Description

Jan. 19, 1932. H. TuEckMA NTEL 1,841,508
BAG FRAME LATCH Filed Sept. 28, 1929 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 19, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HUGO TUECKMANTECL, F NEWARK,,NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE '1. 80 L. 00. ING.,OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPQRATION OF NEW JERSEY BAG FRAME LATCH Application filed September 28, 1929. Serial No. 395,764.
This invention relates to latches for traveling bags, and more particularly to a latch adapted to cooperate with a strap for securely holding a bag in closed condition.
The usual traveling bag is provided w th latches adjacent the ends of the bag, which latches are often inconvenient to manipulate, and involve an unnecessarily complicated structure for the purpose they serve. The
bag is also provided with straps for assisting the latches in holding the bag in a closed condition. The ordinary procedure, therefore, in opening such aba g, is to unbuckle the strap and pass the free end through one or more loops, and then manipulate the metal latches provided.
It is an object of this invention to facilitate the opening and closing of traveling bags by providing a latch of simple structure which I 29 is provided with upstanding flanges for guiding a holding strap, and which is substan tially concealed by the strap when the bag is in closed condition.
A further object is the provision of a bag latch of simple structure which may be easily attached to a bag frame, and which may be conveniently manipulated.
These and other advantages, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention applied to a traveling bag.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view showing details of the latching device.
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the latch.
Referring to the drawings, a bag is shown to have overlapping angle frame numbers t and 5. To the horizontal upper surface of angle l is attached a metal plate 6 by means of integral prongs 7 which pass through slots in angle 4. and are bent flush with the inner surface of the angle 4, as shown in Figure 2. Projecting from the center of plate 6 is a pin 8, which serves the purpose hereinafter described.
Attached to the vertical side of angle 5 is a plate 9,-having hingedlyconnected thereto an extension 10 of a vertical flange 11, integral with a guide plate 12, the latter having upturned end flanges 13. The guide plate 12 is provided with an aperture 14 adapted to coi5 operate with pin 8 to latch the two frame members 4: and 5. The plate 12 is also provided with a slightly downturned projection 15 to facilitate its manipulation.
In operation, the angles 4 and 5 are caused to overlap, thus closing the bag, and the plate 12 is moved to a horizontal position so that pin 8 enters the aperture 14, thus latching the angles 4. and 5 together.
A strap 16, such as is commonly provided with bags of the type disclosed, is passed between the flanges 13 and secured to a buckle on the side of the bag.
From the above description it will be seen that the strap substantially conceals the latch, and. the flanges 13 at the same time act as guides for the strap. The appearance of the bag is enhanced, and the manipulation of inconvenient latches such as heretofore has been provided on bags is dispensed with.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
In combination with a bag having overlapping angle members, a latch comprising a plate fixed to the horizontal side of the outer member, a pin projecting from said plate, a second plate fixed to the vertical side of the inner angle member, a guide plate hingedly connected to the second plate, said guide plate having an aperture adapted to cooperate with the pin to hold the angle members together, I
and integral upturned flanges on said guide plate adapted to guide a strap.
This specification signed this 27th day of September, 1929.
' HUGO TUECKMANTEL.
