Description
Feb. 23, 1932. A. A. GUERRAl v i HAND BLOTTING APPLIANCE Filed Oct .22, 1930 Patented Feb. 23, 1932 .Y
UNITED STATES .ALBERT .AUGUSTUS GUERRA, F LONDON, ENGLAND HAND BLOTTING nrrLrANcE Application filed October 22, 1930, Serial No. 480,512, and in Great Britain November r15, 1929.
This invention has reference to hand blotting appliances wherein a surface of blotting paper or similar material is mounted on a rigid base which is usually of semi-circular or other curved shape to facilitate use of the blotting surface in a rocking manner.
The object of the present invention is to enable quick replenishment of the blotting surface. Another object is to construct a c blotting appliance wherein a hollow casing is adapted to contain a supply of blotting material in the form of a movable strip passing out of the casing and over an operative face thereof7 and then again entering the casing.
i5 A further object is to provide means for moving the strip over the operative face as and when required. A still further object is the provision of means in a blotting appliance of the type described whereby fresh spools of blotting paper or equivalent may be readily inserted in position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a casing in which a strip of blotting material is mounted on a roller or spool and passes out of the casing over an operative surface which may be flat or curved, thence back into the casing on to a take-up roller or spool, means being provided to rotate one or both rollers or spools preferably from the exterior.
The invention may be more particularly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a perspective view of an apparatus made in accordance with the invention the lid being shown removed from the casing and inverted.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical cross section through the apparatus Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through one 0E the spools or rollers 0 Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the spindle fitting f Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the complete apparatus.
Referring to the figures, in a preferred form I construct a casing C having side members 0 which are connected by a curved member c which forms or is the basis for the operative face of the blotting apparatus. A lid Z is attached by means of its knob and the screw pin s carried on a bridge piece s Xed between the side members. Carried in the side members and readily revoluble are two spindles Z l upon which may be carried 55 spools or rollers r r adapted to carry rolls b 2') of blotting paper or any similar blotting material. One or both the spindles may be operated from without the casing by means of a knob such as c or by a lever or any other well known device.
The curved member c terminates in rolled edges 0 at points slightly below the lid Z.
In'operation a strip Z5' of blotting material 65 of any desired kind is wound on to one of the spindles such as r and passes thence over the rolled edge of the member c along the operative face of same as shown in Fig. 2 and over theopposite rolled edge on to the roller 7". By turning the knob of either spindle the blotting material may be unwound olf one roller and wound on to the opposite roller and by the winding process the blotting surface may be constantly renewed.
Springs Z Z attached preferably to thc lid press down upon the rolled edge of the curved member and form with this edge a slot through which the blotting strip may pass, the function of these springs being to create so sufficient friction on the moving strip to maintain it taut along the operative surface. The same result may be obtained by the application of any convenient friction device applied to any convenient part of the roller or spindle. If desired a ratchet may be fixed to either or both the spindles so that they will only be movable in one desired direction.
The spindles are preferably hollow and are fitted at the ends with spring operated ball im catches t which are adapted to spring into engagement with the recesses t in the side members and thereby retain the spindle in its place. Where the spindle is fitted with an operating knob this is preferably carried on a rod e which passes through the hollow spindle and is screwed into the end thereof as shown at e. The spindles preferably run in ball bearings e carried in the side members of the casing.
The spool or roller is operatively connected to the spindle by means of pins p p xed in the spindle and taking into longitudinal slots p p in the end of the spool or roller.
It Will be understood that the above de` scription of details of construction represents a preferred form of the invention such as has been found convenient in practice and that the invention is not coniined to such details of construction but that these may take a variety of forms vvithin the scope of the invention.
I-Iaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is l. A device of the character described comprising a casing inclusive of side Walls and a curved bottom Wall, the ends of the bottom Wall being rolled upon themselves, rolls Within said casing, a strip extending across the o bottom Wall of the casing and over the rolled ends thereof into the casing and Wound at its ends on said rolls, whereby dierent portions thereof are adapted to be exposed for use by unwinding the strip from one roll onto the other, a cover for the top of the casing, means for fastening the cover to the casing, and resilient means carried by the cover for cooperation With the rolled ends of the bottom Wall of the casing to hold taut that portion of the strip which extends across the bottom Wall of the casing.
2. A device as set forth in claim l in Which the cover carried resilient means comprises for cooperation with each of the rolled ends of the casing bottom Wall a resiliently mounted transversely curved bar of substantially equal length to the Width of the bottom Wall overlying the related bottom Wall rolled end in parallel relation thereto and With the convex side of the bar facing the rolled end.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ALBERT AUGUSTUS GUERRA.
