O BRIEN, OF ENG-LEWOOD, NEW JERSEY CABINET Application filed. November 29, 1930. Serial No. 498,968.
This invention relates to improvements in cabinets.
One of the objects of this invention is to produce a cabinet, which is providedwith a pivoted closure element or section capable of being pivotally swung outwardly from the part of the cabinet on which it is mounted and preferably providing a writing surface or desk and another sliding closure section or element comprising a sliding panel portion of said cabinet and having a sliding connection with said pivotally-swinging section so as to be carried by said pivotally-swinging section in its pivotal or extension movement 5 and also to have a sliding connection with the cabinet for the purpose of closing a section of said cabinet, said parts being so arranged as to cause an automatic locking in closed position of the pivotally-swinging section when the sliding section is moved into closed position. i
Still another object of my invention is to mount upon the inner surface of-said pivoted element a drawer so as to cause the cabinet,
when the pivoted element is opened up, to have all the appearance of a permanent, stable and ornamental desk.
Still another object of my invention is to provide, in combination with a pivoted extensible element of the type described, leg members pivoted to the extensible element and arranged to drop automatically upon the outward swinging of the pivoted element and also to provide a plurality of foot members so connected together as to be movable simultaneously when either one or the other of the two members are actuated to fold.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to co-act and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation, in closed position, of a cabinet embodying my invention;,
Fig. 2 is a similar front elevation of the cabinet shown in Fig. 1 with the sliding panel in open position;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the cabinet shown in Figs. 1 and 2 when my pivoted element is swung into open position;
Fig. 4 is a side or end elevation of the cabinet shown in Fig. 3 with the pivoted member in extended position;
Fig. 5 is a View, in side elevation, of the pivoted member removed from the cabinet;
Fig. 6 is a view, in front elevation, of the legs or feet folded preparatory to folding the pivoted member;
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 77 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 8 is a sect-ion on the line 88 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 9 is a section on the line 99 of F ig. 8, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 10 is an enlarged view, in front elevation, partially broken away, of the pivotal connection of the pivoted member with the frame of the cabinet at adjacent parts.
Referring now to these drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, my improved cabinet comprises a body portion 1 which, as shown particularly in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, is composed of an oblong box-like structure comprising side wall members 11, 11, a top member 12, a bottom member 13, a back panel 1 1 and an intermediate inside shelf and bracing member 15 which divides the cabinet into two compartments 1', 1 The said box-like body portion is provided at the bottom of its forward side with a fixed panel member 16 and, in the embodiment shown, is open above said panel member to the top thereof and this opening is closed by a pivoted extension closure member 2 and a slidable closure member 5. Said pivoted closure member 2, as shown, is provided with pivot elements 3 mounted upon inward extensions 3 and pivoted in the sleeves 4t which are inserted in the side members 11, 11, a sufficient distance from the front surface of the cabinet to compensate for the thickness of a stop head 5 at the upper edge of the slidable closure panel 5 which, as shown, is slidably mounted in a groove 2 within the pivoted member 2 and is adapted to he slid or moved upwardly to provide a closure for the upper compartment 1 and to be moved into closed position along the ways 6, G and when so moved along such ways, to have an extension portion 5 within the groove 2 and thus to cause a locking of the pivoted member 2 in its folded and closed position.
In the embodiment of my invention shown, the folding pivoted member 2 comprises a front member 2, an intermediate or spacing member 2 and a rear member 2, the front member 2 and rear member 2 being spaced apart by the intermediate member so as to form the groove 2 within which the slidable member 5 moves.
In said preferred embodiment of my invention, I also preferably mount on the rear of the pivoted member 2 a sliding drawer 7 which is preferably mounted to slide in a box 7.
In said preferred embodiment of my invention, I also preferably provide quick acting means for holding the pivoted or swinging member in extended position and, as illustrated, foldable leg members 8 and 9 are provided with lever mechanism arranged to cause a simultaneous folding of both legs upon the movement of one of the same and also having a connection with the frame of the cabinet and so arranged as to cause an automatic opening of the foldable legs upon the outward extension of the pivoted or swinging member, thus providing a construction in which a mere upward swin ing movement of the pivoted member into fully extended position will cause the legs to be automatically moved into supporting position for said extension swinging member.
