This invention relates to pipe fittings, and more particularly to an extractor fitting or device especially designed for use in connection with a pump and tank installation for handling liquids, for example, gasoline, although my invention may be employed for other purposes.
In installations of the character specified,
a tank is positioned below the ground level and has a connection through a suction line to a pump conveniently located on the ground surface. The end of the suction line adjacent the tank is in communication with the interior of the tank by means of a tube or pipe or suction line extension having on its lower end a foot-valve.
In many instances, the tank and its communications with the pump are placed in excavations formedin the ground, after which the excavations are filled in, completelycovering the apparatus. In some cases, a costly man-hole is constructed leading from the ground level to the top of the tank in proximity to the point of connection of the'suction line and the tank, for the purpose of enabling workmen to reach the connections in order to remove the suction line extension located in the tank and the foot-valve car ried on the lower end of thesaid extension.
Both of these methods of construction are expensive and, in addition thereto, the installations are unsatisfactory, due to the time and labor involved in applying and removing the foot-valves. In-the operation of these installations, it is frequently necessary to re-' the line; prevent leakage of liquid from the line and the admission of air into the line.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be hereinafter pointed out or become apparent from a consideration of the specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring to'the drawings, 5 designates a pump and 6 a tank of a pump and tank in stallation of a gasoline station, and 7 a suction line leading from the tank to the pump. Located within the tank is a tube or pipe 8, said pipe being provided at its lower end with the usual foot-valve indicatedrby the numeral 9. 1O designates a vent pipe leading from the interior of thetank to a point above the ground level 11. The construction or installation just described is of theusual and well known character.
My invention contemplates the employment of means adapted to be'used in connection with the tank, suction line, suction line extension within the tank and the pump of an installation as specified, whereby simple and efficient means are provided for effecting a removal of the section of the suction line within the tank, together with the foot-valve carried on the end of said section, and without breaking any line joints.
These means, as illustrated and as preferred, include an extractor fitting designated generally by the numeral 12. This fitting comprises a hollow open ended body member 13 designed to be mounted adjacent the tank 6 on the upper screw threaded end 14 of a pipe sleeve 15; sleeve 15 being fixedly secured to the tank over its outlet opening, as shown by the diagrammatic view Fig. 5, functions to support the fitting in the desired operative position. The body of the fitting is formed with an upper annular opening 16, a lower opening 17 disposed in line with opening 16 but being of smaller diameter than opening 16, and with a right angle pipe receiving opening 18. The walls of the opening 16, 17 and 18 are interiorly threaded, as particularly shown by Fig. 2, to cooperate with exteriorly threaded parts. Thus, the threaded wall of opening 17 is designed to receive the threaded end let or pipe sleeve 15 and the threads of opening 18 to receive and engage a threaded end of a pipe section a of the suction line 7. The body member 13 of the fitting is further formed with an upper annular machined seat 19 and with a lower seat 20.
In addition to the body member, the extractor fitting comprises a removable member or diaphragm 21 adapted to be inserted into and removed from the body member in the operation of applying and removing the tube pipe section or suction line extension 8 and its foot-valve 9. The removable member 21 preferably comprises a single piece casting and includes an upper head portion 22 exteriorly threaded at 23 for the purpose of engaging the threaded wall of opening 16 of the body member, an annular seat 24 adapted for cooperation with seat 19 of body 13, and an extension terminal 25 formed with lugs 26, the latter being designed to be engaged by the lugs 27 of a manipulating tool Below the head portion 22 and interposed between the said portion and a base portion 29, the removable member is formed with a plurality of vertically extending openings 30 designed to provide a free passage for liquids from pipe section 8 to the section a of the suction line 7. The base or bottom portion is formed with a central threaded opening 31 to receive the threaded end 32 01 the tube or pipe 8, and with a seat 33 designed to cooperate with the seat 20 of the body. 34; and 35 designate gaskets employed in connection with the joints of the two members, i. e., the fixed body member and the removable member 21.
In some cases, it is desirable to employ a retaining wall or member unconnected with the fitting, to prevent caving of the ground and allow access to the removable member of the fitting, so that the manipulating tool may be used. Such a wall or member may comprise a pipe 36.
It will be noted that the fitting provides simple and efiicient means for joining the suction line proper with its extension or pipe located in the tank and that it also provides a construction that may be utilized for readily removing and applying the pipe section 8 and its foot-valve 9 without disconnecting the suction line from the fitting and without breaking joints. The removal and application of the said pipe section may be eflected by the use of a proper tool adapted for engagement with lugs 26 of the diaphragm or removable member of the fitting, said tool being operable from the ground level and thus enabling the removal of the desired parts with a minimum of labor and time.
I claim:
1. A fitting of the character described including a hollow body member having alined openings, a removable tube supporting mem ber entered in the body member and having fluid passages formed therein, a depending tube carried by the removable member, said removable member removable from the body for eflecting a withdrawal of the said tube through the said alined openings, cooperating fluid sealing means on the removable member and the body, said body internally threaded at its lower end for engagement with a tubular member, said tube supporting member including an integral seating head and an integral seating base portion, and having said fluid passages formed therebetween.
'2. A fitting of the character described including a hollow body member having alined openings, an opening disposed at a right angle to the alined openings, a pipe entered in the right angle opening, a ported removable tube supporting member entered in the body member including an integral seating head and an integral seating base portion, a tube carried by the body member, said removable member removable from the body for effecting a withdrawal oi" the said tube through the alined openings, and cooperating fluid sealing means on the removable member and the body disposed above and below the right angle opening and between the head and the base portions and the body.
3. A fitting of the character described including a hollow body member having alined openings and a right angle opening, a ported diaphragm having an integral seating head and an integral seatingbase portion removably secured in the hollow body, said diaphragm and body having cooperating fluid sealing means disposed above and below the right angle opening and contacting with the head and base portions.
4:. A fitting of the character described including a hollow body member having alined openings and a right angle opening, a ported diaphragm having an integral seating head and an integral seating base portion removably secured in the hollow body, said body and diaphragm having cooperating threaded portions for connecting said members and fluid sealing means above and below the right angle opening and contacting with the head and base portions.
5. A fitting of the character described including a hollow body member having alined openings and a right angle opening, a ported diaphragm removably secured in the hollow body, a depending tube carried by the diaphragm, said body and diaphragm having cooperating threaded portions for connecting said members, and cooperating means for preventing leakage therebetween including ground seats and packing elements, said body interiorly threaded at its lower end for engagement with a tubular member.
