improved distributer performs the office of a mucilage-brush; bat by making the distributer in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, with conugated 01 grooved exterior surfaces, provided with perforations i, and inclining to a point, and of polygonal or other forrn in cross-seetion, it serves as a, valuable substitute for a marking-brush when applied to a receptacle er pot containing ink.
What I claim as my inve1ition, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The perfomted flexible distributer B, having a closed 01 solid point, and perforated on the sides below the point, t0 be applied. t0 mueilage and ink holders, substantially as anti for the purpose described.
Witness my band thie 5th day of Septemher, 1876.
ELBRIDGE H. GBOVEB.