In the preferred form of my invention illustrated, the leg members 8 and 9 are hinged by h nges 8, 9 to the edges of the bottom member of the drawer box 7. As illustrated, one of said leg members is pivotally con nected by a pair of toggle levers 20, 21 with the inner edge of the drawer. As illustrated, one member 20 of said pair of levers 20, 21 is at one end pivotally connected at 20 to the leg member, the other lever being likewise at one end pivotally connected at 21' to the drawer casing or box and the opposite ends of said two members being pivotally connected together to provide a folding arrangement thereof. The other leg member is, in the embodiment shown, provided w th a crank lever or arm 22 fixedly connected at 22 and having through the connecting lever 23 a pivotal connection with said levers 20, 21 adjacent to the pivotal connection therebetween. As illustrated. the crank lever 22 is provided with a slot 22 in which a pin 23 on the connecting lever 23 is adapted to move. Thus after the pin in its lower position has made a connection which will actuate the levers 20, 21 to cause the folding of the leg member 9, the slot will permit movement of the crank arm relative to the end of the lever 23 in order to enable the complete and facile folding of the leg member 9.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, the inward projections or extensions 8 for the pivot 3 are preferably provided on metallic plates 7 which, as more particularly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, will form side portions of the drawer boX or casing 7.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention. I also provide a finger notch 24 in the fixed panel 16 so as to permit a ready gripping of the lower edge of the swinging extension member 2 and also provide a knob 25 on the head 5 of the sl ding panel to enable ready engagement by the hand of the user of the panel and a movement thereof into closed or open position, as desired. Also, in the preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide suitable means for frictionally retaning the sliding panel in its uppermost position and, as illustrated, this is accomplished by mounting in a spring socket 26 spring 26 which is adapted to engage and force outwardly a ball 27 toward and particularly through a restricted opening so that a surface of said wall will frictionally engage and interlock with a metallic socket 28 formed in one or both of the way members 6. 6.
The operation of the device will be substantially obvious from the above description. it being only necessary to say that, assuming the parts to be in the closed position shown in Fig. 1, a user may grasp the knob 25 and by exerting slight pressure to overcome the locking engagement between the ball 27 and socket 28, move the panel downwardly into the groove 2. When the parts are in this posit on, the swinging extension member may be grasped by engagement of the fingers through the notch 24 and this extension member lifted or swung upwardly, whereupon the legs will automatically move downwardly into supporting position for said swinging extension member and in this position it will be noted that the edges 8 9 which are suitably reinforced by moldings, will abut against the inset way elements 6. 6 of the cabinet and thus, in connection with the contact of the lower portion of the leg members on the ground, provide a double support for the swinging extension member.
When it is desired to close the cabinet. the leg members are, as hereinabove indicated. folded simultaneously by the the movement of one of the same into folded position, whereupon the swinging extension member may be dropped into closed position. As shown. the leg member 9 may be enga ed and moved upwardly about its hinges. This will cause a simul aneous closing of the other leg member 8 whereupon the swinging extension member 2 may then be swung or dropped, as aforesaid, into closed position. hen tie swinging member is so moved into closed position, the sliding panel member 5 may then be slid upwardly to completely close the cab inet and also, more particularly, simultaneously and automatically to lock the extension swinging member in its closed position, said swinging member being retained in such closed position because the extended lower end of the sliding member never leaves the groove 2 of the swinging member during the closing movement of the sliding member. The swinging member will thus be locked until the sliidng panel is again slid down into the groove 2.
It will be seen from the above that I have provided a cabinet construction having a plurality of compartments, one of which is closed by a swinging extension member adapted to form a desk or the like and the other of which is closed by a sliding panel which, in its closing movement, automatically locks the swinging extension member in its closed position; also that I provide a construction in which the slide member is carried by the swinging member; that the swinging member is pivoted at the inner side of the sliding member so that in closed position thesliding member moves between the outer surface element 2* and the pivots; that the projections on which the pivots are mounted project a sufficient distance beyond the pivoted edge of the swinging member to compensate or provide a space in extended position for the thickness of a stop bead of the sliding member, and that said stop bead 5 is preferably arranged so that its top surface will be flush with the outer surface of the extension swinging memher and with the upper surface of the shelf when the parts are in extended position. Said top surface of the bead will also preferably be provided with the knob 25 engage able by the fingers to slide the panel into open and closed position, as desired.
Having described my invention, I claim 1.
