This inventionrelates to a knitting machine attachment which is especially for use on circularv hosiery knitting machines of the Banner type, such as the machine foriningthe '5 subject matter of United States Patent No. 1,450,946, issued on April 10, 1931 to lAugustin Gagne, and which are equipped with a drop stitch attachment, and the invention hasfor one of itsimportant objects-tov provide, in
a'manner as hereinafter .set forth, an attachment-for knitting machines which is actuated by said knitting machines and which is operatively connected to the drop stitch attachment for actuating the same in a manner to provide a knitted fabric having one or more crochet stitchesrunning longitudinally therein, thus materially adding to thefattractiveness and desirability of the fabric.
Y Otherobjects of the invention are to pro- Z'Ovide .a knitting machine attachment ofthe character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, eiiicient andreliable in operation, which may be manufactured at low cost and installed for operation on a conventional knitting machine without the necessity of materially altering said machine structurally.
' VAll of the foregoing and still further obl jects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the followingspecilication, taken in connection with` the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and lwherein l Figure lis Va perspective view showing an attachment in accordance with this invention mounted in position on a knitting machine, said knitting machine being shown in broken lines.
FigureQ is a view in perspective showing the device :removed from Vthe knittingA machine.
Figures 3 to 8, inclusive,- are views showing different samples of work which may be produced through thefmedium of an attachment in accordance with this invention on a knitting machine. Referringto the. drawings in detail, it will o Abe. seen that the Vreferencel numeral 1 desig- Seral No. 518,207.
nates an elongated, substantially cylindrical drum having a longitudinal socket 2 extending thereinto from one end thereoffor the reception of the end portion of an oscillating shaft (not shown) oft-he knitting machine which is indicated in broken lines in Figure 1 and designated by the reference numeral 3.
yThe cylindrical drum 1 is disposed horizon- @The outer portion of the cylindrical drum `lis provided with a pair of spaced, parallel,
diametricallyv extending openings 7 for the reception of one end portion of a pair of flexiblel cables 8 which are adapted to be wound and unwound on the drum 1 as said drum oscillates. Set screws 9 are threaded into the cylinder 1 and engaged with the cables 8 for securing said cables tothe drum and preventing the withdrawal of said cables from the openings 7. The set screws 9 are, of course, threaded into threaded openings provided therefor in the cylinder 1. Said threaded openings being at right angles to the open- 'ingsl 7 and communicating vwith intermediate portions of the openings 7.
Lugs 10 are rigidly mounted by any suitable means, such as welding or soldering to the outer sides of the levers 4 of the drop Vstitch attachment 5, the lugs 10 projecting laterally from the levers 4 and being m'ounted on the end portions of said levers which f are remotefrom the pattern cam of the knitting machine 3 which actuates the drop `stitch attachment levers. rl`he lugs lOareprovided with diametrically extending openings zv for the reception of the other end portions of the iiexible cables 8 and set screws 11 are threaded longitudinally into the free ends of ofthelugs 10 for engagement with the cables forsecuring said cables to thelugs and pre- All machine, work having any desired number of crochet stitches therein may be produced, as exemplified in Figures 3 to 8, inclusive, of the drawings. I Vhen the drum l is oscillated by the shaft of the knitting machine upon which said drum ismounted, the cables 8 are wound thereon and unwound therefrom to actuate the levers 4 of thedrop stitch attachment 5 on the knitting machine, as will be objvious. l The reference numeral 12 designates the lusual tubular fabric in Figures 3 to 8, 1n-
clusive, of the drawings, and 13 designates the ornamental stitches which are formed through the medium of the attachment constituting this invention.
It is believed that the manyk advantages of a knitting machine attachment inaccordance with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed. y
What is, claimed is 1. In an attachment of the character described, the combination with a circular knit- Y ting machine and a drop stitch attachment operatively mounted thereon, said drop stitch attachment including` a pair of cam actuated levers, ofv an oscillating drum mounted on :the machine and operatively connected thereto for actuation thereby, and a pair of flexible cables anchored to the levers of the drop stitch attachment and connected to the drum for winding thereon and unwinding therefrom in a manner to actuate the levers. 4
2. Inan attachment of the character described, thecombination with a circular knitting machine having an oscillating shaftfand adrop stitchattachment operatively mounted on the knitting machine and includin @a pair of cam actuated levers, of a drum fixed on the oscillating shaft for movement therewith,
