In the filling of gasoline tanks on motor vehicles, it is common to remove the cap from the top of the tank and then to insert a. hose into the tank through which the gasoline flows through the pump. It often occurs that the hose will slip and consequently a large amount of gasoline is spilled, which means a loss and also increases the fire hazard. With my device a peculiarly arranged showing the manner in which my hose con cap is securedto the tank and becomes permanent' fiXt-ure'thereon,:toxwhich the. hose? is connected tlrrough the medium" of. a bayonet connection.
1111 the, accompanying drawings wherein'for the'purpose off illustrationi's shown a pre ferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates any standard tank having a customary threaded nipple 6 to which it is common to secure the cap. Instead of employing an ordinary cap, I employ a peculiarly shaped cap 7 having a threaded portion 8 which engages the nipple 6. This cap is provided with a reduced portion 8 which is interiorly threaded as at 9. An inlet opening is shown at 11 which communicates with a chamber 12 in which is placed a ball 13 held against a seat 14 by a spring 16. This seat is formed in a tubular member 17 which is threaded so as to engage the threads 9 and has a reduced end 18 projecting from which are pins 19. These pins are adapted to enter bayonet slots 21 formed in a connection 22 secured to a. coupling member 23. This coupling member is tubular in form and has a chamber 24 adapted to house a spring 26 which presses against a parking ring 27 carrying a packing 28 and against the head 29 of a tubular element 31 to which the filling hose 32 is attached. At 33 I have shown a bleeder tube in which a ball check 34: is positioned.
In operation, my cap is attached to a tank and the hose is connected to the pipe 31. By now bringing the two together so that the pins 19 enter the bayonet slots 21 it will be evident that the member 18 will be brought into contact with thepacking 28 thus effecting a seal between the two parts. As the gasoline flows as indicated in the tailed arrows, the same will enter pass the ball check and into the tank while the air within the tank will pass out through the bleeder as indicated in the plain arrows.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a device of the character described the combination With a gas tank and a hose for filling the tank, of a filler cap having an open end adapted to be secured to the tank and provided with an opposite Walled end having an upper and lower vent opening therein, a relief valve secured to the Walled end adjacent the upper vent opening, a valve housing secured to the Walled end adjacent the lower vent opening and communicating therethru with the filler cap, a coupling element for retaining the hose, and cooperating means carried by said valve housing and coupling for relnovably securing the coupling to said housing.
